Unhappy French/Disco House: The Forgotten Genre

A couple years ago I was really into French house and loved the groovy basslines and driving beats. The biggest names in French House in the early 2000's included artists such as Mischa Daniels, Dr. Kucho, Bob Sinclar, Ian Pooley, and Boris Dlugosch, but I go back to hear what they're doing now and I'm really disappointed. Mischa switched to Armada and his sound has really watered down, Dr. Kucho took a hiatus, Bob Sinclar made a horrible new poppy house album last year which isn't anything like the bangin' stuff he used to make, and Ian Pooley fell off the radar. What the hec happened?

I'm just now revisiting the genre because my collection is pretty old and I'm having trouble finding some new french house music so please guys make some recommendations and let me know if the scene is still alive. I've included some samples below to let you know the type of french house that I'm into. There's also some disco house in the samples too.

sorry but I have to disagree, Bob Sinclar???

Posted by stevieboy32808 on Aug-29-2007 02:33:

Yep. Most, if not all of his work before his last album "Western Dream" is French House. He's also part of the Africanism All Stars and has worked with other notable french house artists such as Dimitri From Paris.

For me Bob's "Western Dream" album is a sad attempt to appeal to his United States fanbase with tracks such as Tennessee and World, Hold On. A lot of people ate that up and didn't know anything about Bob Sinclar until this album which is ashame.

Ian Pooley is amazing. His work is not limited to french house. He also did some prog. house like his dark remix of Deee Lite - Power Of Love and his own tracks Rock Da Discoteque, Followed, and a bunch of other tracks from his 'Meridian' and 'Since Then' albums. I highly recommend those albums if you haven't owned them already.

anyway french house is far from dead, its just where its suposed to be, the underground. Check out the lable 'work it baby' managed by Kris Menace.

thx for reminding me of ian pooley.
I believe french house is dead. You should check disco house, ive always thinked disco house and french house were close.

They are indeed closely related genres and in fact mean the same thing. If youre a big fan of 70s disco music you can immediately spot if a track has been sampled and remade into disco house.

Most EDM fans I bump into don't know anything about disco so they can't tell if a track has been sampled or not, hence ending up believing that french/disco house are the same thing. For the most they are the same thing so it's not worth separating the two. The French/disco house title is safe to use.

edit: correction

Justice do produce some house tracks.

Come on that D.A.N.C.E tune was totally influenced by Daft Punk. Speed up the bpm and its one hell of a french house tune.

I dunno whether to laugh or just cringe in terror

please don't, Justice french house?? Anyway for the ones that DO now what french house is, I've been checking out stuff from kis menace's label and I LOVE Le Knight Club's myspace go check it out.

They are a bit older but if you haven't ever gotten around to it, check out songs by Buffalo Bunch.

I consider Justice/Switch/Simian/Ed Banger/Kitsune Maison type stuff the "evolution" of the French filter-funk from the late 90's.

Bob Sinclar used to be good before he sold out.

Posted by wotyzoid on Aug-29-2007 19:36:

wow I never knew that, I mean I knew he was part of Africanism but I never liked their work anyways so I've never really looked into him..
