A bunch of rich kids?

How the h*ll can you guys afford DJing? Where do you get the money from???

I'm personally broke because I got my Gemini XL-500 II decks, Numark Bluedog mixer (a piece of crap), Technics headphones and 8 records.

Now that I can finally pull off something what I'd call a decent mix, I can't afford to buy any new records!!!

People are making comments such as "dude, you outta save up for Techies and a decent mixer", but all I'm asking is how?!

Don't have a job, and WON'T have a job until next summer. Should I just wait more than a year before I can buy records again??? Should I start dealing drugs or sumptin??? I can't even go see S&D's gig because of this...

Somebody should write a book about how hard it is to be a beginning (vinyl-)dj!

Posted by I Cant Focus on Apr-16-2002 00:31:

well, it certainly does help if you do have money to buy equipment and vinyl with. you don't have to be rich, you just need a decent job. rich parents doesn't hurt either!

Posted by Dj Flesch on Apr-16-2002 01:14:

I would have told you to buy cd decks because that way you can burn cds without having to buy all the music up front. Once you dl an mp3, you can mix with it for a while, then save up to buy the ones you want to mix with professionally...or if you never go professional, then it really doesn't matter in my opinion. That way you can get good eq AND good music that you know you will use.

I was lucky. I got more than enough money from a government loan for school. SO i used some of it for dj stuff... But if you can get a steady part time job, that you can set aside $50 or so a week for a couple of records, then it really isn't all that bad. Just cut back on some other luxuries.

But true, getting the intial 1-2 grand for equipment is hard... I just got lucky.

Posted by Special_K on Apr-16-2002 02:59:

man im only 18, i work part time at minimum wage in Vancouver ($8.50) an hour. I have a pretty kickass set (tech mk3's and pioneer 500) on top of this i have enough money to do pretty much anything i want on my days off. Its expensive but not THAT expensive

Posted by Mark on Apr-16-2002 03:19:

if you are doing school, you can work part time after school or over the weekend and like quddha said, set aside a good amount of cash after every paycheck, lay off the unnecessary spending and you would be surprised how quickly you can get your shit. no work = no money = no fun. i believe most of us do have to work for our stuff. we're not all a bunch of silverspoon sucking kids ya know.

Posted by Tony Morello on Apr-16-2002 03:55:

i can usually afford to get about 6 new records every week-2weeks
it's just about adjusting your spending habits and stuff

having a job helps too

Posted by hapamoto on Apr-16-2002 04:25:

rich kids?? hahah.. im a hardworking college student! working sucks but when you gotta pay ur own way (i mean not living w/ your parents and not getting $$ for them) then u gotta do wat u gotta do. i pay for everything.. everything i own was bought w/ my own cash including my tables and records.. if you want it bad enough you'll find a way to save up for it!

Posted by DJ LIQUID on Apr-16-2002 06:46:

SAVE!!!!!!!!!!!

if ur parents give u an allowance........SAVE IT!!!!!

pretty soon u'll have ur gear

if u really want to be a dj u'll make the sacrifice

i bought my first gear when I was about 14-15....worked detassiling...it wasnt easy..but i saved enough to get a mixer and some tables

Posted by DJ Darchinova on Apr-16-2002 08:09:

I really hate the REAL rich kids... they fucken get as much money for the best equipment and think they are the best.. most of the time they can't even mix and don't have a clue what they are doing....

they just piss me off

Dealing drugs would certainly help yeah

Anyway, every starting dj goes thru a difficult time, and even the already "big" dj's have it difficult aswell, cause you always want more and more.Just keep the faith, believe in yourself and don't give up 2 easy.

Well
My parents paid for my equip
And I'm returning it by working at a Piza Hut

OH PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

It's simple really, just do like i did..........

And rob a liquor store

Posted by Special_K on Apr-16-2002 21:24:

Man i dont spen NEAR 50 bux a week on records. I mean if you dont spin at clubs or raves there isnt much point in having 1000 records. I have friends that spin on a regular basis at the night clubs here in vancouver that dont even spend that much on records. Its all about self control

Thanks for your comments!

Yeah, I see how all of you N/Americans work for the money, have part time jobs etc, but for me it's a bit different for two reasons:

1) My visa is an exchange-student visa. It won't allow me to work (except if I start sellin e and robbin liquor stores...=D).

2) When I'll go back to Finland it will be too late to get a summer job. They're all gone already. There's no chance to work after school starts (mid-August). 40 hours/week in classes plus an hour or two of studying after that monday through friday. Just "a bit" different than high school here...=(

But don't take it too seriously - I don't. This thread was meant to be a bit of a humorous one, but it seems like it has failed miserably! =)

Hmm...deejay_naku, if I were you, I'll research around on the drug scene in Finland...provided you are really that desperate...

I've know a dude in Edmonton, 6 years back who became a millionare at the age of 18, just by selling dope..bought his own Condo in Vancouver...seems like money makes the world goes round...but to me..that's not the way to go...

Don't even bother comparing your financial status with these dudes here who buy vinyls or equipment on a regular basis...hell, with those 8 vinyls you have...if you can spin a perfect set with them...it'll be the accomplishment no one can ever take from you..

There are tons of peeps out there who owns a lots of vinyls but how many of them do they actually spin? Now that's the question...I understand that with 8 vinyls, you can be bored outta your wits, after all, more is better than less..."Greed" lol

If you are willing to put off some money into an investment accout, do your research on stocks/shares..., there are tons of opportunities for you to double, triple, quadruple your cash in a matter of weeks...

Like I said, there are tons of opportunities out there that do not require you to have a job and yet still have the cash coming in...

Now, listen to me...whatever route you take is your choice...think about it and think it hard...there's nothing in this world that is impossible...it's up to you to open up that road and see it for yourself...

Good luck

BTW, I am not smoking anything.. lol...just stressed over exams for now..argghhh...

excellent excellent point! i think there is such a thing as buying too much vinyl.. there was a point when i was buying shitloads and i realized that i was basically getting enough records to put on new shit each time i spun a party.. then i realized that i was neglecting my older stuff.. but yah, one needs self control, i guess unless you can afford to go buy every record you want, when ever you want.. that must be nice.

..and fire999 also makes a good point!

Posted by Special_K on Apr-17-2002 06:23:

i buy a record every couple weeks. Every now and then ill make a big order from www.dotvinyl.com (7 reocrds max)

Even if i set aside 50 bux a week for records i dont think i would even be able to find that many productions that i would actually want

Scorchio, u work at Pizza Hut? I work in Cambridge 1, =)

I saved like fuck to get my decks. Sacrificed everything, basically- good meals, clothes, life. My obsession guided me along the way. It's like a drug; I just couldn't imagine everyone else owning equipment and having so much fucking fun while I rot my life away wondering what "should have been". In life you have to make decisions.. I made mine.

The one thing which i have done a lot of is picking up records from 2nd hand vinyl stores and also buying from djs who are selling records. You'd be surprised at how many DJs get rid of tracks they don't play anymore, but used to, often they're incredible tracks which you can't buy anymore, but because the DJ has changed styles, he doesn't want to keep it.

I've picked up probably half of my vinyl at a fifth of the price to a quarter from buying at private sales. Just look out for them. Find out if there are any DJ mailing lists for your area.

If you want to get the rare vinyl then get friendly with the local record stores and after a while they'll let you have a look at the limited and white stuff which they don't put on the shelves.

I'm saving up right now to get some decks. It's hard as fuck though, I'm used to going shopping every weekend and buying liquor and weed every weekend and having fun, but I'm finding that if I save the 30 bucks/ weekend that I would spend on Hennessey and weeed, I'll have my tables soon. I'm not worried about money for vinyls, I can handle that, it's just that initial 2 G's or so thats such a fucking setback.

I'm taking a year off from school though and getting a full time job, to save money for Music School, so I'll have my shit soon!

Good luck saving money. I can't suggest selling drugs, but I know it don't hurt as long as you don't get caught!

All that sacrifice will be worthwhile one day! When you have your decks staring at you in your room you'll feel like crying.. and the day you mix your first perfect set beats having an orgasm by a mile. Good luck saving up!

Posted by SpykeChyld on Apr-19-2002 19:12:

^^^LMAO, I seriously doubt it will be comparable to orgasm, but who knows, lol.

I know the first day my TT's are in my room I'm gonna cry, lmao. You have no idea how long I've been wanting these...WAAAAAAAY Before I found Trance!

LMAO, youhave no idea how small my room is. I have a desk, and a bed and the are touching. My TV and shit is set into my wall. and I still don't even have enough room for my wieght bench! I'm gonna have to put my decks in the middle of the damn living room, lol.

But yeah, this saving shit sucks, lol. I need a full time job, cus last night I decided I wasn't gonna spend any money, know what I did? went to alocal club and drank all night, lol. :shrugs: Damn it. lol.
