Oceanlab - Breaking Ties (Above and Beyond Analogue Heaven mix) with sample

Oceanlab is back!
This track is pretty much standard Oceanlab, with a great atmosphere, great melody, and decent vocals from Justine Suissa.

I like I like, and I can't wait for the album even though the vocals sounded a bit too cheesy before and after the chorus.

its on this weeks TATW, havent heard it yet though

don't know. seems a bit themeless and unintresting track (juding from the sample)

Posted by [Ocean]State on Aug-25-2007 18:55:

I'm not really impressed with the sample. It's descent but nothing special. Vocals seem a bit weak. I enjoy some older Oceanlab tracks but lately I'm not feeling anything by Oceanlab or Above & Beyond. I think those 3 are over rated producers.

well above and beyond might be overrated based on their productions today. but you can't deny the fact that they've done a lot for the trance scene. they brought a whole new style of trance with them (which everyone then started copying and are still copying) and expecially whole new level of production quality, a new standard.

i still consider
"three drives - sunset on ibiza (above and beyond remix)"
"madonna - what it feels like for a girl (above and beyond remix)"
and "tranquility base - razorfish"
to be one of the best "uplifting energetic trance" tracks ever made.

the only "problem" is that they got stuck on that sound, so it got boring, expecially after everyone else started to copy them. i think to stay on the edge you have to constantly bring new fresh ideas.
but in a way respect for them for having their own sound and keeping that.

it's ok I guess. Not very b0ring, but not very interesting either. An ideal tune for ASOT and the likes.

And yesterday, and the year before, and ever since Anjunabeats - Vol 1.

Actually, you CAN deny it. But then again, you can't, because they're responsible for the decline in quality.

Except that no.

You mean simple, unoriginal shit is nowadays a quality standard?

And I consider them to be horrible danceifications of the genre that do Trance no justice. Simple shit for simpletons. Not that I have anything against music that does things simply in style, but Above & Beyond have always lacked that style and the special vibe.

Now, exactly who are copying them, besides some artists of their label?

no it just started today dumbass..

i said production quality standard, meaning mixing and sound quality. not ideas.

well most of new uplifting trance producers, after their first big releases, a lot of people started to use their signature sound (similar bassdrums, similar pluck riffs, similar synth effects sweeps and such and expecially similar bassline riffs X C1 C2 C1 pattern)

i'm not the biggest fan of their type of uplifting trance (the only new trance i really listen is progressive and slower melodic) but i still give recognition for other substyles of trance, even the most commercial. if you fail to see their impact on their style of trance then you obviously haven't listened to mainstreamtrance before they appeared.

I have to agree... not really anything special about this track. Everything is just "ok"... however I think there is a lot of remix potential with this track. Someone could turn this into a really great song.

No, I'm pretty sure that they've been overrated for a long time.

Because ideas have nothing to do with production quality.

Wait, yes they do. And for that matter, saying that mixing and sound quality started developing because A&B came around is just fucking ignorant.

So, all you really have is "similarity", and not only that, you give the impression that Above & Beyond actually invented the techniques used in their tracks.

Oh, I've seen the impact, the hordes of fanboys listening the crap they make and praising it. I'd rather live without that.

are they rlsing a whole oceanlab cd? or just making a few tracks..

the sample isint that bad, it sinks in fast like a oceanlab track should, heard much worse in the same style, though ill agree that the vocal isint the best, still like it better then the last few a&b tracks

But that's three tracks, silly.

well for me there isn't many trance artists/acts who have made more than 3 tracks i consider to be among the all time best trance records ( http://users.kymp.net/anssi.hohti/charts.html ).
only way out west, bt, paul van dyk (mostly collaborations though) and tiesto (good old 00-02 era remixes)

Posted by cmay119 on Aug-26-2007 20:11:

I'm glad to see Oceanlab collaboration again. Breaking Ties sounds pretty decent however not as good as Oceanlab of old. Not too cheesey so I give it a 7/10.

Posted by chrisday on Aug-26-2007 20:27:

I'm not a fan of their productions either. They have produced a couple of half decent tracks, but on the whole the majority are average.

And don't get me started on them djing.... They are without a doubt overrated for that.

i like the singing on this track

Since you guys are talking about above & beyond. I have a question. Not really related to this topic.
But I'm searching for music in the line of their album Tri-state. I hope you can help me with this . I want to buy a cd for a friend of mine. She liked that cd very much and I want to buy something similar for her.
BTW I like the TATW shows from A&B very much. But if their some better stuff around please let me know. I'm still pretty new in the world of trance.

Thx in advance

Grtz from Belgium

i guess thematically, it's fairly similar to chicane - behind the sun.. a mixture of laidback trance & chillout with some vocal numbers. behind the sun is MUCH better tho

Posted by Sinnica Hax on Aug-28-2007 08:24:

been listening to this sample for an hour now hehe, so I guess I like it! very good vocals I must say, reminds me a tad bit of dido

Which the best above and beyond tunes usually are

No one on earth (G&D remix)
Oceanlabs - Sky Falls Down (AVB Remix)
