Hello! Equinox (Columbus Circle)

Do any of you go to that gym? If so, could you help me figure out if I want to join this gym and this location in particular (remarks about other Equinox locations are also welcomed)?

I realize it'll be crowded given the location but is it so crowed a 90 - 120min workout will turn into a 120 - 150min workout because of the wait??? How are the people there? I'm not into going to a meat market nor a place full of inept people who spend more time trying to look good exercising then end up wasting time on machines. Also what times are atrocious and what times are manageable? I would probably go at 5:30/6:00am or 5:30/6:00pm. I don't care about classes because I won't take them nor personal trainers because I don't need one. I just want to go in, speak to no one and leave. Thanks in advance

That's why I love you

Wouldn't it make sense to join a gym closer to work or your new place. Also does the job help pay for a gym membership....might be something to consider.

No advice on the gym, but I would think the 6:00 PM time is gonna be crazy long to wait for things.

Any reason why Equinox over Sports Club? I mean it's significantly cheaper then equinox but you probably have some work membership hookup.

Well if I had a say in any of this, I'd say do the 530am'er LIKE ME!!! hehe atleast I won't feel like the only crazy person on these boards hahah

-edit-

nvm i read in the cor.

I think anywhere at 530 am will have it's particular crowd, but not nearly as crowded as the PM.

I think I'm going to start 2-a-days mon-wed depending if i go with being a personal trainer.

I'll do my running in the morning and lifting after work. Either way I noticed after work is pretty damn crowded, especially when lifting. I once went sunday night, geezus it was so crowded it wasn't even funny heh

I'll be on 50th until we switch buildings next month and then we are just going down to 48th so it won't be that far. I'm looking at Equinox because HR worked out some deal with them where the league pays our annual fee upfront and employees pay them back through deductions...it shouldn't be crazy expensive. I really don't need an expensive place, the NYU gym has been good to me but it's time to say bubye.

Splitting workouts is actually better so I might do lifting stuff early in the morning and leave cardio for after work or vice versa. I'm at the gym 5 days a week so I need to find a schedule that won't drive me insane. As for ridiculously early workouts, I used to workout at 6:00am and it was really nice; I wouldn't mind doing that again.

hahaha!

Any particular reason you choose Equinox btw? It's the only gym in the city that seems to double as some kind of EDM night club lol. I definitely understand about wanting to just work out and not be bothered with anyone. You should find out if they've got any penthouse locations like NYSC. I find the one I go to to have much less occupants than most of the other locations regardless of what time it is. Sounds like you wanna go during peak time though so idk if you'd be able to avoid some kind of crowd whichever gym you sign up with. Sry I can't help with any Equinox info. Only thing I know about that gym is that you can always hear the music blasting from it a block or two away lol. untz untz untz untz untz!

I see, I just assumed you would be in MSG or something like that. I think with the hook up from work it should be good...plus its right around the corner.

there is just something about running in the morning that does it for me though, i actually don't mind lifting later at night because it's more time consuming since you have to go from different machines to do different exercises. even if it is packed you can always find another exercise to substitute the one you would be waiting for.

where as treadmills after work are PACKED to the gills and you end up waiting for people to get off etc.

thats just how i see it plus there are less people running in the morning

It makes sense to join Equinox opposed to NYSC , but I'll do the math and see which one will cost me the most annually.

ALSO

There is nothing wrong with wanting to go in, speak to no one and leave. The gym is a place for me to get rid of stress and focus so I absolutely hate when people talk to me, messes with concentration and whatnot. That's why I can't have workout partners.

trust me babe, you aren't the only one!

imagine what it's like being a guy and having other guy's just be 'friendly' to you even with your music in your ear lol...FREAKY, especially the ones who STARE...all I think is wtf man, I'm a guy I'm not interested and I'm not gay lol not that i let it affect me or anything but its just kinda creepy thats all

and i've had girls come up to talk to me in the gym...nothing big but enough for me to take my music out of my ear to conversate, most of the time they ask about exercises and most of the time im too focused in my workout to even think of chatting them up...music goes back in quickly!

Equinox is super duper expensive, but I would go for it if your job hooks you up. I have, with my own eyes, seen a few celebs walk in and out of there (most notably because of the mandarin hotel and its overabundance of wealthy and celeb-types). I walk by there all the time for school and its a super nice place if you can afford it. I would def do it!

PS: If you end up living in harlem and eqinox is too expensive, there is a NYSC on like 123rd or 124th (my new gym come october and my bally's runs out....bally's is getting hella far away and inconvenient!!)

Glad to know I'm not the only one who has to deal with that shit lolol.

And yeah, runners high early in the morning is the shit. You end up speeding through the first hours of your work day and it's lunch time before you know it .

I pretty much refuse to take my earbuds out of my ears...the only exception is when I ask how many sets people have left. I don't like when people openly ogle others at the gym and I will flat out give guys dirty looks. Chatting wastes time and more times than not I probably won't make sense.

NYSC is an option but I'll only join if it's less expensive than the Equinox deal. Being close to the gym is super important to me. As for celebrities I probably wouldn't notice them, the only people I recognize at the gym are the people who are there the same time as me everyday and I have to use machines after them constantly. I basically zone out

Gym = therapy session. Well, it is for most I think. Doesn't mean you couldn't have a workout partner. Idk, women who workout together are different from guys who workout together I think.

Usually when I see women who have decided to pair up, they spend a great deal of time talking and not focusing on their workout. Whenever I pair up with a buddy, we may not even be on the same floor let alone chatting away ... unless there's something specific that one of us is showing the other how to do.

I've only ever seen a select few very disciplined women who knew each other but focused on their workout more than building their relationship as friends.

My personal fav is going to the gym with someone with a similar schedule (ie: a coworker) as motivation to GET there (thats where my motivation falls flat sometimes). But when I get there I want us to do our own thing. It worked out perfect for me and a coworker once to get our asses to the gym without being all chit-chatty. I want my music and thats it.

getting there is the hardest part

hahah thats kels gym. She loves it. She was like "today I did crunches next to Micheal Kors" her fav designer, and "2 weeks ago I was on the treadmill next to gwen stefani...." and the list goes on. My hair stylist is right next door and the place looks realllly nice, but a bit much imo.

Posted by chimera66 on Aug-16-2007 15:13:

mr.mcfeely could you tell me which of the locations are less busy but I really want to know about Columbus Circle since that's where I'll be going primarily.

But you got there...that's what counts. My lazy ass NEVER goes. Can we start a "GYM SUPPORT GROUP" thread or something to encourage people to start working out and help those that already are? It might help to have motivation and a place to check in with others about progress. You guys have all inspired me to start dragging my ass to the gym

Once you start going you'll feel guilty not going, plus you feel bad physically if you don't go...I get sluggish.

Posted by yankeeBaby on Aug-16-2007 16:31:

^^My problem with motivation has everything to do with my body type. I workout 2 days a week (as that is what my schedule/motivation allows) and dont lose any weight.

My diet is fantastic, and I workout, but unfortunately my metabolism is at absolute zero and working out 2 days merely maintains my chubby ass, rather than drop any serious poundage. Hence, making it hard to want to go to the gym when there are few results (appearance wise....of course my health is pretty damn good depsite getting all the fat genes from the fam). shitty. I need to find a raquetball place or something to keep me entertained.
