What if our lives...

Are nothing but a virtual reality super-computer based game being played by a bunch of people/organisms/robots 1000 years from now?

and all we are is a project of our future/another civilization lightyears away?

Discuss plz.

what if you're wrong?

Posted by noikeee on Aug-17-2007 14:53:

did you just watch the matrix?

Is this a repost? This has got to be a repost.

Posted by Taranis on Aug-17-2007 14:55:

It would make absolutely no difference anyway, so there's no point in worrying about it.

It is almost a mathematical certainty that we ARE actually someone else's simulation

they are. Hate to break it to you, mate.

replace super-computer and civilization by God, and you pretty much have a scenario a lot of people believe in.

Man, this is THE ultimate video game engine then. Imagine what kind of graphics the future must have. Makes Crysis look like Pong.

who thinks that in 50-100 years we'll have a virtual reality based simulation that features virtual humans with fully built nervous systems?

I see your point but no one knows WHAT God is other than a few hundred million religious fanatics believing its a human entity. What if God is a bunch of people controlling our lives. Like a World of Warcraft game, were all someones creation.

I find it pretty interesting, because if we're not supposed to question this whole theory and our minds are supposed to believe in just a straight forward answer to our existence, then I guess I'm fucking up someones project by breaking that rule.

And now they're pissed, and throwing thei light projected virtual chair at their virtual super computer with infinite ram and a graphics card the size of a spec of sand.

What if the UFO's are really us 1000 years into the future, coming back into time to check on the events of humanity??

then how the fuck did we turn out green with big pointy oval heads in 1000 years time?

And our government knows about it...and they've jacked our future based starcrafts. So now our future selves are pretty pissed and paranoid and we're planning on starting a galactic coalition to invade earth and destroy it before further scientific research continues.

So now, this World of Warcraft styled simulation has become bugged and Blizzard of the future has to release a patch to ctrl-alt-dlt our state of questioning our purpose.

Oh my God, kind of like pokemon with mewtwo in the first movie.

You've just added this awesome twist to the theory.

It all comes down to our ability to create artificial intelligence, which can duplicate in its entirety, human brain and its actions. A number of moral/ethical/intellectual issues need to be addressed before this can be achieved. I have stated this in the PDD thread and I will state it again, understanding the physics of consciousness is a fundamental requirement for AI to simulate human actions. The ability to generate consciousness will indeed enable us to simulate other conscious human beings in a controlled environment, just as perhaps we are simulations running on this remote planet. If we can create consciousness, we have complete control over our life and in my opinion, there will be nothing else left to discover or to strive for. All human actions are directed towards achieving freedom from something or the other. ALL. Our ability to create consciousness will set us free in the Zen Buddhist way.

My point is that you are asking the same age old philosophical question, people since the ancient times have been seeking an answer to. Only, now you think of the higher authority as a super computer or another civilization.

World War 3 and the use of nukes has altered our DNA, duh!

Incorrect. All human actions, including the struggle for freedom, are driven by the will to exert one's will. Freedom is just one of the basic conditions required to allow the exertion of will.

With regard to the orginal question.... whether existance is as we believe it to be or some sort of facsimile is irrelevent. Our reality is limited to what is within our perceptive abilities and the extrapolations we make based thereon. If we are a computer program written by another entity but do not have any way of perceiving that then it has no consequence on our lives... our reality remains the same. In this way you can see that reality is not a static condition, it is subjective.

Posted by modehookerr on Aug-17-2007 16:37:

Well I guess 1 thing questions another because say IF we were to be controlled by something/someone right now then that has to be controlled by something else and so on and so on, endless cycle correct?

Don't be silly. Blizzard could never come up with something that interesting.
