The experience of seeing yourself outside your own body, often associated with neurological conditions or traumatic experiences such as car accidents, has been recreated in a laboratory setting with healthy participants in two separate experiments.
The two studies, published Thursday in the journal Science, introduced methods of inducing elements of out-of-body experiences using virtual reality technology to trick the participants with a combination of visual and physical stimuli.
Dr. Henrik Ehrsson of the Karolinka Institute in Stockholm was the lead researcher of one of the studies while at University College London. He suggests the findings provide scientific basis to an experience often thought to be a figment of the imagination.
"Although out-of-body experiences have been reported in a number of clinical conditions, the neuro-scientific basis of this phenomenon remains unclear," he said in a statement.
"The invention of this illusion is important because it reveals the basic mechanism that produces the feeling of being inside the physical body."
In one of the studies, Ehrsson had participants sit on a chair and wear a pair of head-mounted displays connected to two cameras placed side by side, two metres behind their backs. When wearing the goggles, participants would see themselves from the perspective of someone sitting behind them.

I saw this, interesting stuff.
I've also experienced it myself (while on dextromethorphan); it's very, very bizarre.
You can also do it consciously with your hands, by tapping your fingers a certain way on the back of your hand... your brain loses track of which fingers are where if you do it right, and it creates an artificial illusion. Another way to do it is to interlock your hands twice, at the knuckles and move your fingers individually one at a time with your eyes closed. Eventually, if done properly, you will cease "knowing" where your fingers are, and which is which, and the results are very bizarre feeling.
I theorize that our brain keeps "placemarkers" of where certain parts of our body are. Notice how we don't really "feel" any part of our body until it undergoes stimulation; this is where its past position, and new position are looked up and reconfigured.
It takes about half a second (.4 actually) for the brain to receive that signal from your fingers, which is a massive amount of time.
The brain makes up for this by guesstimating ahead of time (we believe). Thus, I am inclined to believe that we are actually living subconsciously in the past, constantly lagging behind what is actually happening in reality.
Our entire sense of time as far as the mind goes is actually dependent on how far from the brain the signal comes from (toes take longer to reach the brain). The fact that the brain pulls all this information together to make us "feel" like we're living in one moment is really quite a miraculous feat of biological engineering.

I've read about the brain guesstimating somewhere else before, dont recall where ...
I was once watching myself from behind watch Iron Chef on TV after Ketamine, very bizzare experience 
Most if not all OBEs are caused by releases of the chemical DMT, which is produced in small amounts in the brain. It's been studied by a man named Rick Straussman in the 1990s and he has a book called "DMT:The Spirit Molecule" where he tested it on people and they reported very similar experiences to those who have experienced OBEs and NDEs. It's possible that the chemical DMT (which is also found in plants like the Ayahausca plant) could have some link the the "soul" or "spirit" and our soul and spirit could very well be a chemical like DMT (or it could be DMT). Asians (esp Chinese and Japanese) as well as Native Americans and other indigenous groups do believe that spirits can be found in plants and in the trees..it's possible that their insights could be proven true and the world is made up of "spirit matter". So essentially..when we die, we do go back into the Earth...and our spirit remains within it (that is heaven). But we can also experience other spirit worlds, which are discussed in depth in Graham Hancock's book "Supernatural".

and I completely agree that plants, trees and all living things have spirits in them.
Has anyone here actually tried DMT? I did alot of research on it and all I know is it gives you alot of spirtual and religious experience and the cool thing is the whole thing may last 10-15 minutes but in your mind it could seems like hours!!!
Alot of people also have had alot of near death experiences with DMT as well.

I read a book a while back stipulating that certain prophets such as Jesus actually had disproportionate natural abundance of DMT production in their pineal gland. Hence why they had such an intimate understanding of their specific spiritualities. Not just in a sense, literally it can. Many Phalaris (its a grass) species contain a good amount of DMT.

i�ve taken Ayahausca three times, twice in Ecuador once a week ago in Colombia, i was in San Augustin a tiny village with hundreds of pre incan statues about 3000 years old and i started talking to a guy who ran a bookstore called Eco Chamanico and after a while he told me that he lives in a community of Shamans that take Ayahausca every weekend, he invited me to come along but he said i had to obey certain rules, couldn�t have relaciones sexuales, eat pork, drink heavily, etc for 8 days and we were to leave for saturday morning.
It was a friday night in a small village so i thought i would end up having a quiet one but i ended up meeting some colombians who are fucking party animals who shouted me alot of colombians finest and some yerba and i partied at there place until 6am, got three hours sleep, then went to this community. When i got there i had to wash myself in a liquid made of certain plants including Daitura, and then we walked into their temple that was full of paintings of Jesus Christ, Shiva, and harry kirshner.
When people from the community entered the temple they all greeted each other by saying Harry Kirshner, about 15 guys sat on one side and 6 women sat on the other side while the Shaman sat in front behind the alter, they started praying �jesus christ protegirnos� guide us etc, and doing all these runes and freaky chants. We were called up one by one to drink the Ayahausca (it is fucking vile tasting stuff) and one of the fathers forced his 4 year old son to take it and a mother forced her 3 year old daughter to take it who was crying
we all laid down and listened to music (classical music ) while waiting for it to take effect, this part is the worse because you know you�re going to vomit, its inevitable, but you have to keep it in your stomach for as long as possible and fight the feelings of nautia (funnily enough the little kids dont vomit, they don�t need to be cleansed) after about 45 minutes i went and waited outside ready to vomit, the vomiting is horrible because it is really forcefull as it scrapes all the bad shit out of your stomach and intestine cleaning you up. (i�ve been sick twice with food poisening before taking the plant and both times its fixed me)
i went back inside when the chanting started again, and i must say its the wierdest, freakiest, and hauntingly beautiful sound i�ve ever heard, the men and women on both sides are all shaking this branch of a sacred tree while chanting and directing their energy towards the head shaman who is leading the chant. after about half an hour (not sure how long cause my sense of time was somewhat skewed) one man was called to sit in the middle of the temple, this guy was not from the community but from a city a few hours away who had come for a spiritual cleansing.
he took his shirt off and sat on this bench in the middle with everyone facing him chanting their energy towards the shaman while the shaman walked around shaking this plant on his body chanting certain runes, the guy had his eyes closed and was twitching etc. then the shaman took a swig of this black liquid and spat it on this guys bear back, the man then began to vomit all over the floor and put his hand up to his face rubbing the vomit around then he lost consciousness and fell on the floor in his own vomit and started convulsing while the shaman continued to shake this plant around him in a few minutes he regained consciousness and was helped back to the side.
later when the ayawusca is not as strong we were sitting around in a circle and the shaman was asking me all these questions, i was a bit nervous because 20 people were watching me my spanish is OK but not great and after Ayawusca you lose your motor skills but he asked me �usted cree que los plantas tienen espiritus?� and i told him yes i believed the plants have spirits and he says �entonces eso es la llave!� then that is the key!
this group and many of Colombia, Ecuador, and Perus Shamans call Ayawusca or Jahe �el Maestro� and believe its the king of all plants and spirits, i asked him if it was the king of all the plants and spirits in australia even though it doesn�t exist in australia
it was an interesting experience
met some guy in a club last night in Bogota who invited me for a Shroom Session this weekend, fuck i love Colombia!!
Entheogens are amazing.
