Hippies
Having a little debate with my friend. How would you define a hippy? I would define them as someone who is generally poor, or does not spend their money liberally and is against having a job or doing anything actually practicle. I'm not too knowledgeable though.

You are entirely wrong. Being a hippie has more to do with ascribing to and living in accordance with a perscribed ideological/philisophical position. Hippies are politically marxist and active, environmentally minded (usually backed up by practice), believe and often practice communal living (see marxist), socially egalitarian (in theory anyway, I've met some very intolerant hippies), charitable, non-conformist, and cherish free thought/expression.
The general characteristic of hippies being poor is not universally true as there are many quite wealthy hippies (Ben & Jerry for example). That said, most hippies do not value material wealth and often will live either well below their means with the surplus going to charitable causes or will work for subsistance wages in order to free up time for their preferred pursuits.
Real hippies haven't existed since the sixties.

If you say so.

My mother and stepfather where hippies, neither where exactly poor or poorly educated and well employed, but they devoted a fair bit of their time to charity in poorer countries. I tended to think of them not living below their means but more of a case of working below their normal incomes in a lot of cases and using it as a way to live rather than a reason to live.
I dunno, both of them caught the tail end of the 60's in their early 20's, late teens, I'm fairly sure neither remembered much of the 70's...
I do know they give their kids crap names though

Yes, it was quite laughable.
Wikipedia Define: Hipster
A hipster is a person who derives his identity largely through his association with a subculture which has been deemed "hip," a word taken from African American Vernacular English (AAVE). Hip means "fashionably current," and likely came from the Wolof word hipi, meaning "to open one's eyes," or "to be aware."
