Police, government and beer company officials have a mystery on their hands.

Why would anybody taint at least six Stella Artois beer bottles with ethanol, leaving patrons of various restaurants and bars from Kamloops to the Greater Toronto Area vomiting and spitting out the tampered product?

Ethanol, or concentrated alcohol, is used in antifreeze and as an additive in gasoline. It is also used in laboratories and for compounding purposes by pharmacies and in manufacturing processes.

To carry out the tampering, the culprit would have had to steam off neck labels from other Stella Artois beer bottles, and place them over the neck of the tainted bottles to disguise them as genuine unopened beer bottles.

Six different restaurants and bars were affected. The first incident occurred in Kamloops in January 2006, according to the Canadian Food Inspection agency.

The five others have occurred in Toronto. All but two incidents occurred in 2006. The last two were reported on June 25 in Toronto and earlier this week in York Region.

The product was tested and found to contain from 65 per cent to 90 per cent pure alcohol or ethanol.

Someone has placed ethanol into 330-millilitre Stella Artois beer bottles bearing the best-before dates of 11-2005 and 12-2005 and production codes of L32343T and L35243G.

Those codes have expired and should no longer be in the marketplace. Cans and draft beer are not affected.

Toronto police and York Region police are investigating.

Neil Sweeney, vice-president of corporate affairs for Labatt Breweries, which imports the beer from Europe, said �we are very disturbed by this.�

He said that Labatt was aware of the first tampering in January 2006, but thought it was a �one-off,� and didn�t react. He said it only recently became evident that the police would have to be called in.

it always helps to really inspect your food and drinks at restaurants and bars. Yeah, we have health codes and all that but a lot of places are fucking disgusting. I always inspect my food before eating and (is this weird) I smell my drinks before the bottle touches my mouth.

it would be kinda funny to see someone just all of a sudden spit their beer all over the table though.

at Guv for Menno I was on the patio smoking and having a beer, I left it on top of one of those tables for a couple min, I turn around to grab my beer for a sip as my hand reaches it, a girl whose back was turned to me proceeded to throw her cigarettes in there, I thought to myself damn if I was gonna take a sip 3 seconds after I would be ingesting a mouth full of cigarette, ash, beer.

Moral of the story: never leave your drink unattended.

no never. Whatever happened to that law allowing people to bring their drinks into the bathroom? You're still not allowed do that at most clubs I go to (Rev/Purple Room, Barking Frog in London, etc).

I'm almost certain somebody slipped something into my drink back in May at Ceasar's in Waterloo. But that was my fault for leaving it unattended for 15 minute. I was really regretting that when I completely blacked out, couldn't talk coherently and ended up getting lost in some fucking suburb near Laurier here and woke up on some guy's lawn at 5am after being there for at least 2 hours. Sweetness.

I agree, very lame. The person may have been confused thinking your drink belonged to someone else maybe? Anyway thankfully you were safe, aside from sleeping on a random lawn !

well I had major anxiety and palpitations/sweats all the next day and felt extremely tired/achey for a couple days after. I've never tried G or whatever was put into my drink but if that's what the hang over is like, no thank you! The funny thing is I thought I was just really drunk until I started to suspect something was up and by that time, I don't think I was in control, hence blacking out in a suburb. crazy times! I guard my drink and poke at my food like a hawk these days though and always will.

well most clubs let girls do it for the same reason you would want to. For guys it isn't as dangerous cause someone probably wouldn't wanna waste a roofie on a guy, and no point date raping a guy, cause he would probably be past out and flaccid or he would enjoy it

LOL. or you could take a 12 pack, drink 6, break 6 without damaging the caps, fill the 6 you drank with ethanol and recap them with the 6 caps using a bottle press.

Isn't that just a known? I always thought that it was pretty standard that partiers that smoke, customarily use an empty bottle or can as an ashtray. I think that it stems from blow-out house parties (as to say: a party at a residence) never have enough ashtrays to go around. With so many drinks going around and everybody assumed to be pounding (eeeeeehheew!!!!), any seemingly abandoned beer is assumed empty. Probably pretty innocent.
