-- Bedroom DJs?
How many people here would consider themselves to be a "bedroom DJ"?
Ya know... ya screw around with mixing stuff but never really play live or anything... just as a hobby maybe...
I sure am... I figure when I'm done school and have time/money I would actually perform...
Of course, the other question is how does one go from being a bedroom DJ to playing a few sets? Thats the ticket.
Later
i guess i kinda have a lil advantage.. coz i actally run the event i play at.. hehe.. so even if ima shite.. im still gonna play =p.. but i wana think that i'm alrite.. =p
me, me , me!! hehe imma bedroom dj hehe i started about 3 weeks ago and god i love it..i look forward to it every single day. dj'in is the best thing i got myself into. it always makes my day, going into my room and mixing some quality trance
yesssssssssss
me too
i have been bedroom djing properly for a year now befor that with crappy gear.
I had my first gig in january
I tell its a shock, cause you can rock the place in your room right. out there is a whole new ballgame. Delay monitoring, sound, the nerves and the gear is different. I had trouble getting used to the mixer and the tt's where much looser.( with beatmatching the records) It was fucking fun though cant wait for my next one. Its better than extasy. When it works I had 40 minutes only and I had one big mess up. The rest were all standard mixes. It was at my school ball. I was standing up there with my tux on behind the wheels of steel and all the birds at my school (which are fine (but cocky ___Damn!!!!!!)looking at me druling LOL. No it was the best night I ever had. If u know what I mean. I could finally show to people what I had been doing for the past 9 months. It was tough though swithing to a larger sound system
lol the first time i played to a crowd.. i was so bad..
i couldn't beat match.. i had about 40 vinyls.. and had had decks for about 1 month lol..
but we were ambitious lol..
... lol just remember..
if all else fails.. mix with the break..
hehe..
Well i'm a bedroom dj when it comes to vinyl but i've actually started my own dj company with a few buds BUT we dj with cds. yeah yeah i know cd djing is less glamourous but its a start and give me a couple more months and i'll be rocking the gigs with the wheels of steel.
As to how to make the transition from bedroom dj to club/rave dj. Well i found out that you should find a really good vinyl shop and meet everybody you can. You'll be amazed at how many people have connections.
I also consider my self as a bedroom DJ but thats cause i dont really have all the equipment i need to play live yet.
I have a long way to go

I am a bedroom DJ as well.. performing on shoutcast and mixing CD's.. heh.. I have performed on Radio as well.. and that is pretty much like streaming on shoutcast hehe.., My first time live in front of a crowd was harsh.. got the jitters through out the set.., man i hope i over come this and build some confidense.. heheh, at least my mixes went well..
I have done a little live but not enough to get myself out of the Bedroom DJ status... Now I just write my own music..leave the spiining to those guys who are good...
im getting better at beatmatching im not perfect. the thing im having trouble with is phasing. i cant match the measures so they both sound in sync i can match the bass drums preety good but the measures im always a measure off and it pisses me off but eventually ill have it all down and when i do thats when i record my mixes in .mp3 format and then make promo cd's and send em out to a few peeps and hopefully ill get some gigs
I think I've got the beatmatching thing down pretty good -- it'll got out of phase a little now and then, but I think it still sounds decent.
I mean, even the biggest name DJs don't get it perfect every time
I'm working on making the set more "exciting"... I mean, anybody can mix 2 songs together over a 20-30 second mix... I think is better to make the mix more exciting, if appropriate. I always feel bad if you can tell when the next song in the mix starts. Sometimes its ok, but I find it boring... i donno... something to work on i guess
l8ter
I'm a bedroom mixer now but not by choice, I just moved to England from the United States where I was playing to crowds every weekend, but the scene is so advanced here it's kind of who you know not how good you are so I'm back in the bedroom.
I gave my demo CD to a promoter and after I called him back a few days later he said he hadn't stop listening to the CD since I gave it to him, but since no one knows who I am he couldn't book me to play his party, and let me tell you once you've spun at a club, not being able to play for a crowd is 10x worse than any drug addiction.
I've been DJing almost a year and it's brilliant, I love it. My first gig was last July for my sister's birthday and I could just about beatmatch (or I thought I could hehe)! I must have sucked ass big time.
Anyway, I reckon I'm pretty good now and I'm hopefully going to be spinning at my uni (Guildford, Surrey, UK) soon.
Hey Infinity, what's your event? Is it in London?
the next one in london is for uni. of london.. not until october 9th though @ The Scala..
and possibly July 19 @ Turnmills..
most of the summer sets i'm playing are in hongkong.. and i ain't here hehe =p..
Hong Kong rocks infinity
I'm from HK but I'm now in Canada...
Going back in summer though...
You spinning there?
lol yep.. i kinda live there sometimes..
and this summer depends on whether or not i get an internship in the UK/US or not hehe or else i might not go back..
but umm last party i played there was.. end of August..
at Stix (under park lane hotel)..
coz i didn't go back xmas..
but this comin summer.. if i do go back.. then probably it'd be stix every couple weeks.. and these parties just a bit past QUarry Bay.. hehe..
=p
If you do tell me.
I'll be there along with a buncha other friends.
Hehe.
Btw, I so need to get Corsten's Solisitice on 12".
Ppl would go crazy... Least I did when I heard it hehe.
2nd Btw, what's your DJ name. infinity?
hehe System F - Solstice.. no more copies dude..
it came out on Tsunami TP a couple months ago.. and i think they're all gone =p..
umm i was usin ma real name.. but maybe i shud change it to Infinity lol...
it was just 'kevin' last time lol.. i dunno but for like 2 years.. i can't decide on usin what? lol.. oh wel.. =p

coming out of the bedroom
I also consider myself a bedroom dj, not for long tho/ =) Hopefully, I realize I have a while still to go, but I can see myself actually playing for half decent crowds. I have a set of mine recorded into mp3 if anyone wants it, I'll be glad to send it to ya, via icq or server, etc..
I spin melodic/prog trance (apparently have the world does) but I love it soo too bad.
1) Music
2) School
3) Parties. =)

WORD..
Yeah, i'm a bedroom DJ as well. I split the DJ in a box package with a friend of mine, FTNB, and we've been trying to figure it out. The mixer that came with the setup is poop, but from what i hear its good to learn on a piece of shit so when you do upgrade you appreciate what you have. Another problem we have is that we live in Panama City and its hard as balls to get vinyls. When vinyls do come into the country the homo local dj's buy them all. We've got about 8 vinyls, no money, and a love for trance baby..yeah.

I have also made loads of mixes and put them on mp3. I always want to make it a cd and sell it to people but its never perfect. Im very critical of myself aswell. On monday I made a record with recording. I recorded a set of 2hours33minutes. Yes 30 records. This the playlist. I managed not top play any (real)trance. You can see what I spin apart from trance>>>>>>>>>>

Bedroom DJ Extraordinaire
Yeah... I could fall into the category of bedroom DJ. I've had the stuff since October, but now that college is getting fun (Yeah right... finals are such a blast!!
) I haven't had much time, and I fear I've lost the skills. Oh well, theres always the summer!! I hear that about the local DJs buying all of the records. Leaves nothing for the rest of us. That's why the internet is soooo cool.
Yup, I consider myself a bedroom dj too, still practicing hard and maybe one day........ hehe
