Speaker advice

Apologies in advance for a potential repost:

A few weeks ago hooked up my new setup, CDJ's and DJM600 to my fairly small yet sufficient for an apartment speaker setup which consists of my Yamaha receiver and 5 small JBL speakers + subwoofer. I've had this speaker set for a few years and it's worked nicely for what I have used it for up until the time I hooked my Yamaha receiver to my DJM 600. Now, it seems as if I've blown a few of the small speakers. I'll troubleshoot to make sure, but as of now I'm convinced that they're blown.

I wish I knew more about speakers and amps, but with my limited knowledge I come here seeking advice. I'm looking for recommendations on what I should purchase for a nice speaker setup, and possibly an amp (if needed) to power them. I should be able to use my JBL subwoofer which is definitely sufficient for my bedroom DJ setup, but it looks as if I'll need new speakers. I wouldn't mind having the ability to use the speakers at other events- say, if I decided to start djing at places other than my room. I have a large amount invested in my music so I'm not afraid to spend a little cash, however, I don't really want to spend a few thousand dollars for 2 speakers, either.

Can anyone recommend a speaker setup and amplifier (if needed) that might suit my needs. I've read about the JBL EON G2's for portable djing. If I went with something like this, could I use those and just power that JBL subwoofer with my Yamaha receiver and still continue to run the DJM 600 off that same receiver? Or, would you recommend some floor speakers and a separate amp.

I'm open to all suggestions and appreciate everyone's time (and better knowledge of speaker systems, etc.)

Thanks

i say go with some powered speakers...honestly, i just prefer not dealing with trying to find the right amp and shit...im more of a plug and play kind of guy

if cash isnt an option, check out the jbl prx series. i really like those speakers. good umph without the matching sub, and even if you get the sub...its not overbearing but just enough to give it an extra kick.

with a budget like yours, i would recommend that you get seperates. That is, an stand-alone amplifier with speakers. I haven't had too much experience with professional amplifiers but in my numerous encounters at clubs and with pro mobile dj's, crown seems to be the most used amplifier brand. EAW makes excellent speakers and you should def check it out...ultimately it depends on how much you wanna spend compared to how often you will use it...if you only think the bedroom will be your play out venue then you should just snag some krk's or any other studio monitor.

Good Luck!

well with my experince in speakers i recommand many types with high performance such as JBL but it will not fit ur budget for sure if u want a real good monitors for ur DJ setup u can get one of those 2 speakers

1- M-audio Bxa8 (40 watts RMS) or Bxa5 (20 watts RMS) this had recommanded as one of the best monitors by well known producers/djs but for me i had listen to it's sound and you will not find that much big different on the sound quality and for me it's expensive for 2 way monitors with 40 or 20 watts soo if u like to have low volume while mixing and great quality get this ...

2- Behringer TRUTH 2030(110 watts RMS)/2031(225 watts RMS) 2-way active refrence monitors , well this one what i have and really I think it make you live inside the mix and make ur heart beats from it's sound and it have a high quality sound and less expinsive than the M-audio and really for me the 2030 which i have make the room shaking i didn't try the other one but if i have it ,i think it will destory the whole room (I recommand this monitors for producing and djaying )

Those are really good recommendations...

To the poster: is there any way you can narrow down your search by providing us information on whether you want monitors or big PA type speakers.

Hey thanks to all for the replies. Much appreciated!

To the above question:
I hadn't really thought about it up until now. I'm not afraid to spend some money on speakers/amps, etc. because music, especially trance & house) is a big passion of mine and stereo equipment purchased now I can use the rest of my life so I guess what I'd like to do is start building up a system that would be great for small events, house parties, my bedroom, etc. and add from there as I get more money so maybe in a couple years I have enough stuff to dj at larger events if I choose to do so. I figure down the road I could always use the speakers in different rooms of a house or what not- i'm trying to look at it as more of an investment than a large purchase.. trying to justify it

With an amp, how many speakers can I power? How big of an amp am I looking for? What's the benefit of an amplifier/speaker setup over the powered speakers listed above? Those JBL's looked pricey but I bet they sound pretty nice. Can I power both speakers and sub off of the same amp or will I need separate amps for both?

Thanks again!

^^^^^^ man to save ur money look for speakers with Bi-amplified so u don't need to worry about it's amplifier anymore anyway if u want to get seperate speakers and seperate amplifiers i think the equation should be equal from both sides if u got for example a (1000 RMS watts) speakers u should have a (1000 RMS watts ampifier) to tolerant the speaker

I've read some reviews on those Behringer 2031A's and for the most part they've received excellent reviews and most say they are an extremely good value. It looks like I can get a new pair of these for about $250. I don't see how I could go wrong for that amount of money. From the reviews it seems like the only problem I can run into is that they might pick up some AM/FM radio stations if you live in a town. Also, a couple people said they blew them out after about a year.
Aside from that, 95% of the reviews that I've read said they're very good speakers for the money. I figure I might as well try them out. I'm sure that for now, they'll be more than enough for my room. I can always research and look into buying bigger and better down the road when I get serious about needing speakers for bigger areas.
If for some reason they pick up radio stations in this area- I can always sell them and at the price I paid, I doubt I'd lose much $.

Recommendations for other setups still appreciated as I'll refer back to this thread down the road as I look to purchase more equipment.

Thanks!

krk rokit 8

they're cheap, they're aesthetically pleasing, and they sound pretty damn tight...

also the mackie srm450s are really nice if you have the cash...

But the amplifier has to be able provide more watts than the speakers can handle if you want it to sound allright . Putting an amp to it's max often provides strange peaks which can ruin your speakers. So it's always recommended to have a stronger amp than your speakers can handle. This ensures optimal sound-quality under all circumstances, as long as you don't turn it up too much or else...

I have the Behringer Truths b2031. They go insanely loud for their price range. And they're not that bad either. Allthough I'm going to look for some better speakers sooner or later. (3000+Euro instead of 500 which the Truths cost me some years ago).

wow...who have you guys been talking about for speakers and amps combos....a rating of 1000watts max on a speaker should not be exceeded...in fact, a good rule of thumb is to get an amplifier that provides half the rms rating for power. So 250RMS watt amp for 500watt rms speaker...

amps just need to have the ohm rating matched with the speaker ohm rating...but not power...you can drive speakers with one watt and not blow the amp as long as you have ohm levels in check...

Posted by spdandpwr on Jul-13-2007 09:19:

there is a lot more technicality to what i posted above....however, the fact of the matter is, speakers are not meant to be overdriven...

Thanks!

Man they had blew it down because they are stupid this monitors have a limit light when it turn red then it mean the high volume affecting one of the high mid or low channel so plz turn the volume down but people always try to get more than what the speakers can give even if it's million watts by the way even for those who said they had blew it when the red light turn on after 30 seconds or more the amplifier turn of on the speaker not to harm it soo i think they are always getting out of the speakers limit

speaker advantages:

1- it have a limitation light turn on when ur getting out of the limit.

2- it have a volume trim from -6db to 6 db when u set it to 0 db for example as i set it u will not harm the speakers and when u set the master volume to 0 db the speakers will indicate that this is the maximum if u turn the master volume more up the red light will begin to work

ADVICE : always read the manual of the speakers IF U WANT THEM TO LIVE LONGER LIFE

ANOTHER ADVICE : Make sure that ur speakers is the last thing to be turned on and the first thing to be turned off this will make it live for long time and 2031 have automatic off switch

Posted by DJ-KCeZ on Jul-13-2007 09:52:

well about the amplifier it have many ways to be set but 1 to 1 is best way (1 watt from speaker to 1 watt from the amplifier) regarding to other ways if u set the amplifier to more than the speakers can tolerant u can blew it and if u set the amplifier to be half of the watts i have doubt if the speakers will work at all

In the end it doesn't really matter. It's mostly a matter of personal preference. I prefer to have a stronger amp than speakers. Why, see the text below.

If you prefer crystal clear and maximum performance it's a must to have at least a stronger amp (in Watts) than your speakers can handle. Why? Because an amp distorts the audio signal when it's put up to it's max. If your amp can provide more watts than your speakers can handle it's easy to blow your speakers. So watch the volume. However the audio signal will be of awesome quality at whichever volume you prefer to listen (below the speaker max of course).

If your amp has less power than your speakers can handle something else happens. If you put the amp up to it's max volume the audio signal will distort, the music will be less genuine compared to the original input signal. Normally this at least would not blow up your speakers. BUT amps can behave strangely when pushed to/beyond their limits. In this case an amp could produce huge peaks (especially if it's a cheap design) which could eventually blow your amp & speakers as well..

Actually its just the opposite. The RMS rating of your amp should be 1.5 - 2 times the rms rating of your speaker. You can get away with less, and i do in my own personal setup. I don't need to play my speakers to the max so I am comfortable using smaller amps. If i was playing out and building a PA, i would go with larger amps. It is alot easier to burn up a voice coil with less power that is distoted and compressed, than it is with good clean power.

Ideally your amp should be stronger than what your speakers are rated at.

Again, I appreciate all of the responses!

Embarrassingly enough, I did a little trouble shooting with my speakers, and I don't think that they were ever blown, but I had a setting wrong on my receiver- I must have accidentally hit a button or something. After mixing with them today I think they sounded a lot better than they did when I originally thought that I may have busted them.
Regardless, I ordered those Behringer speakers and look forward to hearing them. I'm going to wait awhile to purchase anything more at the moment, but will eventually want to upgrade to a larger more powerful system.

Thanks again

Edit: ** The speakers aren't the problem- it's my echo indigo dj soundcard that is the problem. The reason the speakers sound fine when I'm mixing is that the sound isn't routed through that soundcard. I hope I can get a refund on that soundcard... that thing wasn't cheap.

I have a pair of Tascam VL-X5's and i love them. They do need to be coupled with a sub but 2x 5in studio monitors + studio sub really sounds sweet in a bedroom set up.

Another amateur question for you guys:

I just received the Behringer Truth 2031A's in the mail today and was hoping to hook them but don't have the required TRS or XLR cables.
1st question is should I go with the TRS or XLR style cable, and where would you recommend purchasing these from? I know I should go with 'balanced' cables, correct? I went to a local Best Buy store and apparently they aren't available there.

Secondly, can I hook these speakers up through my Yamaha receiver, which is powering a couple smaller speakers and a subwoofer? Otherwise, how do I hook these up? I've got the "Master Out" outputs on my DJM600 connected to my Yamaha Receiver.

Thanks again

well u need the right cable to hook it up in the mixer soo if the mixer offer to u RCA connection only (most mixers offer for the master/main) and not offer the XLR connection then u need to get "TRS 1/4 << on the speaker to RCA>> on the mixer" cable, otherwise if ur mixer offer XLR then u can get (XLR to XLR) cable.

**chaep mixers don't offer the XLR connection like behringer, most numark mixers,etc....

*** i don't know what is ur yamaha reciever do but if what im think u can get a mutli connection u can connect it to ur mixer which can let u set ur behringer speakers on way and ur yamaha speakers on the other way to make 2 way refrence it's a way, another way i dunno if this reciver can hook the behringer speakers, i mean if it have a connections for that u can see it's back panal if it can provide u more connection...

u have DJM-600 then u have both ways TCR or XLR u can choose as u like...

yeah, i also grew up w/the philosphy that the amp rating should be double of what the speaker is rated for the best possible sound quality, and to prevent the premature death of drivers because of distortion caused by amps.

like allen said, you don't have to strictly adhere to this rule in a home set up. atleast here in my apt, where the walls are paper thin... my nieghbors definately wouldn't appreciate me matching a 1000watt amp w/some 500watt speakers.

my denon avr-1000 is perfect... actually, i need to get different speakers, because it's actually too much.

http://www1.shopping.com/xPF-Yamaha-HTR-5560

This is the receiver I have. My DJM600 is hooked up to the CD input on the Yamaha receiver via RCA cables from the "Master Out 1" output on the DJM600. I see a "booth monitor" output on the back of the DJM600. Does one cable branch off from there and go to both monitors?

I'm an idiot, sorry.

I'm really hoping that I can continue to power a few speakers (including subwoofer) with the Yamaha receiver while also finding a way to get the Behringers hooked up.

Ha. I'm also living in an apartment with thin walls. The neighbor below me would frequently send up her kids to tell me to turn the bass down. I tried to only play the music loud when they were gone. Fortunately they recently moved out so I am looking forward to putting these new monitors to good use

i try to be extra considerate to one of my neighbors, since they just had a baby a few months back. when i used to work nights, i would have all day to bump... because everyone was gone. but now i moved to day shift, and there's a newborn next door... the old glory days are gone. =-(

the wall situation sucks... everyone hears everything... yet, when i used bump in the day, if my window was closed, you don't hear anything if you're standing at my front door down stairs... -my townhouse has two floors. but we can hear each other talking sometimes, or using the garbage disposal. a lot of the times i can make out the music my neigbors are listening to, in my room... but when i go to their place, it's obvious that's it's not "loud". and it's the same when they come over... but i don't blame them when they get tired of me jamming w/my set up for 4-5hours straight, and they hear everything almost as well as i do.

i was born in los angeles. my father is from cordoba argentina, and my mother is italian. so technically, i'm 1/2 1/2... but culturally, i'm 94.4% italian, and linguistally, i'm 86.7% italian. =-)

same here, i have had ex girlfriends from buenos aires. actually, i prefer to just roll w/girls who were born in argentina or italy. not girls who were born here. i want the full effect, the watered down, white washed version. if you know what i mean.
