New Allen & Heath Xone:42 mixer

ALLEN & HEATH ADDS XONE:42 USB MIXER TO LEADING DJ RANGE

Allen & Heath has made an addition to the leading Xone DJ range, with the launch of the Xone:42 high performance 4-channel DJ mixer with USB audio interface.

"Designed to seamlessly interface with current leading edge DJ technology, the Xone:42 has an ergonomic, intuitive layout, making it one of the easiest to use hi-tech mix tools around," comments Xone Designer, Andy Rigby-Jones.

The Xone:42's feature set is built around 4 dual-input stereo channels; channels 1 and 4 are phono/line, while channels 2 and 3 are line/line. All four channels have a powerful +6dB to total kill 3-band EQ, a 9-segment 3-colour bar meter, gain control, and 60mm VCA faders with illuminated X/Y crossfader selection. Xone's legendary Voltage Control Filter is included on each channel via illuminated assignment switches, with selectable filter type, resonance, and frequency controls.

The mixer sports a new and original feature - the 'X-FX' system - enabling an external effects processor to be easily interfaced. A single knob controls the proportion of the channel signal sent to the effects unit, from 0 to 100%, and the affected signal is returned to the main mix, or can be routed through the filter.

The Xone:42 incorporates a USB audio interface for easy connection to a computer and integration of digital media. It can be used to play back music files from a laptop and to record mixes from the Xone:42, or, when used with appropriate software, as a digital DJ effects unit that can be patched into the X-FX system. The USB input combines with an XLR microphone input to provide an additional channel with two band EQ and rotary level control.

The mixer also features a 45mm VCA crossfader with curve control, and a powerful monitoring section with split cue control, mix to cue, two headphone outputs (1/4" and 3.5mm), dedicated booth output, and balanced main mix outputs on XLR.

SRP is 599 (ex VAT) and the mixer will be available from autumn 2007.

Judging from that description the pics and the price, this might be exactly what i'm looking for. Looking forward to some reviews on this piece of equipment.

Looking at the pic, the only thing this mixer might be missing is the option to upgrade it with a rotary set.

Totally agree, particularly with the fx send in place. Excellent move by A&H and at a decent price too.

this looks totally awesome, i would sell my 62 for this for sure. But is there any other mixers being launched from A&H soon to upgrade the 62?

see? i don't understand that. less EQ's, easier FX setup + USB. i dunno.

also i see it shares the same cueing system as the xone:62, which is teh suck. worst feature on the xone.

You know, up until a week or two ago I would have applauded this. But after having done a few recent gigs on the DJM-500/600 series (which has the same type of function for send/recieve) I realize that the Xone 92's method of indivudal Aux 1/2 controls per channel is superior.

The problem I ran into is this: say I have one deck playing a track, and from the other deck I run the signal into my EFX-1000 and make a Feedback Loop, which I leave running over the track. With the fader now up (so that the loop is audable), I can no longer cue on this channel at all.

Now, I would have assumed that if I were to get my Loop from a deck on channel 1, I could just open the fader on empty channel 2, then switch the send/receive from channel 1 to channel 2, effectively moving the return channel--and thus the Loop--from 1 to 2, allowing me to then cue on channel 1's deck. But in practice this did not work. If I had a loop running on one channel, any attempt to switch channels silenced the loop for some inexplicable reason. If I switched back to the channel from which it came, the loop would come back (but I still couldn't cue).

So for me, unless I can alternate which channels recieve a loop from my EFX-1000, then this send/recieve feature won't work. Actually, I just realzed that there's no good fucking reason why that shouldn't work just fine, and that the DJM-500/600 series are just retarded.

Very sexy mixer, but I'll stick with my 92

This looks great! I love this time of year when all the new gear comes out.

It was bought 7 days ago.....full refund!

Probably not really going to do that though...

Seriously, if I didn't get the 92 3 months ago, I might have got this one. It's a nice mix between the 92 and 62. The X:FX function is nice, but I'm already used to the AUX/SEND on my 92 with the EFX1000.

Good work A&H ! I'm really looking forward the next Xone:92...possibly a Xone:92 with X:FX AND AUX/SEND.

Posted by shaw on Sep-06-2007 03:32:

too bad it doesn't have the MIDI on/off switch like the 700.

No it's not in the slightest. On this mixer you have individual FX send levels for each channel, and if you wanted to bring them back in on a channel instead of into the FX return you can - which would make them act exactly the same as the Aux sends. Just here you've got the added benefit of being able to return them into the mixer as insert effects, so that you don't have to go messing around with other channels to use the effects.
