What the hell is wrong with Chicane - Don't Give Up??

Throughout my time on TA and other forums I have come across so much denigration of Chicane's Don't Give Up and I'm sick of it. This track has always been a personal favourite of mine. It's vocals transmit a happy, uplifting message and this track helped me through some tough times and I'm sure I'm not the only one touched by it.

This outburst was prompted upon reading a review of Somersault by some knobhead who states 'Chicane is mostly recognised for his Ibiza dance anthem Offshore and exposing us to that dreadful Bryan Adams collaboration Dont Give Up. LINK

I'm really surprised at the shallowness of some people.

Needs a sean tyas remix

I totally feel you on this one dude... It seems that if a song goes commercial it instantly generates animosity here on TA. Pretty stupid.

And it's funny that people knock Don't Give Up when they listen to that mindless unoriginal ASOT crap

Because not everyone is just like you?

Just because a song has personal resonance with you does not mean everyone who dislikes it must be wrong. If anything, the fact that the track has "helped you through some tough times" probably makes your view of it even more favourable, where as if you approached it with no emotional connection, you might see more negatives in it.

I think its a good track, Agnelli & Nelson remix is cute as well.

I'm not saying that everyone should like it, and I don't have a problem with people not liking it, everyone has different taste obviously, but what I do have a problem with is people violently attacking the song. I could go and dig up old threads and quotes to display all the savage adjectives used to describe the track, but cbf right now.

I think this track is fucking brilliant. I love the Original, I love the Radio Edit, I love the Disco Citizens Vs. Tomski Mix; and, as rare as it is for me to like a remake - I even like the Alex Gold & The Sound Express 2004 Mix.

Whoever this 'knobhead' is can fuck the fuck off.

It's probably the vocals, which I can imagine being a very love/hate part of the track. Personally, I don't really like them but I still think the track is alright, but I can see why they'd really irritate some people.

hate it too, mostly for every reason you probably like it.

Awful track, one of the few that I hate by Nick. Just look at these ultra-cheesy lyrics:

Don't give up, you know it's true
Gotta do what you wanna do
Don't give it up, you don't have to
Gotta do what you wanna do
Oh yeah

Compared to Offshore, Lost You Somewhere and Saltwater this track is really disgusting

i still like it, the tomski & disco citizens mix is the best tho imo.

for the 2004 mixes, i reckon agnelli & nelsons rework was better, a bit to long but i sorted that out

I love how deep it is, not really the usual Agnelli & Nelson sound.

it happens.. it's one of those things you can't prevent but just have to put up with & accept that one man's shit is another man's gold. just put yourself in his shoes & imagine the track in question was something you really can't stand.. would you hold back on slating it just to prevent offending some random guy on the internet?

i like it too either way.. not as much as most of chicane's other stuff but it's probably up there with my favourite all-time uk chart #1s

I'l second that - Imo Its a terrible track. I have nothing positive to say about it!

I like this one, to hell with the haters

Posted by [mart] on Jul-21-2007 11:43:

Male vocals have always been something of a moot point in trance, but that's exaggerated here because of the Bryan Adams factor. A lot of people just aren't open-minded enough to like it. I personally like it a lot, but the Disco Citizens vs. Tomski Remix is in a completely different league (and it's the same for Saltwater, too).

Thumbs up

Great track. Both the original and the disco citizens vs tomski remix.

I never understood the dislike for this track either, I think it's pretty good.
