Paul van Dyk - Virgin Megastore Review (08-14-07)

I know tonight's event wasn't a DJ gig, rather instead it was more like a "Meet & Greet, Autograph" type-session, but as a loyal PvD fan, I just HAD to go, regardless of a dj set or no set. I have respected PvD as an amazing composer and an amazing disc jockey, capable of knowing how to bring progression into his sets to keep the flow and the crowd going, which in return creates a fun night for everyone who appreciates his work.

Tonight, I felt like a little kid going to see Santa Claus. Eager to see, eager to meet. Passed by at 6PM to pick up the "In Between" cd (same costed only $10) Cashier gave me a wrist-band, reminded me to come back around 8 for the signing. I left, and to my surprise didn't see anyone "waiting" outside or inside the Virgin Cafe. [I was expecting to see a "Roxy" like line but I guess I was wrong.]

Came back to Virgin at 7:15 to find a "9:30PM Roxy" like-looking line stretching from the Cafe to the main entrance, wherein Staff directed us to move from standing on 14 St. facing east, to Broadway facing north. Met a guy from Austria who's staying in NY for two week and chit-chatted all the way to PvD's signing.

Long story short, everything moved pretty quick. Sign, take pics, hi/bye/shake hand; next person. Sign, take pics, hi/bye/shake hand; next person. Almost everyone was given a 30 second spotlight with PvD to sign whatever or say whatever, only to get a nod or a smile from PvD.. whatever recognition you received from PvD I guess made everyone's day.

I'd have to say, seeing PvD's reaction to the crowd from past gigs, he's no AvB (smiling, pointing, interacting, et cetera). Maybe the occasional slapping of the hands along with the beats, a smile, a blind, cold stare into the crowd, and I'd have to say, my impression of him from past gigs, definitely remained true today as the crowd was more interactive with him.

Nevertheless, I appreciated every moment spent tonight at Virgin, even if I only had 30 seconds with PvD taking pics, shaking his hand, and getting an autograph. Having respected PvD for so long, having always been buried within the sea of partygoers for the past years at his gigs, and tonight finally spending that 30 seconds with PvD somehow made everything all worth it .. .

^^ this is where he gave me a thumbs up even though it wasn't my turn; wish the shot came out better!!

Papi - "I gotta siddown!"
Jerry - "Papi Noooooooooo!"

Damn straight he wasn't no AvB, or Ferry, or any of the other DJ's i've said hello to and who've been lovely and gracious. Don't get me wrong, I love PvD, never miss a show, buy everything he puts out. I'm a total sucker. But tonight was an assembly line. He didn't seem to give a shit, was just hearing the cash register ring with every CD he signed.

Ask Jay, he's all embittered...

is up with that polo? Does PvD have a tennis date or a late dinner at the golf club after the signing?

Posted by AY STAR on Aug-15-2007 05:10:

honestly if the cd did not come out today and i was not gonna buy it
the line to see him was not worth it
the after party was the better party
he he

here's a great video I got of him that will prove your statement (sad to say)

- look at the bady language he exudes
(flailing of arms, constant look-around, "pushes" what he signed away so an individual will follow it"

Someone should've asked "Why does Complicated sound so much like The Egg - Walking Away (Tocadisco Mix)? Same thing with La Dolce Vita and 4 Strings - Into the Night?"

He spins records for a living. Who cares about an autograph and a meet n greet. All I care about is the music he makes and how awesome his shows are. It's like asking the cashier at Burger King for an autograph. Just give me the burger (music) that I want and I will be on my way.

thats all fine and dandy for some ppl but for others they might want a piece of something to remember what a great time they had when they went to a show or whatever hence they might want an autograph, especially if its something that that particular dj/producer had created to each his/her own

So fucking save half of the cheeseburger and frame the damn thing!

John and me were walking by Virgin on our way to a bar and saw the line outside.....I had no idea PVD was there....so I looked inside and there was PVD sitting on a stage.....boy he looked so thrilled to be there. Ran into Jay and company and Jay why don't you tell everybody how he ignored your questions and just nodded his head. Z is right about that....he def had $$ signs in his eyes. I thought it was funny as hell watching everybody in the store taking pictures of him signing things like the damn paparazzi. lol

Posted by AY STAR on Aug-15-2007 18:20:

i realized before that the album is mixed
kinda weak imo i though they would be all full singles

but he put on 17 tracks and the cd was only 10 bucks
i was really shocked
usually cds these days go for atleast 15
overall iam likeing the cd so far

I went... but i went cause the girl i was with loves pvd and she never got to meet him... I didn't mind though cause i feel like i was one of the few that actually had an ok convo. I didn't get any weird body language from him... To me he seemed real cool... Eh
I just saw jay and his girlfriend, nice to meet you again by the way.

on point. furthermore, i don't even want to see your stupid ass spinning shit...i'll never understand why ppl look at the DJ spinning. the guy is just pushing/spinning buttons, he is doing something a 2 yr old can do.

I agree.

Give me my damn cheeseburger and make it TASTY!

I just think the word "dj-whore" was used wrong in this thread. I'm sure if it was 2pac or someone else doing a cd signing it would be the exact same.

NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEXT!!

Atleast you guys get some kind of interaction with the dj when he comes to your town. Not even for WMC does PvD, Ferry, or [insert dj name here] does a meet & greet.

I bumped into PVD last year at newark airport after CP. I talked to him, but it was very brief. I took a pic also. It felt like he didnt want to talk to me....
