Posted by Marc Summers on Jul-24-2007 01:20:

He explains that in one interview. He says that the flag no longer stands for what it was supposed to stand for. The constitution is losing its basis of our law in the war on drugs which requires violation of personal liberty to build a utopian (drug-free) society.

Ok. Let's all burn flags when we disagree with laws.

Yes, we should when the laws violate the exact thing the flag represents. Life, liberty, property.

Posted by shaw on Jul-24-2007 01:32:

that's an entire other debate.

life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Jefferson doesn't agree with all of John Locke's views.

Let's give Americans the right to run around in circles chasing their "dreams" instead of property.

Wait a minute, is this DAREEFERMAN? he's been at this for a while

Posted by Sushipunk on Jul-24-2007 01:58:

Lol, there's a political party here in Australia like that too. They call themselves 'HEMP' (Help End Marijuana Prohibition). The guy who started it actually changed his surname to Freemarijuana. And he's pretty much just a stoner too lol.

Edit: Here's their website lol http://www.hempembassy.net/hp2/

The guy may be a stoner but I definitely agree with what he's doing. He isn't crazy to where he actually thinks he's going to win, he just wants to spread his message and attempt to change as many peoples' minds as possible.

He would be smart though to get the backing of an organization such as NORML.

I agree with this.

It sounds pretty stupid at first, but with the ridiculous influx of flag bumper stickers, car-flags, and overall rampant blind patriotism after September 11th, I think we have already devalued our flag to the point where burning one isn't really much worse.

The number of times I've been sitting in traffic disgusted at the SUV in front of me with a faded, 6 year old "THESE COLORS DONT RUN" sticker, it's just ridiculous.

Our flag is cheap and worthless these days, and entirely because of our own doings. Theres a reason why I rock the french one on TA these days

Almost makes you proud to fly the French flag as your location, eh?

actually, it doesn't. he addressed points that I didn't.

I agree that it's lost a lot of its meaning, but I also think that treating it like a yes/no vote on a given issue only contributes to that deterioration.

Posted by Sunsnail on Jul-24-2007 04:34:

wuh?

Posted by shaw on Jul-24-2007 04:35:

lol nvm. turtles, etc.

Then you'de agree that njweedmans flag-burning is a legitimate protest. You might as well burn the flag if the constititution no longer becomes the basis of legislation.

Posted by shaw on Jul-24-2007 05:04:

I never said he shouldn't be able to do it. That doesn't mean I think it's the right way to go about trying to create change, or that it has any positive effects.
