First gig and they require an invoice

Hey just wondering
i picked up my first gig and they require an invoice from me?

all you need is a piece of paper with the relevant details on it

invoice number
ABN number
your name/stage name
the cost

its not rocket science. go to kmart and look for an invoice booklet in the stationery section.

use ms word templates and fill in the details, no GST if no ABN provided.

might be an idea to register yourself as a sole trader so you get an abn, it's pretty easy from the australian business register, you can get one here:

Getting an ABN would definitely be an option. I deal with ABN and business registrations every single day, and have for many years. So here is some more info

Only get an ABN if you feel that you are running an enterprise. Doing one or two gigs here and there may not suffice as an enterprise, but since it is a self assessed system, the choice is yours. Keep in mind that an individual is NOT automatically entitled to an ABN. You need to be able to justify that you are either running a business or an enterprise of some sort, even if very small scale. Part time DJing would probably do the trick, but needs to have at least some repetition or viability for making profit.

There are a lot of ABNs out there which are not necessary or even correctly registered. I am not sure what your situation is, but if this is a very irregular thing and more of a hobby, then you should not apply for an ABN. All you need to do is download a "statement by supplier" form from the ATO website and by filling out the appropriate boxes you will state to the payer that what you are doing is only a hobby or at least won't result in any reasonable profit. If you fill out this form and give it to the venue/promoter who are paying you, you should be covered. This way there is no requirement to provide an ABN when getting paid and everyone is happy (this is a legally approved document and the venue needs to accept it in place of an ABN... it is very commonly used by many beginner artists).

If you feel that you are entitled to an ABN and you do wanna pursue more gigs as an enterprise (like many of us do), then you should apply online as Jayse said. Keep in mind that you are only REQUIRED to register for gst IF your ABN turnover is $75,000 or more per 12 months. Most small businesses register for GST incorrectly thinking they need to, and end up dealing with so many unnecessary obligations like BAS lodgment every 3 months. If you register for GST, you will need to charge it and can also claim it. If you choose to get an ABN alone and no GST, you must NOT charge GST on your invoices, and just show your income on your tax return at the end of the year. Very simple.

My advice, stay away from GST if you end up getting an ABN... pointless for a small scale business without major expenses to deal with the GST system. Just remember NOT to put GST on your invoice if you are not registered for it.

I really hope that helps mate!!
