-- getting that thwack sound for your snares...
getting that thwack sound for your snares...
How is this done? I can't think of any songs that use this but I'm pretty sure someone will know what I'm talking about.
Uh... right.
From Rick Snowman's "Dance Music Manual"...
"Most usually, small amounts of positive pitch modulation are applied to force the pitch downwards as it plays, but some house tracks will employ a negative envelope to create a snare that exhibits a sucking nature, resulting in a thwacking sound."
I've also heard this sound in a number of trance tracks... I'm listening through some now and if I find an example i'll post it.
edit: A lot of ferry corsten's productions kinda have what I'm looking for...
I think I'm gonna have to end up synthesizing these from scratch in order to get the pitch to work out as such... I doubt I could do this with samples...
But yea any ideas?
It can be done with samples. a good sample, a little compression and some gated reverb will make a snare thwack just nicely.
Layer a few clap samples, one a thuddy low one and one with a clicky sound. Turn off quantization and move the clicky one slightly before the low one and then compress the hell out of it. High ratio, low threshold, short attack and slightly longer release.
250hz and 1.8-2.5khz.
low mid boost
careful filtering with a touch of resonance
compress the fuck out of it
hardly rocket science
or just sample one that is already how you like....
neat little tips there jake and freak.
The way I allways did it was to manual put a clap 1/64th before the kick, and then a nice filtery snare on the kick.
Layer a couple of snares, boost the right frequencies, a little bit of saturation and maybe some parallel compression...
Personally I dont like laying with claps as the multiple attacks on a clap make the snares attack sound a bit 'crunchy' and, personally, I think it lessons the 'snap' of the snare. I sometimes layer with a rimshot though for a nice wooden-sounding 'thwack'...
thanks for all the tips, havent touched the snares since i posted this but will be giving them a try soon.
