Quick question

So, I don't know much about turntables and all that but my friend is going to give me his old equipment that he never uses. Keep in mind that I'm a beginner, but I'm just wondering if this turntable is fine for a person like me, cause i know that the mixer isn't good.

2 Stanton STR8-50 turntables
1 pdj-11 mixer

Any comments would be great, thanks!

honestly, whats better than beer? free beer! the same logic can be applied to your situation. if hes giving it to you, what does it matter if its shit or not. its SOMETHING. is it the best? NO!!!, but its better than what most people have as a DJ setup (an ipod).

the stantons are direct-drive, so you can use them for DJing. if they were belt-drive forget about it. the mixer looks like a turd, but it will give you something to play with until you get can get a mixer with some channel EQs.

if you wanna start DJing, take his shit and practice your ass off so you can show him up with his own gear.

dont wanna hijack ur thread... but what's the difference between direct-drive and a belt-drive??

PS: i've always spinned cds!

It's actually just as the names imply:

In a direct drive TT your platter (the plate you put the vinyl on) is driven directly by it's motor.

In a beltdrive TT your platter is driven by the motor, but not directly.
A belt connects the motor and the platter together . Belt drives have the bad habit of the belt getting stretched or something similar which causes the RPM (playing speed) to become very unstable over time, amongst other things.

thanks for the info.. but why would they still make beltdrives? and wouldn't it be cheaper for them to just eliminate the belt and reduce manufacturing costs?

There's one great reason to make belt-drive TT's: You buy them because you don't know any better, you'll f* them up, and have to spend more money on direct drives. Guarantees repeat buiness.

because high quality belt drives have less wobble than direct drive. high quality belt drives go from $500 to $50,000. if you are a hard core audiophile than belt drives are the way to go.

Holy sh*t dude. You have to send me a link to one of thee $50K TT's. I'd like to see that!

Yeah belt-drives are the only tables audiophiles really buy.

Direct-drives are the only tables that DJ's should buy. DJ companies like Stanton and Numark really should NOT sell belt-drive tables, at all. But un-knowledgeable noobs buy them anyway...

Everyone else has their pick.

it's still better than nothing... you'll really appreciate it when you have money for some direct drives. by then you'll probably be one of the top 3 beatmatchers in the galaxy. -dj'ing w/beltdrives will make you hella sharp. hehehe...
