Tiesto @ Bar Rio TA Roll Call

A formal roll call is needed for this show.

I have just recently permanently moved down here in H-town from Newfoundland, canada and getting a feel to the scene. I have been to a few shows here that include Carl Cox @ Meridian (killer show), Paul van dyke @ The Warehouse (Huge show), Markus schultz @ Bar Rio, Nick Fanchulli & James Zabelia. The electronic music following seems young but it is growing super quick! (atleast that was my impression). I run a canadian electronic music website "www.lyricalsmelter.com", and it features local (Atlantic Canadian) dj's, sets, videos, forums. Check it out if you like. I have been a dj for 6 years now and trying to get familiar with local dj's in the city that spin edm since i will be here for the long haul.

Are there any good record stores that sell electronic music in the city?

Also, i was reading a newspaper recently and I saw that a "Dj Remy" does a residency @ club nasa. Is this the true trance dj remy is it??

I've never heard of a "Club Nasa" in h-town....then again, I don't live anywhere near Nasa.

And no, I'm not going to go see a pop artist jump up and down on a stage. Count me out.

Well I agree that tiesto is commercial "poppy" trance. But you know what.. you got to support the trance community regardless. If not, there would be none..

I don't support dj's that require, or at least they say they require, 3 flat screen tv's on stage just to show the world they are bigger than God. That's just ridiculous. Poor Houston promoters, they had to throw in thousands just to satisfy good 'ole Tijs, like if BarRio didn't already have projectors and ambiance to show on screens. If they only knew (or at least accepted) that last year's opener TOTALLY OUT-PLAYED Tiesto here in Texas, I think they'd turn all tables around and ship his ugly ass back to Europe. I find it rather preposterous and absurd that a dj, being so fucking poppy, would want so much on stage, for what..a few hours? Not only that, but doing that kind of nonsense takes away from other, better dj's being brought to Texas. I call that being selfish, and I hate selfish folks. Thus, I won't go support the man.

That night, I'll be drinking beer......
.......at home, and maybe watching my new DVD, E.T. Special Edition.

Have fun though, I know you will

Hooyah carlos. I think tiesto was absolute cheese. I remember seeing him in austin the last time he was around. I think that's when I started to like trance less...

Please. I've got photos of you and Carnahan both schmoozing for stage passes at Tiesto's AMH gig. You aren't fooling anyone.

At this stage, I'd depopulate Houston if Tiesto would come drop a set here in Baghdad. Then again, I'd probably lose my mind if ANY EDM DJ would. Lance tried and I think the AFE 'tards turned him down. More fools they.

Atomic Music used to be there too but I think they're closed. There's also Chemistry Records down the street on Westheimer. Soundwaves has a decent selection. It's too bad there aren't more vinyl shops around, especially since none of these places have a good selection of techno.

True.
It's frustrating see that there are only a few trance, progressive, or tech vinyls layin' around. Compared to Chemistry and Atomix, Soundwaves just falls behind. I'll get lucky to find some vinyl I want there. Online is usually the best way to go nowadays.

On the other hand, Soundwaves has a fantastic selection of Rusty boards and DK pads, along with a few goodies for your board, which is the other reason I sometimes lurk around in that store.

He is doing the same thing here. He required 4 cdj 1000's that have to be MK3 and two CDJ 800's (thanks for that little tidbit of info Matt). I can understand some dj's needing three, even four tables since some BETTER dj's drop in samples and loops from cd while mixing. But Tiesto doesn't do that. His request is all for show. We are going to this, mainly because my wife has never seen him live. I personally wanted to go to the horse races this friday instead. But, such scenarios are the examples of "compromising" in marriage.

Posted by Benjamin DuBose on Jul-24-2007 17:19:

Screw the fact that he has requested cdj-1000. His request for a monitor set up is just insane. He has enough speekers set up just for him that will make a normal person go deaf. You could actually use his monitor set up in club 2505 and not be able to hear your self think. Just insane.

The awesome thing is that they finally brought in some extra sound for bar rio just for this show. So it should finally be loud in there when there is 2200 people there.

P.S. We have already turned the AC on so that just maybe we dont have a heat stroke. LOL.

Hope to see you guys there. Even if you don't like Tiesto come out to support the local talent.

Also will be having some drink specials there

Tiesto is an entertainer - entertainers put on a show. The screens were only a single element within Tiesto's entire show. You can look up any performer and see what they require venues to provide for their appearance.

Posted by DJSpectre on Jul-25-2007 03:36:

Well its true.. There in not much difference btw him and markus shultz or anyone else. Really... Of course tiesto is, yes, very popular these days. But you know what, he is one of the many that pushed the scene to what it is today. I know that there are some people out there that wished that the scene was always underground. But look, with tiesto's popularity he has brought ppl who would never listen to the genre (let alone to edm) to loving electronic music. I know that there are better mixologists out there (including me ) but hey you got to take it at face value. Bigger scene is better for everyone. Tiesto is one of the few that brought me into the scene back in 2000. So, be it as it may, don't kill the vibe because some of you ppl think that tiesto is sold out. It's only 5 tables or whatever...Like the previous poster said, hes an entertainer.

i'll be there tomorrow night. If anything i'm going to listen to some music and support the local scene. See you guys there

Went there tonight. got there at 10:15 drove around for 15 minutes looking for parking. Place was packed outside. Had to park like 6 blocks away.

Line moved well. Misinformed about where to pick up ticket. One of the promoters was nice enough to let me and a friend out of line to get our tix and come right back.

Good ratio of guys to girls. Major turnout. NOt good at identifying tracks but I know what I like to listen too and too far in between good tracks.

Tiesto started out with 2 good songs back to back but being in the back where it's much cooler to avoid passing out from dehydration from the heat was NOT fun.

I had to leave early for work and plus it was way too packed and hot to enjoy.

Turnout 9.5
Service 8
Music 5.5
Crowd 7.5
Atmosphere 3.5 (primarily due to the heat and being overpacked)
Friends 8.5

I won't be going to a Tiesto event again that's for sure. I know I would have enjoyed it if it wasn't so packed.

Thank you for reading my sober review of the HOuston Event.

I got plenty of rest before the show and the heat just sapped my energy quick! I wasn't even in a partying mood or talking anymore so I went home before I became a complete bore.

All I know is that good DJs like Papa Sven don't need any fookin screens.
