How often do you get ripped off by your mechanic?

I've noticed an increase in the number of car topics and I was just wondering.

free maintenance, so never.

I've done all my own maintenance.
Me and my dad used to work every weekend on the family VWs (2 rabbits and a Comby). I hated it so much because Saturday was cartoon day. But then I realized how beautiful the automobile is.
The only thing I never ever do is touch the battery. I'm ghastly afraid of anything relating to the battery. I usually get a friend or my dad to disconnect the Neg.

I've had a mechanics shop (Tires Plus) try to push me into applying for their credit card so I could pay for $500 of work. I ended up going to a local air force base where the guys there did all the work for less than $200.
