how do you pick up a sponsor?

so far I promote myself. I've played many events including big clubs and raves just from getting to know people in the scene. I'm not really a big name but I've played in los angeles, las vegas, arizona, chicago, and once in ibiza. I'm still somewhat naive on marketing myself. I don't have a manager at this point. I do 1-2 shows per month on average. So how do you go about getting a sponsor, whether it's a DJ'ing related company or a clothing company etc... They certaintly won't find you so some how I assume you find them. If anyone here has a sponsor insight would be great.

I'm pretty sure the DJ promotion forum would be a good place to start

edit; don't know about actually finding a sponsor there, but to find someone who has knowledge about this.

Sell your soul.

The same way you pick up the hottest girl at the bar.

Lie the fuck about yourself and what you can deliver in just one night.

But if you're serious -

Sponsors want to know what they can get out of you; not what you're capable of doing. Find brands / companies / products that will benefit from their association with you. Identify your core attributes... and try and match them with the core values / attributes of the brand or product.

You may have to draw imaginary lines connecting the two.

Put it down on paper or a ppt presentation. Presentation of your pitch is key. It will eventually boil down to how well you package and sell yourself.

I'm sorry to say this, but you must begin to see yourself as a marketable, saleable product and pitch yourself accordingly.

There is however a slim chance that your skills are so stunning that promoters and clubs will throw money at you to come play for them. This is however is less likely to happen than the spontaneous regeneration of the dodo. But... weirder things have happened.

Good luck.

Try asking smaller start up companies. I'm sponsored by a t-shirt company. All that means is I get free t-shirts with the promise to wear them out. I really only wanted the one, but they keep sending me stuff. To be honest they kind of suck

Funny you say that. I have a t-shirt company that I love, I wear their shirts to just about every show. I was just thinking along those very same line about 2 hours ago about how I could approach them. They're sort of a hip company, seem to be associated with dance music, rock music, skateboarding and that type of stuff.

Thanks for the reply's - any more info or ideas would be great (I'm sure I'm not the only one this helps).

I was going to comment on your fashion sense, actually. At least now I know why...
