an article in the Toronto Star today said that a *conservative* estimate is that he'll get 15 years.

not that I'd ever 'look forward' to 15 yrs in prison, but at age 62, and after enjoying a rather lavish lifestyle, Black must be in a bad, bad frame of mind right now.

I think a conservative estimate is more like 0. Sounds like there are some real issues to be dealt with on appeal. This ain't over.

The Star uses the word "conservative" so much, it's lost all meaning in any context. Conservative estimate according to whom?

It's very unlikely that it'll survive an appeal, where the higher judges tend to see these cases for what they really are. I'm no fan of the pretentious Black, but the impropriety and generally obnoxious class warfare in the proceedings was very obvious.

But, time will tell. If I'm wrong, I'm sure the next few months will show that clearly.

There seems to be two schools of thought. One suggests that because he was found not guilty of the racketeering charges, he could get off altogether on appeal. The other is that because he was found guilty of the obstruction of justice (max. 20 years), he's facing substantial jail time, if the conviction holds up.

should be interesting...

perhaps the source is a wee bit biased, lol...

but if the convictions hold up, and the max is 35, I think 15 is far from unrealistic.

would he *really* only get 5 years if the convictions hold up on appeal? Maybe in a Canadian court but look at sentences for other high-profile white collar crimes in U.S. Federal courts over the last 5 years...the sentences are rather severe, to say the least.

And I would think they would be served concurrently, rather than consecutively.

But yeah, who's to say until it actually happens?
