OTTAWA -- The Canadian government shows no sign of flinching in the face of new Russian claims to a vast stretch of Arctic Ocean seabed that could conflict with this country's own territorial ambitions.

"Canada's sovereignty over the lands and waters of the Canadian Arctic is long-standing, well-established and based on historic title," the Department of Foreign Affairs told CanWest News Service on Friday, in response to reports that Russian scientists have amassed fresh geological evidence supporting their country's claim to about 1.2 million square kilometres of the Arctic seafloor -- and the potential oil riches that lie below.

All the Russians I've met I've like. They all like drinking as much as me... a good starting point. Plus tend not to be full of themselfs either.

No one cared about the arctic when it was all ice. Now it's melting and opening new sea routes, so everyone's looking at canada with envious eyes. This is gonna mean either big trouble or some potential profit for canada in the future. Probably the latter. Not many countries would dare start a war over territory. You don't piss off the little kid with lots of big friends.

Two can play that game. I say that next decade will be very interesting. The 2nd coming of Putin, slated for 2012 notwithstanding.
