what is your favorite genre to spin and why?

thought it would be a good discussion...

mine is breaks because i feel i can get more creative w/ it (samples, cuts, effects, etc...) and i just love the broken beats. electro house is up there too, but i prefer the breaks. its more my style. there are also less breaks dj's out there so i have a better chance of making a name for myself.

I've been spinning for about 8 months now so I don't have much experience. I started out with trance, but now I find it more fun mixing progressive house and breaks. With the right tracks you can make an amazing composition. Take Northern Exposure for instance (my favorite set of all times) - it almost feels like it's taking you for a journey.

Electro house could be fun too, but I'm just really sick of hearing garbage, like Exceeder and such.

I have only been spinning in my bedroom so far but I can say that I enjoy spinning different Hardcore genres the most. Depends on my mood what kind of Hardcore it is.

for the exact same reasons my fav genre to spin is a lot of the new dub tech coming out lately.

When I play out my fav. style is whatever makes people happy...no better feeling than the fact that the crowd apreciate what you are doing...

but...when I spin just to practise or for myself or friends I love breaks...can get pretty creative with that...minimal being the second with probably some housier stuff also...

I've never been able to stick to a single genre. But I enjoy playing a mix of techno, and tech house, with some minimal, progressive, and breakbeat thrown in for good measure.

i like to range from electro house to trance
but i try to go for the more raw sound, no really long breakdowns

Prog house big time! maybe a little tech house but deep baselines and dark sounds with vocals are the ultimate for me.

As for why? Well when you see all the girls dancing to that music you will see my reason why! ;-)

Anything with lots of energy.. Tech Tance.. Electro house, Euphoric Trance. Stuff I can go mad to!

Posted by Storyteller on Jul-23-2007 23:01:

deep prog to bouncy tech mostly .
It's my fav genre because I like it :P So I play it.

High Faive!

As for me, when I do get the chance to spin, i play whatever I'm in the mood for. If I'm mad maybe some dark goa, or if I'm energetic it may be tribal house, or if I'm mellow it may be melodic prog house....its all depends.

I have a bunch of trance records I won't play even in my room, which used to be what I'd play out. smooth transitions and long breakdowns later I'm into house and all its variants and even some techno, all for the same reasons as above, more fun to play. I never really got the hang of fu-king up trance music, I still like it and listen, but its not so much fun to play.

well, i only spin one genre. i know, im shit

Posted by s3nate on Jul-24-2007 01:25:

I spin many genres but mostly psy.

Posted by Mr.Mystery on Jul-24-2007 01:45:

Breaks is fun to spin for sure.

Trance, while I like listening to it, is quite dull to mix, really.

I am torn between Urban and EDM beacuse I live in the bay area of san francisco where the hyphy and electro sub genres are very big, but playing for EDM crowds is more enjoyable beacuse they are often very open minded about the music you can play, I once got away with playing Give It To Me by Timbaland at a rave in frisco and the crowd went nuts, but on the other hand I nearly got into a fight at a house party beacuse someone didnt want me to play Snoop Dogg's Drop It Like It's Hot beacuse Snoop was a crip at one point.

I like mixing psy-trance because it's easy as piss, all the basslines tend to work well together.

Electro-house is similar in that regard, but I don't enjoy playing it as much.

Posted by Dojomaster26 on Jul-24-2007 04:54:

I spin whatever I feel like at any given time, but mostly it ends up being Deep House-y, or funky if I'm in an "energetic" mood.

I like spinning some DnB once in a while, and I've even played some Breaks tracks at my last gig. I don't like pidgeonholing myself to genres when I'm playing. If the song works, then it gets played.

Oh yeah.

I like spinning uplifting prog, but nothing like deep prog to get me grooving.

Enjoy trying to mix chunkier tech house for challenge, ie layering and stuff.

i've found my favorite genre to play is 'good music'. it's a really obscure genre not a lot seem to get into these days

seriously.. you're looking at this the wrong way. how can it possibly be fun to try to stick to genres.. who labels them anyways?

i play what seems right at the right time, and i try to do it in a musical and ballsy way and that's fun for me

seriously.. you need to learn to read. i just asked for a favorite genre, thats all... ok, you dont have a favorite genre ~ then stfu!

seriously.. you're telling me i'm looking at this the wrong way? how do you know how i look at things? are you me?

seriously... me stick to genres? i play out 3x a week to 3 diff crowds (Residencies bitch!) so sticking w/ one genre is not in my vocabluary. i play everything from pop to hardcore and breaks are my favorite - that's that! AND there are thousands of DJ's on this earth who categorize themselves as spinning 1 or a select few genres. since you're a bedroom dj, you probably do have a lot more freedom in selecting your tracks

dont tell me how i'm looking at things or should look at things. go write a book or get a life you troll...

Progressive house from when (I found) it was still good.

Posted by Nemesis44 on Jul-24-2007 08:36:

Still play trance. Love trance, that's why I want to DJ and it's why I want to produce music.
Admittedly good trance (Purely personal opinion) is hard to find these days.

I will cross over to tech trance.

I will also play breaks and chunky techno in warm up sets etc. but to be honest, I have done the breaks thing to death and don't find it any more fun than trance.

With trance it's all about the crowd for me and not the mixing. The mixing is just a by product.

I think after a while you tend more to think of the performance than the genres as such. It's always good if you can mix it up and excite people with combinations of music and I don't always strictly play trance in what is mainly a trance set.

The one genre I find too dull for words is electro house. The problem with that genre in my ears is that it's so entry level production, everybody is doing it and there are only a hand full of people who do it well. In terms of spinning it... Zzzz...
I don't enjoy house crowds generally speaking as a group, often too concerned with being seen with the right people and going to the bathroom to powder their noses than to actually get into anything.

I know it's each to their own and we all have our own take on the subject. But this is how I see it.

Cheers
Nem

I've been djing in my bedroom for a year now and I can pretty much say that Ive been spinning a bit of prog house, electro and tech house since I started, just as of lately ive started to throw in some techno as theres been some pretty sick tunes coming out. I dont know if i can really name my fav genre out of those because i find good songs from all of them pretty much all equally, lets just say whatever songs get me movin I like to spin the most
