UEFA Champions League 2007/2008

With the preliminary knockout round done tonight, the 32 teams that will participate in the competition are known (except for Sevilla/AEK, a game that was postponed due to Puerta's death). Here are the seeds for tomorrow's draw at Monaco:

1st seeds:
AC Milan (Ita)
Barcelona (Esp)
Liverpool (Ing)
Inter Milo (Ita)
Arsenal (Ing)
Real Madrid (Esp)
Manchester United (Ing)
Chelsea (Ing)

2nd seeds:
Valncia (Esp)
Lyon (Fra)
FC Porto (POR)
Sevilha (Esp) ou AEK Atenas (Gre)
PSV Eindhoven (Hol)
AS Roma (Ita)
Benfica (POR)
Werder Bremen (Ale)

3rd seeds:
Celtic (Esc)
Schalke 04 (Ale)
Estugarda (Ale)
Steaua Bucareste (Rom)
CSKA Moscovo (Rus)
Sporting (POR)
Lazio (Ita)
Marselha (Fra)

4th seeds:
Glasgow Rangers (Esc)
Shakhtar Donetsk (Ucr)
Besiktas (Tur)
Olympiakos (Gre)
Dnamo Kiev (Ucr)
Fenerbahce (Tur)
Slvia Praga (Che)
Rosenborg (Nor)

It's one of the strongest lineups we've had in the last couple seasons IMO, Slavia Praha is probably the only "small" club.

I've rolled a few dices and made my own preview draw ahead of tomorrow:

Group A
Arsenal
Sevilla or AEK
Lazio
Besiktas

Group B
AC Milan
Lyon
Celtic
Rosenborg

Group C
Chelsea
FC Porto
Stuttgart
Slavia Praha

Group D
Barcelona
Werder Bremen
Marseille
Rangers

Group E
Man Utd
Roma
Schalke 04
Fenerbahe

Group F
Real Madrid
Benfica
Steaua
Olympiakos

Group G
Inter
Valencia
CSKA Moscow
Dinamo Kiev

Group H
Liverpool
PSV
Sporting
Shakthar Donetsk

It would be fine with me, as long as we swapped places with Benfica

I just watched the celtic vs spartak moscow game there

What a match, one of the best I've seen in years. Had everything you could wish from a game of football.

Can't wait for the european matches to come back to glasgow - they brighten up what otherwise would be such a dull season.

Hoping to get a draw similar to last year which by all accounts was fairly easy. I'll be booking up for one of the away games anyway (hoping our pot 1 team is real madrid).

Out of all the other teams i'd be stoked with

Inter milan
PSV
Celtic
Besiktas

I wouldn't mind much if we indeed got into a group like this... That Benfica-Real would generate a hell of an income. Plus, we could manage to survive 'till the 2nd stage

I would really cream myself if Valencia & Schalke knocked Chelskum out.

This draw fuckin sucks.

Yet again we play ac milan. thats three competitions in a row we've faced them now. The other two teams are both teams we've faced before as well. I wanted somewhere new to go to, as it is I think I'll just dingy the away trips as I've already been to milan twice and i've no interest in going to the ukraine or lisbon.

Shaktar is definately one of the teams I wanted to avoid from pot 4, I think they've spent something like 40 million this transfer window which embarrases us by a long way.

I reckon we could take maximum points from our home ties, but it's always on the road that celtic struggle.

Arsenal got super lucky, WTF!?!?!...

would LOVE to see them not make it out of the group stages...

Same here. Meh... let's see if we can manage to even get to the UEFA Cup slot.

Pshhh, you have to learn to love it. I still get goosebumps every time I hear it before a game is about to start.

P.S. SUPERCOPA TONIGHT!

GROUP A:
Liverpool (England)
Porto (Portugal)
Olympique Marseille (France)
Besiktas (Turkey)

Okay group for us, Liverpool is out of our league and should win the group, Marseille has some good players but appears to be playing poor right now, and Besiktas was one of the best picks from the last pot. However all of these 3 teams have absolutely mental fans, which could make our away trips very hard. I predict that we'll go through but with lots of difficulties.

GROUP B:
Chelsea (England)
Valencia (Spain)
Schalke 04 (Germany)
Rosenborg (Norway)

Rosenborg is gonna get raped 6 times, lol. Schalke is under-rated but I don't think they can handle Chelsea, maybe they can put a challenge to Valencia but I doubt it.

GROUP C:
Real Madrid (Spain)
Werder Bremen (Germany)
Lazio (Italy)
Olympiakos (Greece)

Average group, Real should go through without problems, Bremen would be slight favourites IMO vs Lazio who are only now starting to recover from several shit years. I don't know how good Olympiakos are nowadays, most likely absolutely useless away from home.

GROUP D:
AC Milan (Italy)
Benfica (Portugal)
Celtic (Scotland)
Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine)

Interesting one, Benfica wasn't exactly lucky but they still have a good chance to qualify. Milan are the favs but any of these could surprise, I can see a tight battle for 2nd place coming up.

GROUP E:
Barcelona (Spain)
Olympique Lyon (France)
VfB Stuttgart (Germany)
Rangers (Scotland)

This might just be the strongest group, while Bara and Lyon are by far the biggest names (considering their success of the last couple years), Stuttgart are the current german champions, I could see them take Lyon by surprise. Rangers fans are probably crying in a corner right now, but they're not an useless team.

GROUP F:
Manchester United (England)
AS Roma (Italy)
Sporting Lisbon (Portugal)
Dynamo Kiev (Ukraine)

Haha, Sporting was massively unlucky here. Man Utd will go through no matter what, Roma should do as well, and they surely want to revenge the 7-1 thrashing of last year. Dinamo Kiev aren't at all what they've used to be, Sporting are favourites to take the UEFA Cup spot.

GROUP G:
Inter Milan (Italy)
PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands)
CSKA Moscow (Russia)
Fenerbahce (Turkey)

I can smell a super Fenerbahe coming from nowhere and surprising everyone. Inter might be out of their league, but they should be able to annoy PSV, despite the very good recent record of PSV in the Champions League. CSKA aren't bad.

GROUP H:
Arsenal (England)
Sevilla (Spain) or AEK Athens (Greece)
Steaua Bucharest (Romania)
Slavia Prague (Czech Republic)

Steaua and Slavia? LOL! Assuming Sevilla will knock AEK out (which is very very likely), this group is decided from the beggining, except for a natural catastrophe.

Looks like a great draw, gonna be a fun year.

Great! Internazionale FC have 3 not so problematic oponents! PSV and CSKA - both teams have my sympathy, but there is only one team in my heart! Well, also without Alvaro Recoba is possible to reach the top....

Day 1
Tuesday
Marseille - Beşiktaş
Porto - Liverpool
Chelsea - Rosenborg
Schalke 04 - Valencia
Real Madrid - Bremen
Olympiacos - Lazio
Milan - Benfica
Shakhtar - Celtic

Wednesday
Rangers - Stuttgart
Barcelona - Lyon
Roma - Dynamo Kyiv
Sporting - Manchester United
PSV - CSKA Moskva
Fenerbahe - Internazionale
Arsenal - Sevilla
Slavia Praha - Steaua Bucaresti

I'm not making any guesses this year... but I'd sure like Benfica could get a meagre point from Milan

Too bad, no deals...

Solid 2-0 start to the defence of the title

Saw the game and was pleased with the result although we could've scored another 2 or 3 goals. Definatley need improvement in some areas but for the moment i think the group stage should be ok for us.

I also might add that i was suprised with the Shaktar-Celtic result and also happy with Lazio's equalizer to Olymiakos.

Very shaky defenders. When Luiso's injured, you can't expect nothing else...

but that first goal is a gift from Quim

I don't get what's so surprising with Shakhtar's win. They've been a pretty strong team for years and have made some big signings this season, like Lucarelli. And they have a great fan atmosphere at home. They're pretty much in the same league of Celtic, the only difference is that Celtic managed to qualify for the knockout rounds recently (as they benefited from being in an easy group versus Benfica and Kobenhavn), Shakhtar are yet to do that.

Posted by nettwerk on Sep-19-2007 23:09:

I'm bored.

Day 1
Tuesday
Marseille 2-0 Beşiktaş
Porto 1-1 Liverpool
Chelsea 1-1 Rosenborg
Schalke 04 0-1 Valencia
Real Madrid 2-1 Bremen
Olympiacos 1-1 Lazio
Milan 2-1 Benfica
Shakhtar 2-0 Celtic

Wednesday
Rangers 2-1 Stuttgart
Barcelona 3-0 Lyon
Roma 2-0 Dynamo Kyiv
Sporting 0-1 Manchester United
PSV 2-1 CSKA Moskva
Fenerbahçe 1-0 Internazionale
Arsenal 3-0 Sevilla
Slavia Praha 2-1 Steaua Bucaresti

It's great to have 3 teams on the CL and not one managing to win a game...
