Tenor Luciano Pavarotti dead at 71

| (CNN) -- Famed opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who appeared on stage with singers as varied as opera star Dame Joan Sutherland, U2's Bono and Liza Minnelli, died Thursday after suffering from pancreatic cancer, his manager Terri Robson said in a statement. He was 71. "The great tenor, Luciano Pavarotti, died today at 5:00 a.m. at his home in Modena, the city of his birth," according to Robson. "The Maestro fought a long, tough battle against the pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life. In fitting with the approach that characterized his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness." According to Robson, his wife, Nicoletta; his daughters, Lorenza, Cristina, Giuliana and Alice; his sister, Gabriela; and other relatives and friends were at his side when he died. The portly singer retired from staged opera in 2004, but was on a "farewell tour" of concerts when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2006 and underwent emergency surgery to remove the tumor. |

A legend in opera and classic music in general
sad news
RIP
Very sad news
My mom was a huge fan so I grew up listening to him. He had such an amazing/powerful voice
R.I.P.
Outstanding vocalist. Unfortunate that I never got to see him in person.
Hopefully they'll play lots of his work on 96.3 or Radio 2 today.
I always loved the way he sang Nessun Dorma, which is also one of my favorite opera stages*.

*before it was made 'cool' by Paul Potts.

Def a sad day..truly a legend
RIP Luciano
He was a good man...
RIP to a talented man. I admire anyone that can sway our emotions through music, but to do it with your only instrument being your vocal chords? Amazing.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go sell all my stocks in pasta and sandwich companies...
The fat lady sings
Bravo Luciano, you brought Opera to the mainstream.

That sux. RIP. At least his voice is recorded on CD's so people can listen to him anytime they feel like they need to...
(and hopefully death at least brought him relief from suffering from cancer, if you know how I mean it)
fuck. quite unfortunate and sad. This guy is truly a legend and his legacy will live on for a long time to come. RIP Pavarotti
another good singer passed away..... very sad... RIP
He sounded amazing, just had "that" sound. I felt like he'd be around forever.
Opera's a tough thing for a tough audience. I heard a story about ol' Luc getting booed over one wrong note. One note! Avril Lavinge doesn't get cued to commercial over a whole song off key on national TV!
Now what are we gonna do?
Ridi, Pagliaccio,
sul tuo amore infranto!
Ridi del duol, che t'avvelena il cor!
