Why Canada loves United States

Interesting topic...Right?

Well here are a few reasons in no specific order

1. 90% of Canada's population is within 250 miles of our borders.

2. 87.4% of exports to the United States!!!

3. your military is helping fight in our war

4. teams in our MLB, NBA, and NHL

5. You like our NFL better than your 8 teams of CFL

6. Our corporations strengthen, if not define your economy

7. 99% of movies come from the U.S.

8. McDonald's

9. Canadian Law is modeled after the U.S.

10. Were better

Canadian Law is based on English Common Law.

as is most of United States. Most English speaking countries are based on English common Law (precendent setting cases) and the US is no different.

Besides, Canadian law diverges from US law in so many ways that it was really was a stupid point (the original one I mean) to begin with!

1. matter of warmth, not personal, but climate; amongst other obvious logistical reason. Settlement patterns drawn up many years ago when transportation did not allow for extended travel for any sort of commerce.

2. We are in the same continent, its seem logical

3. Your war...apparently this is a bonus; rather than a representation of one of Americas greatest, recent downfalls. The mass majority of our population wants nothing to do with it.

4. We also watch a good amount of world sport, not just American sport.

5. Glad you feel that way. CFL is actually an exciting sport for football anyways.

6. Your corporations are largely based in many other countries, including the developing world. Strengthening the economies of countries which they are based in, sure. But destroying the environment, jobs security in America, quality of products and the future of the American economy it also does.

7. That number is so incredibly flawed, I will let you go do your own research. Look at your Oscars as s microcosm of the world film industry, where vast amounts of films come from all over the world.

8. I've come to realise this list was a joke as soon as I realised you wrote this...awesome. I'd be 15 pounds lighter if this company didnt exist.

9. Canada is historically a product of Britain in so many ways, and as a result much of our original politics and laws are derived directly from the British system.

10. "Were" is right.

oh and the NHL might now mostly be in the hands of Americans (who are fucking ruining the game) and yes-men Canadians like Colin Campbell (formerly that fuck face Brian Burke), but I'm pretty sure it was mostly a Canadian venture to begin with. The NHL (before WW1 or around that time) was comprised of entirely Canadian teams.

2. 87.4% of exports to the United States!!! (You love us for the same reason)

3. your military is helping fight in our war. (Do you really believe that has ANYTHING to do with it ???)

4. teams in our MLB, NBA, and NHL. (That's why curling superseeds all those games on TSN during the bryers cup right??? *puts flame gear on*)

5. You like our NFL better than your 8 teams of CFL.(Wrong..different game really)

6. Our corporations strengthen, if not define your economy.
( corporations, specifically the large ones that are international are nothing to brag about...they operate based on THEIR bottom line, not your nation's well being. Don't get me started on wal-mart)

7. 99% of movies come from the U.S. (99% of HOLLYWOOD movies are from the u.s. and are garbage)

8. McDonald's(Yes...the single biggest cost to our healthcare system outside of smoking and cancer)

9. Canadian Law is modeled after the U.S. (NO...but someone already mentioned that and their are TOO MANY differences to list)

10. Were better (so are we EH!!!)

Last time I checked, 53% of Canadians are in support of Afghanistan.
Doubt there is much support for Iraq. (Heck, even I'm against that one)

I used to think like that too, but after reading this book gah. I forgot what's it called. Was made into movie with Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn I think.
Anyways, the whole process (with appeals and such which could take years) and the cost (which could run into millions) just to execute a criminal is actually less than keeping one in jail for life.

And death penalty obviously isn't a deterrent enough for criminals from actually committing crimes.

What Canadian justice system needs is reforms so that prisoners aren't pampered in jails so that life in prison isn't better than life outside prison. If jails are run in the lines of military prison in Edmonton, I think many criminals would stay away from prison because prison life would actually suck.

Also make sentences actually stick. If you get sentenced for 5 yrs, you stay for 5 yrs, unless you've been a very good boy in jail to deserve a reduced sentence.

Almost looks likes the last voting map, with a few exceptions like the big cities in Texas. How bizarre.

To the OP: I am essentially on your side here, and wasn't too surprised by the silly response that people keep quoting, but you've made some fairly significant assertions without backing them up, so you were bound to get the response you did.

Especially some of the points that are just plain wrong, like Canadian law being based on American law - saying that just caters to the stereotype of the dumb arrogant American. Don't feed the animals, man - there's enough animosity against the U.S. already, we don't need more fodder.
