This is for those producers who turned pro. (Got signed, works-for-hire, etc)
Quite simple questions
1. What DAW(s) did you use before you turned pro -and-
2. What DAW(s) do you use now?
3. Y?

1.fruityloops (i used it 6-7 years untill i got an offer to do a remix for a pretty decent label)
2.ableton
3.i find im able to do a lot of things a lot easier and i enjoy the overall workflow that i have with ableton over fruityloops... i find automation goes a lot faster and more acurate to how i want. One thing i dont like though is auditioning of samples in ableton is a lot slower then it is in fruityloops however.


Oh and i find it a lot easier to collab with people using other DAW's other then my own as well!

i found when fruityloops bounced it would leave a bit of silence before the tracks... my buddy always had to clip the intro to fit however much just to be able to mess arround with what id give him.. little things like that im sure got annoying after a year lol

I don't consider myself pro, but did some of both types of work you mentioned... So here we go.

1. Scream Tracker 3.02, Impulse Tracker, Buzz
2. Renoise, Reason, Ableton, Cubase/Nuendo, (and only rarely FL studio)
3. I prefer to be a person that has experience with most software packages. It means you're easiliy adapting to different working environments. I mainly use renoise. But in some cases when I build tracks together with others I use Ableton or FL. Sometimes I use Reason + Cubase for remixes when I get an RNS file with the remix pack or something alike. At school we have Cubase & Nuendo installed on different workstations, so I use those every once in a while too. Never came acros Pro Tools yet. That would complete the list for me .

Like Storyteller, I wouldn't consider myself pro (simply becasue I don't make enough money from productions to give up the day job) but....

1, Cubase VST5, Logic, Reason, Cubase SX 1
2, Cubase sx3 / Nuendo3 / Acid Pro 6 / Pro-tools very occasionally
3, Cubase SX I've found to be very intuitive and when I go to other platforms, I always seem to want it back. Acid is good for quick sketches and if I want to do a simple re-edit, it's so much quicker than anything else. Nuendo is the best of my list as I find it gives more more processing power overhead and feels identical to Cubase in many respects. Pro-tools is for when I'm working with audio only projects that require loads of post polish (I hate the midi implementation in it). I do also use my Electribe ES1 for laying down percussion and basslines but find very difficult to get a complete finished track out of it due to it's litmitations (1 effect etc.)

I do stuff in Reason, Cubase, FL and (occasionally) Ableton. I think it's good not to tie yourself down to any individual tools. As BT put it... "they all have their own vibe". Though... everything ends up in Cubase for arrangement/mixing because I'm mad fast at it now.

why should i change my DAW after i'm signed? i still work the same way. so i don't see why i should change something that works for me..

I think he more or less wants to know how you developed. Where you started and how you came where you are now. He's not implying you change daw after getting signed... He's more or less asking which ones you've tried until you got to the one you prefer using now . I think.

ok, right. well, i started with reason but only some months and then switched over to logic 5. after emagic was bought by apple i switched to cubase sx 1 and now i'm up to cubase 4 and won't switch soon. i used ableton live, samplitude, energy xt (still prefered for sound design), .. for testing but will still stick with cubase for my productions as it fits very well to my workflow.

Using FL5 still, going to think about using 7, worth the upgrade?

Started with Reason. Still use it, but along with Cubase.
Why? Because I wanted to work with audio and hardware synths which Reason on its own can't do.

FL studio before and after. Simply because of the fast workflow. Thinking of switching one of these days but eh, we'll see

First music software I ever came into contact with was Noise tracker. Then putting music production down for about 14 years, which I hadn't but that's another story.

Restarted with FL 3.0, then went to FL 5.0 and stayed with that for about a year or so. Then upgraded to 7.0.
I do however user Cubase, Ableton and Reason.

I like Reason for the Re-Wire function. Means you can still enjoy the features in Reason with your other favourite software.

Ultimately I will stick with FL for the most but will switch over when working with other producers if the need is there.

As Storyteller states, it's best to be able to work with a range of stuff, it also teaches you more as each DAW has it's own charactaristics and limits. They are all only as good as the person using them.

Cubase for writing, Pro Tools for Mixing

1: Fl Studio, Reason
2: Fl Studio 6, Cubase SX3, Ableton Live 6, Garageband
3: Because now i dont just produce dance music, and for non edm works Cubase SX3 in my opinion is easier to use than Fl (such as the multiple midi tracks linked to one vst etc). Ableton because its so damn easy to lay a quick beat and bass down while on the move, Fl studio because i have been using it the longest and am very familiar with it and Garageband because at University im using macs and there are some wonderful sounds in it.

And the reason i stopped using Reason, because the interface annoys me, no VST support and above all else, i could never get the sounds i wanted from it. Thats not to say Reason isnt a great program because it is, im just stating personal reasons why i stopped using it.

I started off with FL and it gave me my start on piano roll composition. I grew tired of how cheesy it felt and gradually looked for other options, the first one that seemed good was Reason. It took be about 6 months to get my foot in the door, and I've been using it solid for about 4 years. I wouldn't use anything else, it gets my sound perfect and I work in it effortlessly and with great productivity.

REASON!!!!!

ps. worried about not being able to use VST? VST sucks anyway, but you can re-wire if you need to. And you can sample hardware if you want those sounds.
