Unbalanced 1/4 question

The answer to this is going to be really obvious to some people but:

Do I get stereo sound through a 1/4 unbalanced input/output?

I was under the impression I did but for some reason I'm not as sure now. I have been looking into buying a firewire 410 but if I only get one channel as opposed to stereo on each input that would decrease my desire to purchase it.

There are two main 1/4" jacks.
TS (Tip Sleeve - Mono)
and
TRS (Tip Ring Sleeve - Stereo)

I've already read that wiki page, it was the first place I went to when I came up with this question but the M-Audio website doesn't seem to specify which type of jack it is. Just that its unbalanced.

Upon further inspection of the website, it does say that the inputs are TS.

So I would have to have an input on that card for each side of the output from my mixer.

I also looked around on the internet though and found a couple of places mentioning TS stereo inputs.

Are you sure TS can only be mono?

That is the way nearly all sound cards will have it specified.
2 Outputs = 2 mono channels.

Yah thats the way its looking. Seems a more expensive soundcard is in order.

just because it's TRS doesn't mean it's stereo. in the case of headphones, yes -but it's carying two unbalanced mono signals. one to the left ear, and another to right ear to create stereo sound. it's easier to use one jack, and a TRS connection, than using 2 TS connections -one for each side of your headphones.

if your dj mixer has TRS/balanced outs, plug your headphones into that, and see what happens. =-)

ok, i just looked at a pic of 410 right now.

the back pannedl has 1 stereo input, and 4 stereo outputs.

My biggest concern in using the 410 for this purpose is if I am going to be able to get the sound out of my mixer in the correct way for looping and also for effects. Obviously, the effects will be fine, my ttm 56 has a TS output from right and left to go into to two inputs on the back of the 410.

But will I be able to use that effectively for looping?

I think so, but tell me if this sounds right. I can select the channel that I want to sample my loop from by turning off the efx send from the other channel while leaving the desired efx send on. This should send everything I've done to the sound (upfader, crossfader, eq) into the sound card for only the one channel (post fader efx send on the TTM 56). Assuming I have everything automated correctly in ableton, it will grab the sound, stop after 2 bars or whatever, and start loopin immediately. All I have to do is have my mixer set all the way to Wet for the efx and it should output the loop that I created and I can kill the input.

Whew! let me know if I'm a moron or if that is totally unintelligible.

i understand what you want to do. with, this sound card it is possible. i have never played w/that mixer, and i have never tried to do what you're trying to do... so, i can't say anything that is definate... but to me it seems that it would better to use either the flex-fx feature, or the aux i/o.

you can try using the effects jack... but you will need a Y-cable adapter, and a pair of TS cables.

by using the effects jack you will have 1 mono send, 1 mono return. this will be split by the y-cable, and you only use 1 input jack on the sound card, and 1 output jack. -all unbalanced.

but like i said before, i think using the flex-fx or aux feature would be better. even tho it's still unbalanced, atleast it's all gonna be in stereo.

also... keep in mind there's another set of inputs on the front. if you use these, either for looping or recording your set... make sure you turn the gains down first, then bring them up to a good level. these are actually mic inputs, and they a pretty sensitive... so be nice to them. and since they are mic inputs, the level of sound quality will probably be different (probably for the worse) from the inputs on the back side.

Sorry, I meant the flex fx when I was talking about the loop. On the TTM it has two ts sends one for the Left and one for the Right, and I would hook these directly into the two input jacks on the back of the 410. Then I would take two outputs and hook them into the flex fx recieves. Seems simple enough, and the efx setup will be easy with my trigger finger, but setting up the looping is going to be a bit tougher.
