The road to attacking Iran continues to be paved

Iranian Unit to Be Labeled 'Terrorist'

U.S. Moving Against Revolutionary Guard

By Robin Wright

Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, August 15, 2007; A01

The United States has decided to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, the country's 125,000-strong elite military branch, as a "specially designated global terrorist," according to U.S. officials, a move that allows Washington to target the group's business operations and finances.

.....The designation of the Revolutionary Guard will be made under Executive Order 13224, which President Bush signed two weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to obstruct terrorist funding. It authorizes the United States to identify individuals, businesses, charities and extremist groups engaged in terrorist activities. The Revolutionary Guard would be the first national military branch included on the list, U.S. officials said -- a highly unusual move because it is part of a government, rather than a typical non-state terrorist organization.

Hmmm, so we just labeled the military of a government, essentially labeled the government itself a terrorist group.

So, according to our Administration's terms with AUMF, we can rightfully attack them now. Oh yeah, we can also rightfully torture the fuck out of them too if captured.

Just a long line of events down the road towards yet another war with our dear fucknut neocons at the wheel. Shall we be seeing our war-supporting Republicans enlisting soon, or do we need a draft for this war?

Somehow, I see this road ending before it even finalizes...

Sure they're laying out the blue prints and some of their points are valid (RE: munitions coming from Iran) however the American psyche is pretty much at the breaking point as it stands now with this whole affair.
I simply can't see how 'they' are going to convince otherwise.

So, let me get this straight. We're going to violate Iranian sovereignty over what?

The pretext has not been found yet. American government is busily finding ways to set up Iranians for an excuse to attack Iran. Then, they will be able to use this new law as an easy way to smash to smithereens and torture the Iranian Guard.

I mean, seriously, unless US officials had nothing better to do, why would they add a government agency to the terrorist list? What have the Iranian Guard done to the world to deserve this? How is this suppose to bring better peace and security to the region? All this does is escalates the situation even more, and less trust and more friction will only develop. The only thing makes sense is the long-term picture, the continuing pressure and isolation of Iran by US and its puppets in the region ...

Basically its a statement, that says that Iran can no longer be a friend, or someone to co-operate with in the region. They are the enemy now, the silent war has been declared. Now its only a matter of time before the Iranians are set up ...

My conservative grandparents would support attacking Iran.

Posted by hardcore trancer on Aug-19-2007 19:06:

It is like coming and saying the U.S marines are all terrorists. How fuckin stupid would that sound?

Funny thing is they are keep saying Iran should do this and that to help Iraq and Afghanistan and here they are calling them terrosists.

Posted by nrjizer on Aug-19-2007 20:42:

Our military is already stretched thin in Iraq and Afghanistan. We've already spent hundreds of billions of dollars on fighting in these two countries. How could we possibly find the resources to take on yet another? Unless, of course, we decide to just carpet bomb the whole place back into the stone age.

we labeled the Iranian government terrorists officially in 1984.

we labeled the Revolutionary Guard Corps so the Treasury Dept. can specifically target it's assets since they have moved above their station.

Already posted about that, and Occ already made a thread on the draft too

Looks like the 2008 election could be the "do we attack Iran" election.

Placing an elite government military branch in list of terrorists equal to Al Qaeda is pretty much announcing the intentions. They dont want to attack Iran right now, so obviously they dont want to put your label on - the world will then see it as an act of American agression - and Americans like pretexts, no matter how lame, wrong and unjustified they can be; but by the time the opportunity will present itself clearly, all these "signs" will be implemented into action. Wars don't just start out of nowhere and without any signs ahead ...

An interesting read from someone (Robert Baer) who is actually a respected expert in this field, former CIA operative on Middle East theatre:

http://www.time.com/time/nation/art...1654188,00.html

quote:

Reports that the Bush Administration will put Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the terrorism list can be read in one of two ways: it's either more bluster or, ominously, a wind-up for a strike on Iran. Officials I talk to in Washington vote for a hit on the IRGC, maybe within the next six months. And they think that as long as we have bombers and missiles in the air, we will hit Iran's nuclear facilities. An awe and shock campaign, lite, if you will. But frankly they're guessing; after Iraq the White House trusts no one, especially the bureaucracy.

As with Saddam and his imagined WMD, the Administration's case against the IRGC is circumstantial. The U.S. military suspects but cannot prove that the IRGC is the main supplier of sophisticated improvised explosive devices to insurgents killing our forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. The most sophisticated version, explosive formed projectiles or shape charges, are capable of penetrating the armor of an Abrams tank, disabling the tank and killing the crew.

A former CIA explosives expert who still works in Iraq told me: "The Iranians are making them. End of story." His argument is only a state is capable of manufacturing the EFP's, which involves a complicated annealing process. Incidentally, he also is convinced the IRGC is helping Iraqi Shia militias sight in their mortars on the Green Zone. "The way they're dropping them in, in neat grids, tells me all I need to know that the Shia are getting help. And there's no doubt it's Iranian, the IRGC's," he said.

A second part of the Administration's case against the IRGC is that the IRGC has had a long, established history of killing Americans, starting with the attack on the Marines in Beirut in 1983. And that's not to mention it was the IRGC that backed Hizballah in its thirty-four day war against Israel last year. The feeling in the Administration is that we should have taken care of the IRGC a long, long time ago.

Strengthening the Administration's case for a strike on Iran, there's a belief among neo-cons that the IRGC is the one obstacle to democratic and a friendly Iran. They believe that if we were to get rid of the IRGC, the clerics would fall, and our thirty-years war with Iran over. It's another neo-con delusion, but still it informs White House thinking.

And what do we do if just the opposite happens a strike on Iran unifies Iranians behind the regime? An Administration official told me it's not even a consideration. "IRGC IED's are a casus belli for this administration. There will be an attack on Iran."

Robert Baer, a former CIA field officer assigned to the Middle East, is TIME.com's intelligence columnist and the author of See No Evil and, most recently, the novel Blow the House Down

Warren Buffet once said, "Buy a company that is so good, an idiot can run, because eventually one will."

Look our country. The United States is so good, an idiot can quite literally run it, and eventually will. We have our idiot in office right now. This idiot should just resign right now.

I am Republican, and my party is being ruined by this high level, possibly conspiratorial policy of invading an oil rich country from trumped up charges. I'm going to start a new party. One that actually respects the boundries set by the international community and the US constititution.

Krypton for the president? I mean you cant be worst this Bush dude after all!!

I only WISH I was president. I would change the way the government caters to multi-national corporations.

Let's have a mock PDD election

It may be a shot in the dark, since my history is a bit rusty, but isn't there a bilateral treaty between Iran & Russia, formed at the 1st afghan war, almost a military alliance, i.e. if one country gets attacked, it must declare war on its attacker? Even though USSR is nonexistent, its legal successor is Russia..
Might get interesting in the international scene too.

What's impeaching going to do to prevent this? You think Bush is the mastermind behind this plan?

Bush is the enabler. The one who gives the orders. Whoever he is compliant to would not have their puppet in office anymore.
