Have you ever...............

had a great idea for a track late at night or early in the morning then when you finally wake up and try and remember it again its gone? Only to sit down later trying to write something which just isnt happening? Do any of you get up at the time and try and make notes on the PC or somewhere else or just forget it? Odd questions I know but I'm sure some of you have had this, it would be interesting to find out what you all think.

Happens all the time.

I have a crappy old acoustic guitar. I'm no guitarist, by any means, but I can plink out a tune by ear. When I get a melody in my head I play it out as best I can. The melody coupled with the finger motions helps me remember. Next morning, grab the guitar, try to remember it. It's easy to correct and figure out what I originally played the night before.

On a related note (no pun intended), I find switching to a guitar from a piano to create melodies is sometimes good. I'll end up hitting chords that I wouldn't have otherwise hit.

I think this happens to everyone! I tried recording myself singing the tunes on my mobile so I'd remember it in the morning, but it never quite sounded the same the next morning!
I gave my wife my mobile, but forgot to delete all the voice recordings, and she played them to her brother - it sounded like I was a mentalist singing some stupid tunes!! He thought it was hilarious and played it for everyone at his works who now have me as their ringtones.

Dont do that now for obvious reasons!

Keep a pad of paper on your nightstand. Problem solved.

I did that once. The notes didn't make any sense the next day.

yeh i know what u mean, usually a lot of ideas come at night but ur too tired to turn on the computer and work with them. its the worst feeling, being inspired and you cant do anything about it.

this is why I only work at night. early hours of the morning make for some awesome tunes.

Posted by echosystm on Jul-08-2007 02:22:

the solution is obvious.... you get your phone, set it to voice recorder and hum it in.

i remember reading an article w/ oakenfold who said he went to work with hunter s. thompson for Bunka and that hunter would only work from 2 am to 6 am...

anyways Justin if you don't know how to write in musical notation perhaps its time.

Some great posts there amd funny ones to. Ive tried the phone thing sometimes it works and sometimes not. I agree I find that at night I work better to.

Anthony interesting point about oakenfold in that article.

I did learn this years ago for a short while but forgotten most of it now, I guess it will help to learn again someday Can you write music from a melody in your head?

+1

Your voice is the easiest way to express your ideas. Just record it. It doesn't matter if it's a shit recording or not, it's only you who has to listen to it.

and its really funny to play back all your old recordings of you screeching some out some noise which is meant to resemble a melody. I have to laugh out loud whenever I play back my recordings

Haha, but in that case they probably wouldn't have made sense even if you'd headed to your computer right then and there. Lots of things seem to make sense when you're half-conscious that are actually nonsense.

Diginut thats true. As said early or late hours can be best I find i work better at night so I'm sticking to that for the majority of my producing. It will hurt but no pain not gain, right!

haha yeah i hum something i want to remember and record it off my phone :P!

Shower works wonders for me. I usually think out arps and leads in there. Funny how sometimes the best melodies come out when you least try to make them.

Posted by lowski on Jul-10-2007 07:37:

i like early moring after breakfast and tea , but early for me is noon so..... late night is good to , im always up till like 4 or 5 , you get may more into it when its in the early am hours. maybe cuz there no distractions

Posted by azndragon0613 on Jul-10-2007 16:23:

oh and something i read about...

it's better to master in the morning supposedly because your ears are freshiest.

Posted by rob_hammond on Jul-10-2007 20:38:

Been down that road many many times. Normally I'd jam for a few hours before writing anything half decent then ideas would come flooding in but at 4am as I'm about to drop. If I stopped then I'd never get back on track. It was like a road I couldn't get back on. These days I have pad & paper & dictaphone everywhere. Any line gets hummed, whistled , sung. Any ideas half asleep get jotted down the second I wake up. Often they happen in the car or on a train. The pad is there.. Pull over ,jot, start driving again. It's like.. keep a map & it's easy to get down that road again.
Oh also found that stopping drinking while writing helped too. I thought first it was making me more creative but realised that was bull & it was just gettin in the way.

Posted by music2dance2 on Jul-10-2007 21:13:

Indeed I agree with you there noting down ideas as and when is probably the best thing to do. I also find that after messing about or listening to other music when it gets really late the best ideas happen, I find i then just keep going. I guess your brain just need to get time to get creative sometimes like most things.
