Opium and heroin from Afghanistan, the world's biggest producer, as well as Pakistan flood across Iran's porous eastern borders.

Much of the world's opium seizures are made in Iran, where drugs cost only a fraction of their price in the West.

Officials acknowledge they only intercept a small proportion of the thousands of tonnes of drugs that pass through Iran each year.

The transit has created a domestic market. Officials say about two million in a nation of 66 million are addicted.

Hossein's wife said the poppy seed was a key element in the local culture.

"If someone comes to your home and you do not offer them a dish of opium on charcoal then they assume you are uncivilised," she said,

prompting Hossein to quickly offer to fire up a fresh batch.

Several others confirmed Hossein's views, even though addicts are generally reluctant to admit their habit.

White-bearded Mohammad Emamifar, in a tent in another part of Bam, said he did not use opium but said the problem was widespread.

"The drug culture is very bad," he said. "But really the government must set up clinics to help these people."

Sure, amongst the homeless and the crackheads dwelling in the slums of Iran it is acceptable but not in mainstream society. Get your fucking facts straight and don't be spewing that vile shit on these boards.

Iran remains to be the most misunderstood place on Earth.

While we may not be as ghetto about it, I hate to tell you this, but the majority of us living in the first world from birth til the age of 18 are given opium products at some point. Perhaps sometimes products even stronger than "heroin".

By the way, the two major producers of pain relief for the human race are:

a pretty little flower

a wispy willow tree

I fail to see how it would be unacceptable for the kid to smoke a pain reliever for medical reasons; if that's the only ghetto ass way they know to administer the drug, then who the fuck are we to act high and mighty because we do it with enclosed needle systems in "fancy" hospitals?

Give me a break.

If the kid's actually smoking to get high, then HOLY FUCK, what the hell?

Buy the kid a fucking nintendo for fucks sake.

But the kid is using it for recreational purposes. Not medicinal or therapeutic.

So you're saying that they offer each other opium the same way we might offer a visitor alcohol? Both of which I find to be equally damaging to a society.

Not to a 5 year old kid though, lol... seems sensationalist, youtube garbage.

I am Iranian. My family and ALL Iranian families that I know are so anti-drug that they would make the Evangelicals look like the fucking Osbournes.

Don't generalize like that.

thats bad but it happens...I mean I'm in India and generally people don't smoke it here they eat it...but a lot of people come into the hospital due to opium stomach cancer...out in the agricultural areas people of low socioeconomic classes commonly do it..either that or ganja/bhung.

Posted by LoveHate on Aug-21-2007 17:33:

maybe hes not a kid at all...but a midget!

btw alcohol is banned in iran for all ages..so this might be why,

Handing over a little kid Opium..handing over a gun... hmmmm which does more damage.

It is wrong because the kid is not aware of the dangers of smoking the drug. He can smoke opium as much as he wants and kill himself when he grows up. That would be his own choice.

I can understand what the elder is saying in the video and it DEFINATELY isn't in the context of him administering it medically. Unfortunately this happens, but to narrow it down to being 'socially acceptable' in Iran is just false. Straight up.

Like fentanyl:

"* Alfentanil (trade name Alfenta), an ultra-short acting (510 minutes) analgesic,
* Sufentanil (trade name Sufenta), a potent analgesic (5 to 10 times more potent than fentanyl) for use in heart surgery.
* Remifentanil (trade name Ultiva), currently the shortest acting opioid, has the benefit of rapid offset, even after prolonged infusions.
* Carfentanil (trade name Wildnil) is an analogue of fentanyl with an analgesic potency 10,000 times that of morphine and is used in veterinary practice to immobilize certain large animals."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fentanyl

[Doses of fentanyl and its analogues are measured in micrograms; heroin is dosed by milligrams.]

Isn't Fentanyl a highly regulated drug ?

Props to you sir!

Education is the only solution, so I'm glad to see some of us are educated!
