Le Freak - Insomniac Delights [Tech House]

Title: Le Freak - Insomniac Delights [Tech House]

This mix came from haveing so much new stuff to play with. I literally could not sleep unless i did this, hence the title. Starts off slow and melodic ,goes to funk, then off to hard and dirty. I could not resist finishing with the Italoboys track. As good as the Samim remix that has been getting rave reviews is, the original struck me as just a beautiful piece of music. The vocals send shivers down my spine. If anyone ever asked me the type of music that represents afterhours clubs, dancing while the normal sleep, this would be it. The addition of a third CDJ has opened up so many new doors, and definately has made it more enjoyable to mix. I hope you enjoy this as much as i enjoyed making it. Konichiwa bitches and free All

Nite Mandela!
Cheers
J

Part Two:

Thank you to all of you who listened and were nice enough to leave some words. I got a response to this set from a local who didn't enjoy it because he wasn't in to Tech House. Instead of being defensive i decided to try and fit Tech House into a Big Room flavoured set. So for those of you who want, we now have an Insomniac Part Deux.

This better be good. It took a retardedly long time to DL from sendspace

Posted by Sushipunk on Aug-26-2007 06:55:

Nice set ANF.

I don't really know jack shit about the sub-genres of 'house' (I tend to call it all progressive house ) so I guess I can add 'Tech House' to my list of music I enjoy. I liked the more melodic tunes with this one.

There was some trippy stuff in there. I'll definitely give this a few more listens

Posted by MrsPiemont on Aug-27-2007 06:34:

I really love the Piemont remix of Panic. Looks to be stuff right up my alley. Downloading.

Posted by Frenchie on Aug-28-2007 05:09:

I enjoyed this alot. Definitely a good mix of tunes and a lot more techy shit. I love the last track, makes me cream my pants. D'Julz - Runny ( Berkson & What Remix) [Poker Flat] is just a fuckin dirty song, as well!! Love it. Some of your best work to date. Phenomenal selection of tracks to say the least. Can't wait until the next round!

Posted by iclone on Aug-28-2007 17:51:

perfect for my jetlagged'ness'dom'ism. complex, heavy, better transitions, even ethereal at times [read: trippy, not plur ] -- you should've opened at the end sunday.

ilves this may warrant a vaio reformatting.

Sendspace is finally co-operating and letting me DL this.

I'll give it a listen later on this afternoon.

Cheers Al!

Just finished listening.

Definitely enjoyed the set, but I'd have to say I liked the first one better. Just my own taste though.

Good stuff Al!

Thanks for your support Sushi!
I know you liked the more melodical elements in the first one, the second version was more directed to a dancefloor than to listeners. I foresook the mashups and glitchier side of tech house and concentrated more on bass and percussive elements. Not that the first one was badly mixed, but i am very happy how flawlessy the 2nd one ended up. I am practically sleeping with the decks these days and i think it really has paid off. I should have my website up soon, so hopefully no more stupid sendspace. Because i like to encode in a higher quality and despise Megaupload it is the only viable solution at the moment. Thanks again for those who took the time to listen. There is actually a part 3 with a more minimal tinge and tons of 3 deck mixes, but i am holding off on it for now as i used some promo material that i was asked not to until its release.

this mix is hanging out on my desktop and i will listen to it shortly.

Posted by AlleN F on Aug-31-2007 13:55:

thanks man.

if anything i would probably listen to part 2 . Its much more housy. If you like it maybe i can convince you to send me a copy of Ivelisse.

Posted by CranberryJuice on Sep-01-2007 15:56:

pleins de morceaux que je connaissais pas mais je trouve les 2 parts vraiment cool

le 1er morceau d'intro super mais surtout .......chymera -umbrella (funk D void remix) (cette chanson je l'adore) contente de la voir dans ton mix

je sens que je vais me le graver sur un cd afin de l'ecouter dans ma voiture

biz

Liked this one a lot more. The first had a lot of good tracks, but was a bit disjointed. A lot more cohesive this time around.

Posted by AlleN F on Sep-01-2007 18:21:

Thanks man. I can totally understand that. I don't pre plan or anything, i just wake up sometimes and get the urge to make a set. The first one i was feeling in a trippy mood, the second one, i don't know...the more i listen i think its probably the best stuff i have ever done. Really appreciate you listening.

Merci Marie! Je suis content tu as aimer les deux! On ce voit en Janvier et je te laisse choisir des tracks!

Posted by shaw on Sep-01-2007 19:06:

I just realized, that might have been misleading. When I said 'first,' I was talking about the previous one (what's love got to do with it). The 'second' one is the first one in this thread. I haven't listened to the 2nd one in here yet.

kthxconfusion

I hate that mix with a passion and have deleted it for good. Simply said the mixing was boring (outro/intro and lacked creativity....good tracks aren't good enough i know this now.) Getting a 3rd deck has allowed me to do more without the fear of running out of track. If you notice i bring in elements alot earlier and the tracks never run on their own for too long. That extra deck has helped my mixing as well as my creativity so much..the fact that you noticed makes me feel really good. I am starting to feel very confident about my mixing skills after foresaking social life/ personal hygene to perfect them(when im not on them i have been producing quite a bit too and hopefully i'll start peppering them into my sets when i think they are ready). I think you might like the other one as well, and I think the sets will only get better from here. Thanks for the boost of confidence . I will probably do one set a week and pop it in this thread. Its alot of material to belive i'll get tons of listens..but so much good stuff is in my bag right now and I am feeling so inspired as of late. Like I mentioned before..although not thouroughly my "sound" part 2 is in my eyes the best stuff I think I have ever done. I even converted some tribal/trance heads into Tech House believers.

Et Marie, certainment...mais mon autographe ne vaut vraiment pas cher sur ebay! Fait attention..tu sais ce qui est arriver la derniere fois une fille a pris des photos avec moi.

Next mix more chill and rythmic...i plan on opening with Mr. Vana's track. I really like it and think I have some stuff that will fit nicely with it.

(ps i also did a Poker Flat tribute mix between Whats Love Got To Do With It and these ones. I wasn't a fan of it either and regret releasing it. I was on a high ( a bit literal too as spliff and beers wher flowing too freely) from getting some confirmation on some releases they will be having from me and decided to kiss some ass. It got the Bug stamp of approval..i dunno i just found the flow was shit. It was alot harder than i thought only using tracks from one label..so limiting.)

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. There's nothing more painful than going back & listening to a mix I made & thinking "why did I just throw together my top 10?" I was starting to come off of edm for a bit there, but in the past month or so, there's been a flood of quality stuff (even though it still takes some digging).

It seems like the quick & overlapping style's been coming on strong this summer, and I'm definitely a fan. It's a much better barometer for creativity than the list of tracks put together without interruption (regardless of flow). Some of us are spoiled with the unlimited channels in Live, so I can only imagine how big of a difference another deck would have (especially since you have to do that whole beatmatching thing ).

Posted by AlleN F on Sep-02-2007 16:08:

Beatmatching isnt as intimidating as everyone makes it out to be. It really sucks those first few months, but if you practice it becomes quite easy. Cdj's dont have the same potential as ableton, but they sure are alot of fun to play with. I use ableton to edit (it is really great if you want to play a track with a higher bpm at a lower speed. I do this often with techno tracks that have a sound i am looking for but dont want to play at breakneck speed. Not fucking up the pitch as you would unedited is great.) I think its a great tool, i just find it a little less fun. When i say fun, i'm talking about those hectic times were you are trying to do 4 things at once. Takes a while to grasp, but i just don't get the same rush with the software.
That and I absolutely despise warping tracks more then those days i was yelling at my Cd's like Happy Gilmore.

"Your home!!!!! Why won't you fit in your fucking home!!!!"

Software isnt going to pick the tracks for you, that is the most imporant thing to me. I won't not listen to a set because its done by mac/pc. I think those who act like that are pretty retarded.(i get my fill with reason and cubase..it feels good to get off the mac and mix sometimes. I fucking adore the ableton sequencer.)

I think those who use it to straight up mix cop out a bit...but some people master the fucking thing and do stuff that is unbelievable. As far as the overlap, man when you find 2 tracks that fit so good and practically mix themselves its better than finding the only virgin in the whorehouse.

+1 on releases...the summer ibiza cheese is done, time for the good stuff.

Posted by shaw on Sep-02-2007 16:23:

I'm sure you get used to beatmatching, but the fact that the process occupies one of those decks for a lot of the time just takes up resources. I'd still like to get some proper CDJs to have that extra hands-on flexibility.

As for ableton, I think it depends on how you use it. If you're just throwing stuff into arrangement mode & basically putting a puzzle together, I'll agree that it's a bit cheap. I didn't even know that that existed, though, until I was well into using live, so I just got used to doing everything on-the-spot. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, since I'm doing the same spontaneous adjustments, & none of it's programmed or automated. Same knobs, faders, etc. I know there are people who think that anything that doesn't involve beatmatching isn't DJing, but that's really just busy work. Yes, you can fuck it up, but it's not like you can do an insane job at it, like you can with the actual mixing or fx & what not. Nobody comes back from an event and says, "holy shit, man. those beats were so ridiculously synced up! Fuckin insane! That guy's not even human!" If you don't have to do that, it just gives you more time & attention to put into the other stuff.

Warping's not so bad, except when you start dealing with more unusual stuff, and then it will drive you crazy. I hate when I load a track in, and ableton puts in 5000 warp markers with a range from 60-150. "Well, there goes my afternoon." I remember the first time I tried putting an aphex twin track in there. It was like that scene in christmas vacation, where chevy chase hands his son the 2-foot ball of lights & says, "Oh...looks like we've got a little knot. Take care of that, son."

The main thing I love about Live is looping & what not. I almost can't imagine not being able to just skip around in a track, perfectly on tempo, with one move. Yes, you can do it, but all I have to do is click on a bar. Want it to actually loop? enter 6 numbers, click another button. Want to shorten/move the loop? drag a bar. Want to alternate between them? copy, paste, change numbers, assign a couple triggers, & within 30 seconds, you're set.
