Flirting and Fornicating in Europe

I have a pretty interesting article for you. I say "interesting" because I think it really illustrates the difference in mentalities between Americans on the one hand, and Europeans/South Americans/... on the other.

You probably know that the US-based Match.com is the #1 online dating service in the world. But what's #2? A European equivalent: "Meetic", based in France (but it covers all of Europe and South America).

Except, it's not really an "equivalent" as such. In fact Americans would be horrified to know how it works. "Meetic" is perfectly fine with married people meeting up for some exciting fun... "Meetic" is about instant low-cost sex... "Meetic" has a very liberal attitude to adultery or one-night stands... In fact that's its main thrust, if you'll excuse the pun.

In the US, this would be a marginal website; but in Europe it's as mainstream as it gets. Like Match.com. Maybe even more so.

In fact - the US has its 'AdultFriendFinder' but that one is so marginal as to attract hundreds of males for every female. Not so "meetic": the ratios are perfectly equal! This tells us something about the European women's attitudes to sex, too

Before contacting her, the 30 men have clicked on the "flash" icon to let her know that they find her especially attractive. Before condescending to reply, she double-checks their profile: age, picture, education, income and marital status. She chooses them like a discerning consumer, and only replies to married men. "For the moment, I am looking for fun, not love. I do a first pre-selection, and send a standard reply to the unlucky ones out of courtesy. As for the selected few, according to their wit and their language skills ... I draw a shortlist of perhaps three and agree to meet them. If I like them, we usually go straight from the cafe to my flat." It's a simple issue of supply and demand: pre-select candidates, test sales pitch, draw a shortlist, have a face-to-face interview, hire on the spot, dismiss without notice, voil� - a case of ultra-liberalism meets romance. And low-cost sex. But perhaps the most unsettling thing about the whole affair is that Meetic is operating from France, supposedly the country of romance and gallantry. French films of the past century have all conveyed a grand idea of l'amour � la fran�aise: the penetrating gaze, the blushing, the first words, the long walks, impassioned silences, a steady crescendo of desire fuelled by months of courtship. "I have no more time to waste trying to charm girls in cafes ... the process is too long and too arduous," says a 25-year-old Parisian man. "With Meetic ... I often score on the first date. Not long ago, when I was a teenager, girls kept me salivating for weeks. Forget it." Instant success, instant reward; flirt as you go, pay later, at the shrink's. An older man sounds less enthusiastic. "When I was looking for a girlfriend, I used Meetic and had a few affairs," he says. "One in particular was great, I was falling in love. Then one evening, she said: 'Let's be friends, you're not rich enough for me.' This was such a shock; I felt like a commodity, I had to start therapy." The irony is that Meetic's founder, Marc Simoncini, insists that the site's success lies in its being distinctively "European and Latin". "People can meet freely on Meetic, they can talk to each other directly across Europe." Unlike Match.com, which does the matching for you. Americans would be horrified at the idea of married people dating freely, but making adultery and sex as easy as buying a croissant shouldn't necessarily be France's only gift to online dating. Well in Britain we don't have the 'date' thing like you do, we have random meetings in nightclubs/pubs who if we continue to meet up with and shag we then turn into girlfriends. (actually maybe not totally true)

Basically. "lets go on a date" has never once left my mouth (though to be fair once or twice said "do you want to go to X" (in date sense I suppose)) and I'd have dunno two maybe three gfs (one was quite a short time, and so on) one for 3-4 years. Won't go into how many proper 'sexual partners' but prob be just about or just into double figures.

Dunno what it's like over there?

No, it's basically the same here (US). It's not really some formal process of asking people on a date, more of just either meeting at a party/out on the town or at a common function and planning on doing something later. It's pretty casual. Only after a few "dates" will things turn into boyfriend/girlfriend status.

The big difference I've found when I live in Italy is the amount of cheating that goes on. In the US, cheating is pretty much a deal breaker, but in Italy, especially for the men, cheating is almost just seen as something guys do. I'm not saying the women there are happy about it, but it's amazing how much more it happens and is forgiven than in the US.

why'd you post it in PDD, this would have been much more entertaining in the COR

but combining europe's relaxations on sex with the 21st century instant gratification of dating services no doubt equals a recipe for envy against American standards

I don't know, maybe it's my deeply-ingrained "American values," but the whole concept of an internet-based hook up service isn't really all that attractive. I don't think I'd touch a woman advertising on one with a ten foot pole.

...but that's probably just me.

Probably is. There isn't any real reason apart from stereotypes. Someone you just met at a bar or wherever can be just as psycho and just as STD ridden as someone you meet online.

I don't think it's your or my deeply-ingrained "American values," the whole conpect is pretty fucking weird. And by weird I mean .

Isn't it easy to forget that just 30 years half the world would marry their children off predeterminately from birth.

There is no situation involving courting and sex, in any society, that would not constitute itself as "weird" in some way.

If anything, I'd consider on-line dating to be safer than traditional pub meet-ups, as it takes some brains to get on-line still (and used to be harder & more expensive in the early-to-mid-1990s). When Internet connections become even more accessible, easier to use, & cheaper, then it might be less safe (being that 'anyone can be on'), though hopefully the world itself will be safer in the future anyway so it won't matter.

I think we're pretty close to the later (anyone can be on)...check out a Craig's List "Casual Encounters" section. Some of the people make me

...and hell yeah I check it out every once in a while...it's a sick fascination.

Ya. We are really getting there. I bet by the early 2010s (3 years from now minimum, 7 maximum), Internet will be as accessible & cheap as phones currently are.
