Gig Dilemma. Help vman decide and share experiences
Hi guys,
i have a dilemma on my hands!
My little cousin ask me if i could dj for her schools formal (LOL can u see where this is going already?)... now my response was "i dunno dude, i play trance, tech trance, techno, electro house and progressive house. Do you really think the crowd will go with that kind of shit, cos im not John Course/Mark Dynamix"
The reason i have given her that response is because on numerous gigs that i have done, younger crowds mainly, people approach me and tell me to play ministry of sound... first thing that comes to mind is ok someone has hired me and paid me money to be here, if they wanted a cd player they could have just hooked one up... so i tryyy to accomodate for these requests with what i have... and thats usually some electro house shit thats obviously "harder" than the typical radio play type overdrive set material... it kind of puts me off and almost forces me to think ok so i need to play at gigs that specify trance at least that way i play what i like and no one is gona complain cos everyone is there for the same passion i share.
Anyways, my little cousins response was basically that her school is gona hire someone that plays that shit anyways and she thinks il do a better job... i fear playing sets like this, because i have no idea what the crowd is into, young people like this (16 year olds) are so diverse with taste, and due to their lack of experience with EDM parties due to their age, they are often dont hear anything else besides whats on the radio and or MOS cd's... and if i have to immitate a MOS cd then i cbf
What would you guys do in my situation ? Take the offer or just decline... material isnt an issue i have enough of a few genres to cover a 6 hour set of any genre listed...
please share any similar experiences, they will help me make my decision. I think i have a few weeks to decide.
i've played a few of these
if you're allowed to drink at this party then it'll be ok
thats what i find anyway, drink until you can't feel feelings. Johnnie can make anything bearable, including MOS
Are you getting payed? If so, suck it up and play MoS I guess, you might be able to get away with some slightly more underground house, or some 'really' commercial trance, but that's it really, as far as I can imagine. MoS/commercial edm/hiphop/pop is more or less what you can expect at anything highschool-ish. It's just the way it is, most kids don't 'get' edm until they grow up and start moving into the party/club scene, and even of those who do, many don't really move beyond commercial trance/house.

take it and just play what you would, once you tell them what you're going to play - get ppl whinging on the night boohoo... if they're not ok with it, then it's up to you.
you're doing them a world of good by playing them stuff that doesn't suck. even if they dont know it.

hahahahahahahahahaha doncha just hate getting asked to do gigs like that!!! Hahahahahahaha you poor mofo lol
do it.
go to beatport, buy heaps of hitz, buy all the shit from the big brother 'party mix'..play some vocally stuff and the big commercial hits - slip in a couple of faves and have some fun.
u might feel that your selling out a little bit, but if u get to slip a few of ur favs in (like 1 in 5) then your doing your job.
youll also find yourself appreciating different things about different music and itll teach you about playing to a crowd that is outta your comfort zone...which is only a good thing.
djing isnt art, its craft.
you want to be an artist, go make a tune, u wanna be a craftsman then craft something out for these kids that theyll love, but at the same time find something new.

dude perfect opportunity to score some underaged tail!
i recommend some...
avril lavigne - girlfriend
Do it,
Think about how the cash can go towards new toys/rekkids.
Seriously though, do it, like what has been said, play the shit they like but slip in some good stuff here and there and educate the little bastards.
Do it, but use a pseudo muzzer dj name so that no one can differentiate you from when you're an "elite" "underground" trance dj

If you really love DJ-ing then just do it. Its just a bit of fun! If your cousin wants you to do it, then I would be flattered.
I had my youngest brothers 18th last month, James DJ-d, played the crap that they all wanted to hear and we all had a ball.
Like Jules said, will give you experience playing outside of your comfort zone. I am sure you will come back with lots of funny stories too!!

Gigs like that are more hassle than it's worth.
Do it for free, so then they cant complain when you bang it out!
You guys, take a seat over there
