Hurricane Dean

Heading straight towards the Yucatin Peninsula and Cancuns hotel zone. This is the worst news of the morning. Leaving for Cancun on monday next week...now a little worried.

Look @ the size of this beast! (catg 4 storm right now)

Track of Dean as of 11am eastern time

Close-up of the hurricane as photographed by International Space Station astronauts

Hopefully this stays intact till i get there

Dang...

Why would you plan a trip to Mexico knowing it is hurricane season?

Posted by Jem_hadar on Aug-20-2007 20:19:

I'm still waiting for there one day to be a hurricane named Hurricane Jesus.

That will be a fantastic day I will remember for forever.

i just came back from a beautiful week there at the beginning of august in playa del carmen (east of cancun)! i condsider myself quite lucky, cause you never know when one of those will hit!

I refuse! Just hoping it misses my hotel and leaves me a nice patch of sand to bake my ass on. On the bright side, usually following a hurricane there is a HIGH pressure system, so clear skies and sunny weather. PLEEEEEEEEZ!

Posted by Jayx1 on Aug-21-2007 00:28:

try having a friend there who is stuck and cant get out as we speak.

Needless to say i dont feel sorry for you.

so what if the actual infrastructure is demolished? the place will be in recovery mode, not entertain mode.

i doubt it will be that BAD! Its eye is predicted to hit further south near Tulum. They say nothing more than some heavy rain and winds for the cancun area.

Posted by Dancing*Queen on Aug-21-2007 01:31:

I would be worried....I was in Cancun in 2004 and we drove to Tulum for a day trip....it's really not all that far from Cancun...a few hours tops.

ill be in los cabos on saturday. we've been blessed with a lot of sunny dyas this summer. and cabos during the summer is usually about a 100 degrees, some clouds and a little rain will be good and refreshing im sure of it.

so excited for my trip

i wouldn't be worried about your trip! looks like they survived the hurricane with very minimal damage. (even palapa's on the beach are still standing) very surprised that they got out of this scotch free. Personally i wouldn't mind being down south in a hurricane (that is not devestating of course) because it would be such a unique experience to witness.

Posted by malek on Aug-22-2007 04:11:

bossi when are you leaving?

I will be there september 3rd to 10th (Riu Cancun).

Dean completely missed Cancun, Cancun got some strong wind and rain but no damages whatsoever to hotels. Hopefully, the beaches are still there.

I was in Cancun in 2005 from sept 4th to 11th and it was perfect weather, hopefully, it'll repeat this year!

i actually stayed at the riu cancun 2 times. Good choice! Its a great hotel! almost all rooms have a great view of the ocean (just avoid the 13th floor because theres an obstruction) the location is right in the heart of all the action, and i found the food good too!

Posted by malek on Aug-22-2007 04:16:

it will be my 3rd RIU and so far so good!

RIU Palace Mexio and Riu Caribe are the other ones!

Posted by DigDeep on Aug-22-2007 04:23:

RIU rocks....

like bruuen said - the food is actually amazing too.

plus the daily restocking of the booze fridge + 4 26'ers in your room is a nice touch.

place was really nice, and clean too.

beach was good. only complaint, kinda small compared to others - and you need to go down early in order to snag a 'good spot'.

Posted by malek on Aug-22-2007 04:27:

which RIU you went to ?

Posted by bossi on Aug-23-2007 15:36:

YESSSSSSSSS! Cancun and Cozumel completely dodged the bullet this time. Good for them! Im SO F"ING HAPPY! i've been tracking this storm and all the different sources just show that there was some tropical rain and wind. Maybe a few leaves fell off the palm trees. I can deal with that. I will be staying at the Gran Melia Cancun, its slap bang in the middle of the hotel zone. However im there from Aug 27th to Sept 3rd. So i leave the day you get there malek. Oh well enjoy ur trip.

ps. My tour operator assured me that my ice cold cervesza is waiting for me!! YUP YUP YEAHHHHHHH!

5 star property from what i've heard...
