Clubbers face hearing loss: survey

Forgot how many times i've left clubs & had ringing in my hears or dullness & done nothing about it

Clubbers face hearing loss: survey

Posted by Dean Millson on Jul-03-2007 04:23:

I'm positive my hearing is damaged to some point, but thankfully not too badly.

I'm hoping to talk my mother into helping my chip in for my birthday in a few weeks for a pair of custom made/fitted earplugs (they're about $400) that i can also wear in my headphones when DJing. Been meaning to get around to it for ages and probably in the last few months i've noticed a slight ringing in my ears still around a Wednesday/Thursday night, not good.

Dancing Dude

yeah I have def thought about investing in a set just for going to gigs, after armin my ears were a bit rooted when laying in bed I could hear people talking..... lol..

Armin had a WIKKID set in his ears little blue ones, they looked custom etc im sure they would be very expensive but I guess a DJ's ears are pretty damn important!

I have genetically bad hearing and am too paranoid not to wear ear plugs out. I might get some nifty ones (like the moulded type) later on but free ones I scam from work that are daggy yellow do the job just fine.

Incorrect.

I bought my pair for.....

$260?

Fuck though, they are so good, worth every cent. I have been wearing them for around 6 months now, both as a DJ and a clubber, and noticed a huge difference.

After Armin van Buuren, I was the only person out of the ten I went with that didn't have ringing in my ears for a few days after.

When DJing, there is a barely noticeable drop in bass, but otherwise, sound quality is the same.

Admittedly, they can irritate you ears a little bit, but not so much so that it becomes part of your night. After a few drinks (or pills), you literally forget that they are in until you get home.

Can't recommend them highly enough.

You don't look like too much of a dickhead wearing them either, because they barely protrude from your ears.

Posted by Dean Millson on Jul-03-2007 06:40:

Ah ok, i thought they were more like $350ish, but thought they could have been more. I made enquiries about a month ago but needed to get some funds together first. Where did you get them from? They are custom fitted to your ear canal yeah?

Posted by Domesticated on Jul-03-2007 06:50:

Custom fitted, yes.

They reduce all sound by -25dB.

You can hear people speaking at normal volume in a quiet room when you have them in.

I got them at some place in Prahran. Sorry, had a look but couldn't find the name. It was close to the corner of Chapel and Toorak Rd, in a side street, maybe Cromwell or Surrey?

You bloody need ear plugs at F4 too Dean, they always have the system cranked way too high. I reckon F4, Room and Metro are the loudest clubs I've ever been to.

i've seen lots of people use them in the past and i once tried the foam, but honestly, cbf, ive seen people use them once or twice and then just forget, i take comfort in the fact those old djs who have been doing it for ages can still hear

They can't...?

Did you have any DJs in mind?

All the times I've ever heard hearing loss mentioned to big name DJs, they say:

a) They have it badly already.

b) It's creeping up on them, and they're worried.

c) They couldn't give a shit because they wear plugs.

I've seen a few of the big names recently using plugs actually.

Posted by Dj_Es-Dva on Jul-03-2007 07:40:

oh really? i've never seen any big name dj using ear plugs...

Armin used them in melbourne's white party--

same filter system thing as the custom ones but has that rubber thing instead of one molded for ear canal. only $35. i have some and use when @ loud clubs, makes everything sound normal at reasonable level, but i find them a little annoying for dj use. would probably need to get the filters that are about -15db for dj rather than those one that are -20 or something like that.

sorry man what did you say i couldnt hear u ????

Hey just out of curiosity guys, in regards to headphone volume whilst playing out, ASSUMING your using a pio mixer, and have monitors facing you directly with say a meter or two distanced away... at what level do you have the dial cranked up to on the mixer... at home i have a 600, and i would probably have it (Headphone vol) cranked say 1/3 of the way and the level of loudness i would say, for the person on the decks, is about as loud as a club... the music can be heard from across the street as well, just to indicate how loud the environment is... now, i compare this to my friend, who when we do vr's sets at my place, probably cranks up the headphone vol to like 1/2 way no worries... sometimes i forget and when i jump on the decks i get blasted with the headphones ...

what level would you guys put the headphone volume to ?

Different headphones will have different volumes at different levels...

you should set the knob as low as possible. helps if you have a pair of headphones like sennheiser hd280s because they block out more sound than almost any other headphone. hd25s and most other popular dj headphones don't block out enough imo (circumaural > supraaural).

Nah, -15dB is not enough.

As I said, if you're wearing a -25dB pair, you can talk to someone on the phone or in a quiet room of your house perfectly normally. They don't block the sound nearly as dramatically as you'd think.

I've DJed using them several times and they were fine.

I've got fitted ear plugs with a set of 15db filters and 25db filters.

The 15 are much more enjoyable for music. I find the 15s still take the edge off of the loudness, but leave the bass frequencies much less touched compared to the 25s.

I assume for clubbing you would want 25s at the stupidly loud places, but hopefully if you're performing, you can have your monitors at a level where 15s are fine.

Fair point; I did mention that the 25's seem to block the bass ever so slightly more than other frequencies, though I'm still not sure if this is reality or just my perception...

That said, I'm a terrible beat matcher and my plugs have never made me worse.

yeah thats exactly what im getting at i would rather have the levels reduced somewhat whilst playing to help prevent damage, than have nothing to protect my ears (like current!). in some monitoring situations, simply turning down the headphones or booth isnt enough.
the -25's are fantastic to be on the dance floor with

Hey guys!

weve got that noise-in-clubs-discussion going on for a while here in Germany. Thats why DJs here now can get a "DJ-drivers licence" (meaning that the DJs get to know how to deal with music and noise responsibly). Weve got even clubs which are now labeled as "ear-friendly" - I havent been to one yet.
But Im looking forward to your clubs down under
