Welcome To Goa (Oldschool Goa Trance) week one of my radio show on trancechannel.net

http://files.filefront.com//;8332023;;/
This features artists such as Astral Projection, MFG, Chi A.D. and Juno Reactor. For tracklist scroll down (some people don't like to read tracklist before downloading).

This is my first week at www.trancechannel.net and this aired precisely a week ago. I think my mixing has much improved recently and I've used harmonic mixing a lot more and my beatmatching is a lot better. I've also upgraded to Traktor 3 so things are much more smooth overall. I really like this mix so I hope you guys do to!

Welcome to Goa tracklist:
1. Flute fruit-Shpongle
2. Cosmic ascension-Astral Projection feat. DJ Jorg
3. Why-MFG 140 BPM throughout
4. Ionize-Astral Projection b
5. Celestial-Chi Ad
6. When we Dream-MFG
7. Boctok 5-Radiotrance
8. Maximiser-Oforia
9. Granada (Remix 98)-Power Source
10. Kabalah-Astral Projection
11. Mahedeva 99-Astral Projection
12. Astral Warrior-Chi Ad

I loved the dance2goatrance mix you uploaded a lot, I'm definitely taking a look when I get home.

Eye well I'll probably be spinning oldschool from now on (maybe with a little bit of psy).

Comments? BTW I'm defenitly thinking about redoing Dance2goatrance (ffs I did'nt know the difference between psy and goa back then) so be on the lookout :P.

I always see the same artist in all your sets it seems. Always MFG, Astral Projection, some Shpongle, and maybe Juno Reactor. I havent listened to your set yet, but I really think you should start exploring some other artists, there's alot of oldschool goa artist, which are really really good. Imo, Astral Projection, MFG etc are WAY overrated.

What? This is like my second oldschool set? I realise last one was similar. That was kind of deliberate. I had a new station... I had far better tools and I had much better knowledge and a big gap. I assure you though future sets are far different.

Posted by Darkarbiter on Aug-25-2007 04:02:

What did you mean?

Posted by Skov on Aug-25-2007 11:27:

Me? I just meant that there's alot more to goa/psy than what you're showcasing, imo. As usual, alot of the good stuff is the stuff that is less "famous", and yes, there's alot of artist with that old goa sound. I just think you should start thinking more about track selection, and what you're listening to, instead of spitting out mixes so often. It's good that you train your mixing, but honestly I couldn't really care about mixing, it's so much about selecting the right tracks. I have a shitload of artist you might want to check out, but that means you have to spend some time listening to it. I would like to help you, if you want.

Posted by Darkarbiter on Aug-25-2007 11:46:

Not quite sure how exactly your supposed to help me (other then saying artist names and albums). I usually listen to compilation albums for new stuff to put in mixes in general. I see the point your making about less known stuff but I'm (relatively) new to Goa itself so I'm only discovering the classics and stuff like that atm.

About quality over quantity. I know that most people only make one mix a month (or less) and I generally make them weekly but I do spend a lot of time listening to music. I also in general... just prefer doing it at this rate. It gives me a good fast way to learn how flow, mixing styles, etc work and what to use where and whats good (which is fun too). Eventually I'll mature as a DJ and stuff will be more refined and I'll have stuff under a hat but atm I think I'm still learning. I rarely feel rushed... but again with listening to compilation albums and about rarity of tracks... I kind of tend to sway towards the lots of quality (although in other peoples opinion this might mean lots of similar) so that meens I prefer not listening to artist albums. I like to know that if I listen to album x y z t and v I'll get 30 good tracks and I choose 10-15 that will flow well together. I can see that my sets would be a bit better if I made them less often but tbh when I weigh it out this is the way I prefer. I'll defenitly get into making the really thought out mix every now and then though (so I don't need to worry about doubling up on tracks).

Anyway I assure you I know plenty of great artists (and some I haven't listened heard yet) so I'm most defenitly not only going with the familiar. I'm trying to hear as much as possible, be creative as possibly and make as many good sets as possible.

Do you DJ Skov? If so set linkage? Allways good to hear a Goa or Psy DJ (a bit sick of Fullon Psy or Progpsy though tbh)

Posted by Skov on Aug-25-2007 12:05:

No, I dont DJ. That's why I dont really care much about the mixing either I guess, especially when you're new and still learning. That's why I dont expect it all to be top notch either, but every day there's more people getting into the psy/goa, when I started spying on this forum like a year ago, I didnt see close to the amount of psy/goa mixes on this forum today, I feel it's starting to spread again. But when you listen to those sets, it's always the same fullon stuff, and Astral Projection/Infected mushroom etc are always in there, I can't blame them though, I guess that's what you start listening to first when you explore the genre. But I just feel the genre has ALOT more to offer than that, there's so many good artists out there, but some people need help finding them.

Posted by Darkarbiter on Aug-25-2007 12:27:

Ah... slightly gross oversimplification?
I don't see how you can compare fullon psy to Goa.
From my time here I've only ever seen 2 Goa Mixes and that was DJ Eccentrics and DJ Sonix (both quite recent). I've heard a few others at Psynews. I spin a quite different style to those peoples so I really don't see what your on about.

Not only that but Infected mushroom is not fullon psy. They've been in fuck all mixes that I've seen (apart from infected mushroom tribute mixes but that doesn't count) due to them being quite different.

Fair call Astral Projection are quite populer Goa wise though.

Theres hardly anyone spinning Goa here(at least afaik)... it's all fullon Psy. Without seeing all these other DJs that appear to be spinning the same stuff as me I can't really make much of a comment.

I have never spun Fullon Psy and I don't plan to. Astral Projection-Cosmic ascension sounds nothing like Xerox and Illumination, Sun Project etc etc

If your complaining that I mix stuff that is too hard then fair call. However I find it rather odd that your making this call after only hearing 2 of my mixes (have you even listened to Aliens from the future?) and I don't really think the other one is too hard at all.

For future refence:
Quick List of (Lets not even get into Progpsy) Psy artists:
Sun Project
Siriusness
Xerox & Illumination
Infected mushroom
Goa Artists:
Everyone on welcome to goa week ones tracklist
MFG
Astral Projection etc (although Astral Projection-Amen and The Prophecy EP sound more psy... even still it ain't exactly full on)

Posted by Skov on Aug-25-2007 13:09:

I have listened to all your sets, and nothing really grabs me and say "WOW, that's a fucking awesome track, I never heard about that one", it all sounds like the million other psytrance dj's out there. Astral Projection is way overdone imo, played to death, generic and boring, same with Infected Mushroom. I guess those 2 are what most people think when someone says Psytrance or Goa.

I'm gonna list you some artist here, you can listen to them or not, it's your choice. You might not like it, but this is the kind of music I enjoy the most.

Miranda, Total Eclipse, OOOD, Etnoscope, Etnica/Pleiadians, Koxbox/Psychopod/Saiko-pod, Shakta, Son Kite/Minilogue, Logic Bomb, Tegma, Soulsurfer, Atmos, Blue Planet Corporation, Cosma, Genetic, Celtic Cross, Younger Brother, Atriohm, Flowjob, Beat Bizarre, Hux Flux, Reefer Decree, FREq, Neuron Compost, 12 Moons, Sensient, Suncontrol SpeciesAntix, LSG, Vibrasphere, Andromeda, Hallucinogen, The Delta, Paper Squad, Prometheus, Ott, Derango, Haltya, Dronebixie, SUN Project, Xenomorph, X-dream, Semsis, Doof, Tristan, Eat Static, Electric Universe, MWNN, The Infinity Project, Saafi Brothers, Psysex, Psychaos, Slinky Wizard, GNOTR, Planet B.E.N, Bamboo Forest, Ticon, S>Range.

That's all I can think of right now before digging into cd's, got alot more artists, but I'm not at home atm.

I would really like to start DJ'ing btw, but I do not have the money required, because ironically I spent it all on cd's etc.

*HINT TRAKTOR 3 *HINT Seriously all you need is a computer. (or a lap top if you want to be a mobile DJ)
And yes I've heard about 2/3 of those guys music. Not the biggest Progpsy fan though.

I have to agree with Skov here. There is ALOT more in the goa trance field than the obvious ones such as Astral Projection, MFG and the gang.
Also it gives the impression that the DJ is 1. new into the game and plays the obvious tunes. or 2. can't take any risks to play the more unknown stuff.

when I listen to a set I want to be blown away by unknown stuff. Well everything doesn't have to be new but at least a decent amount of the tunes in the set.

Just go out and dig before you prepare the next set. You'll be surprised to see how many good lesser played tunes there are out there.

TBH as I've said I'm new to the Genre and most of the people who I'm aiming at are pretty new to the genre as well. As I said before finding Goa is not a problem but I've been getting into a bit of Psyish techno recently and I was wondering if you guys could recomend anything along the lines of The Delta-Send in Send back, Chronika Vol 1 and 9 Pills?
I also heard the Delta was making a new album.

I dunno maybe I'll allways be that lame DJ on tranceaddicts who allways uses all the obvious stuff in mixes. I think the problem clearly here is "seen it before too many times" but I can't really sympathise here. There really aren't many Goa DJs at tranceaddicts (If I hear one more person confuse Fullon Psy or Progpsy with Goa I will shoot myself).

if you want the stuff such as The Delta I recommend you Triac, Xenomorph, X-Dream, PPS Project, Neuromotor.
Yes fair call if you aim at those who are new to the goa style.
Goa djs are always welcome and I hope to see more. Keep up the work.

Yea, I should probably try out some software mixing, I've always to try dj'ing, and I know alot about it, but I just never started.. I guess ill never be able to play out though, seeing as there is practically nowhere in Denmark where you can play that kind of music, and I'm only 15 years old. But I'll try getting some software and try it out, might post a mix in a couple of days/weeks or something, once I get the hang of it.

Yeh I used to do it too...

Posted by Darkarbiter on Nov-06-2007 09:06:

Dunno

In retrospect I find it rather interesting that in one instance I get called talentless for playing the obvious good tracks and on another I get applauded for picking classics.
