Whats my mixing like?....

I need an opinion on my mixing skills, i'm not sure just how 'good' or 'bad' I am at mixing so could some of you guys download one of my transistions (566Kb) and say whats good and bad about it? Oh and bonus points if you can guess the 2 tracks!

Second track is M-Diva - Reachin' Out (original club mix)

Posted by burns on Apr-19-2002 20:20:

m-diva comes in from no-where, the timing is not correct but beats are fine.

Posted by spectra on Apr-19-2002 21:10:

yea that is the second track, m-diva, yea i thought about the timing myself, but i just did it out of blue, thanx for the initial responses guys, and anyone else who posts the comments are most appreciated. (Good & Bad)

Sounds good to me man!

would have been nice if the sample was a little longer on both ends, and maybe not so high a bitrate.

Posted by spectra on Apr-20-2002 00:26:

I could do 128kb upload of the mix, but I only have 56k.

Posted by Xavier on Apr-20-2002 03:02:

since the beats are correct, how do you get timing correct, I have this problem to when the incoming track comes out of nowhere. I find this out after I record.

I need help with this!

Some mixes sound better on Cut = Abruptly or suddenly...
IMO this one sounds better when smooth and maybe a bit slower..

This one wazs a "Cut" and plus, I don't like it that 2nd track comes in on the 2nd beat of the box... IE

Kick--Kick-Clap

I prefer it on the first, perhaps personal taste but, that also adds smoothnes...
Everything else eemes fine!

Posted by Xquisite on Apr-20-2002 09:17:

around the 0:11 mark i'm not sure if those claps are the end of your first song or what...
but from my impression it sounds like the end of the outgoing track.

IMHO, You should mix in the incoming song completely before you hit the end of the outgoing track... otherwise like some people say it will sound too abrupt. But then again i'm just being nit picky. Your beat match is on target though.

Jesus Christ you guys are so critical! But that's what makes this forum great, can anyone care to wallap mine in the other thread titled "From MD to mp3" coz I really need you guys to tear it apart.. thanks!

the first track is headstrong, escalator. Good track. I agree though that you can't tell about that transition because the sample isn't long enough. I've actually got a mix comming out of and into that track. As a dj, the transitions on this set I made are my best. You can dl the whole set at audiogalaxy: search for dj flesch, the set is welcome to my world.audiogalaxy dj flesch link

The transitions are from firewall touched into headstrong escalator, and then into beam and yanou the sound of love.

first transition (i'll post the second in a second msg.

Posted by Dj Flesch on Apr-20-2002 14:45:

okay, well the first file didn't post for some reason. I'm not sure how to do it, so if you want to listen to the set, dl it from audiogalaxy! and tell me what you think too

In listening to it again, the two tracks are not in phase. They are out of phase by 2 beats. The second track needs to come either 2 beats quicker or slower than it is now. Buy this I mean, you can count each track with beats, 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4 etc. You want both tracks to be in phase by making beat "1" of track 1 hit at the same time as beat "1" of track 2.

Yeah, what he said. It really makes the mix flow better.

ok, thx a lot guys. I'll go back and see if I can sort out the timings. But oDrori I see what u mean by the 'cut'. I usually don't mix it so quickly, but that was my first time of mixing those 2 tracks.

Hopefully i'll actually be able to get some decks soon, rather than using traktor.

Posted by spectra on Apr-29-2002 18:34:

oh and for those that wondered, it was Firewall - Touched (Original Mix) into M-Diva - Reachin' Out (Original Mix)

How long have you been spinning for?

Posted by Great Outdoors on Apr-30-2002 06:32:

I think Specta is using computer software to mix mp3s. The standard is unquestionable, though, IMO!

Yea great, i am... Using Traktor DJ Studio 1.06. And i've been virtual 'spinning' for about 3 months, I have had some experience with real TT's, but minimal.
