My best friend gave me his old guitar and, next week, I'm buying a distortion pedal. Soon, I'll be doing stuff like this:

yeah, I stopped playing for 2 weeks once, and surprisingly all my calluses had disappeared, so playing HURT especially when hitting the E string. I think it's the soap i'm using or something. It DOES make my skin unbelievably soft.

So, I can read tabs and I can almost get the sound I want from my new guitar. I've just got one tiny little problem...

... how do I know which finger I should use in the frets? Here's my failed attempt of playing an A minor after a C major:

I want the 2nd chord to be as long as the first one. Here's how I'm using my fingers:

C major - I'm pressing my index finger against the first fret of the fifth string

A minor - I'm pressing my index finger against the first fret of the fifth string, and my middle finger against the second fret of the fourth string

What am I doing wrong?

What I'm asking is how I should press the frets (I'm not familiar with the terminology, would that be the fingering?). For some reason, the second chord sounds super short, even though I want it to be long.
