if it was the mk2 and the firmware was before 1.80 then the laser would be in danger of burning out decks should be updated with the latest firmware.

I had had a similar problem with mine. (Both of mine actually.) The laser was only working periodically. I was very persistent with talking to Pioneer and escalating the issue and I eventually got them to repair the units for free at a local authorized repair center, where they ended up replacing the drives entirely. I suggest giving this a try. It will probably take several weeks. Just be nice to the people you talk to but let them know that you won't take no for an answer.

warranty anyone?

If you bought the deck at a licensed pioneer dealer the product has a 2 year warranty. My 800's mk2 did. So go demand a replacement if possible.

right well basically
older firmware versions will attempt to read a shitty disc. if it can't read it the first time then it turns the power up (for focusing etc.) again and again until the laser wears out or another component blows up. on firmware 1.80 or above it will just spit the disc out before it has a chance to do any harm.

CDJ with latest firmware
1. dodgy CD goes in
2. CDJ tries 2 or 3 times to read the CD
3. CDJ spits out the CD in disgust

CDJ with old firmware
1. dodgy CD goes in
2. CDJ tries 2 or 3 times to read the CD
3. CDJ increases focus on laser
4. CDJ tries 2 or 3 times to read the CD again
5. CDJ increases power to laser
6. CDJ repeats process until laser wears out or until another component blows

it only affects the 800mk2 and not the mk1

2 years? I thought it was only 1 year.

ya it is a one year warranty...so i am SOL...i am 3 months out of it...hah...

it is a mk1...i am trying to argue with the pioneer ppl to help me out...i am going to continue bugging them for awhile in the hopes that they will...pull the whole customer loyalty card...

CDJ = Busts in a few years.
Tech1200 = Keep spinning. Half the price.

:P

In NL there are more things to it... costumer rights are big. I just read a whole item about it. If there's a good reason to expect the thing still working outside the warranty period the manufacturer is 100% responsible for providing a replacement..

New (last year) European law requires a two year warranty for all new electronic items when bought through a licenced dealer.

However, I've promised this on another thread and feel really bad for not having the time to deliver, but I will post up my service/repair guide for people who are out of warranty. It's really not a difficult fix and only takes about 1.5 hours. When I get a moment i will finish writing it.....
