Mugged near Vanguard

I left Vanguard (Ben Watt) last night at 3am. As I'm heading south on Gower towards my car, I see a black SUV (something bigger than a 4Runner...maybe a Denali, Escalade) out of my right side drive down Gower and turn left into Carlton Way (side street between H'wood and Sunset), then it pulls over to the side of Carlton. An African-American guy, 5'11"ish, 170-190 lbs., 28-32, clean-shaven (he looked as if he could've been coming out of a club himself) horizontally-striped polo t-shirt, whitish baseball cap, jeans, light sneakers, gets out of the car and starts walking towards me, about 10 feet away. I'm a little suspicious, so I decide to cross to the west side of the street, but he crosses, too, and intercepts me, asking me what time it is. Then he asks if I have any money and brandishes a chrome handgun underneath his polo shirt. All very low-key; he was just like, "Come on man, come on, give me your cash." Long story short, he got my phone, some cash, some cards, then headed back to that waiting SUV. I headed to my car, drove south, found a cop car five minutes later and reported it.

Tips from the police: travel in pairs, park in the club lot, try to notice features (jewelery, scar tissue, something on the face, gold teeth, rims on the car). The perp kept saying "Don't look at me, don't look at me." Also, this perp was asking me to go to the ATM with him to extract more cash, but I repeatedly said "Look, I don't have any money." He asked for my pin. I just said "I don't have any money" again, which could've gotten me beaten (or worse) if he was more aggressive. He walked away; he didn't force me to come with him...I was lucky.

Wow that is FUCKED up man I'm so sorry to hear that. I got mugged coming out of a 7-11 in Santa Ana one time, the guy had a knife. Luckily all he got was some cash and my friends sunglasses (lol OWNED) but it was still scary.

That's horrible .. but glad to hear you're okay.

WOW, that's terrible. Glad you're ok. I would've been so pissed that I probably would've done something stupid in that situation.

...as long as youre safe, thats the important thing...

Wow, sorry to hear your story. Shit like this happens way too often. Glad you weren't harmed and hope you can get something positive out of this, especially since it could have been a lot worse.

Good advice from the police...too bad it's necessary.

dude that sucks, but next time give him your atm pin backwards. your bank should have their machines programmed to recognize that as a distress code and at best he gets arrested on the spot. at worst you get his mug and license plate on bank surveillance.

THAT FUCKING SUCKS!!!!!!!

I got mugged in Hollywood with my old roommate in 2005..

It was about 11pm on Martel, a side street around Hollywood and La brea. Three black guys with 2 rifles held us up.

They got a whole $50 off me, my old canon point and shoot camera plus my wallet and cards.. All they said was "empty yo pockets homie" I was lucky enough to pull a fast one and I palmed my phone and they didnt see. Right after I called 911 and police came out and did jack shit...

We were on our way to go see Infected Mushroom at Avalon too.

Fuck Hollywood. Canada all the way.

glad you're all right. my friend got mugged in hollywood (closer to hollywood and vine) about a year ago. A hispanic guy and a black guy approached a group of my friends (3 of them) pointed guns at them and told them to empty their pockets and hand over their purses. one of the guys pistolwhipped my guy friend in the group (2 girls and 1 guy)

sadly to say, even after giving the cops a good physical description, there was never any arrests.

just a word of advice, pay the $10 to park in vanguard's valet parking or the gated parking lot right next door. a lot of people walk back to their cars after the event is over, and its unlikely anyone would try anything stupid surrounded by that many people. i only parked my car on gower once, but after hearing this its not worth risking it especially during those hours. also, its really tough to find parking on the side streets so why would you go through the hassle and risk something like this happening?
anyway i'm really sorry to hear about this, wish you coulda gotten the license plate of the suv at least.

Posted by |Thrax| on Jul-24-2007 03:52:

Not enough cops, period.. I wouldnt want to work in Hollywood either, festering shithole.
Also, LAPD is worthless.
