-- Alternative student loan?

Posted by ali92 on Aug-13-2007 23:41:

Question Alternative student loan?

Basically, I need to pay for my housing (roughly 12000 USD for the upcoming academic year) & need a student loan, however I have no credit & no-one I know has good credit nor is willing to co-sign.

I would need this loan in 13 days. Am I royally screwed at this point? There is no on-campus housing so I had to resort to off-campus housing, and signed a lease on 30 July (however they told me they could cancel it if I don't have financial proof that I can pay for it). The thing is, if I cancel, is it even possible for me to find other housing and if so, what are the chances that I would qualify for even half of that amount, considering the aforementioned credit situation?

1k a month on housing? That is not college living unless you live in downtown Chicago and goto UIUC where you are renting a nice 400sq ft studio 20 floors up the skyline.

Seriously..... I lived in a nice place... 3 bedroom and 900 total....

I live in a 3 bedroom and we pay a total of 575/month.

you can get federal student loans, without having credit. the stafford sunsidized and unsubidized are geared towards that.

if someone had filled out their FAFSA back in march/april, you wouldn't have been in this mess.

oh well, sallie mae and 19% interest rates for you, ha!

What do you mean 'go off the grid'?

you're a girl, right? prostitution.

you could always try to get your parents to cosign on a student loan from your bank.

Apply for OSAP. Oh wait, you don't live in Ontario.

Posted by SuspicionVandit on Aug-14-2007 06:46:

do you HAVE to live there?
You could try getting grants, although the most I ever got was $1000 in cold hard cash.

Look into getting a Mutual Fund....but they do take time to build.

What state do you live in? Certain states give loans to students attending their schools specifically. I go to school in Massachusetts and got a $34,000 loan from the group MEFA.

imo probably not the best of ideas to ask randoms on the internet how you are gonna pay for college...with that said one of my friends took out Bank of America loans while she was getting her BA or maybe it was MBA. She's a pro at living beyond her means so she couldn't have had great credit

1. let them cancel the lease
2. get a part-time job
3. rent or share a room

it's not that absurd for better private schools, actually. Hell, it was 10k even at my high school.
