First Gig: Saturday Evening till Sunrise

Well, Not my 'first' gig.. But my first 'proper' gig. My mate is having a house party, And his mate is having a bday party .. In the same house. So about 40 or so people are to be expected.

Iv been elected to be the DJ, Heres the best bit - I dont have to play crap! House/Electro House/Funky House/And some Deep House while everyone is winding down from the alcohol..

I have been told there will be a decent sound system, Light setup, And alcohol.. What more could i ask for?

Hopefully this will be the start of something big, I'v been practicing pretty hardcore in hopes i will knock peoples socks off and they will say "Hey, You're a rad dj.. Come play at my party" .. Wishful thinking..

Tips are welcomed

And no, This isint a 'help me find music' or 'omg im playing live what do i do!?!' thread. More like me just being really excited i thought id make a thread about it. Seems to be a popular action to take when something interesting happens around here...

Posted by Allied Nations on Sep-06-2007 20:04:

good to hear some long sets for new guys... it's a great way to learn, when it's just you and the decks for an exteeended period of time.

Also cool to hear different styles will be played.

What's the scene like down in Brisbane? Or better yet, what's it like in your community?

EDM isin't really popular in this area TBH, Radio/MTV etc.. It's all the same.. Hip hop/Top40 stuff/Very overplayed and annoying songs. Some times you get some good DJs (I think Deadmau5 and Fred Everything are here tonight). We've also had names like Armin Van Buuren and more.

The closest you will generally get to EDM on the radio is usually Nick Skitz stuff. And apparently they sometimes play some Electro house.. If you wan't to hear good music you generally need to find a club in the city/gold coast/chuck your own house party.

Go nuts. Really. Have fun. lol

Posted by wesleysnipez on Sep-07-2007 06:31:

Yeah have fun since still can remember my first gig at house party for local millionaire man son who is spoiled brat. He asked for certain DJ but he was booked so he sent him my way and did 12 hour set fine with only 4 15 minutes breaks every 3 hours and I rocked his socks of so he was happy.

Posted by pactdonkey on Sep-07-2007 10:43:

12 hours! did u repeat any songs? that is crazy...im seeing armin tonight in nottingham so hopefully get some inspiration before my set tomo night!

Posted by wesleysnipez on Sep-08-2007 00:24:

Only 1 song twice played CRW-I Feel Love and then later in the night played different mix called R.A.F Zone mix other then that I can't recall if there was any others since it has been 6 years since I remember it. Since I done over 500 gigs since then and been resident DJ for local club here for 4 years and co-owner with old college buddy of mine.

awesome ye i cant wait too! apart from the club i saw armin last night has fucked my ears up but we'll have a bash! what ear protection did you buy?

Posted by Fl@k Monkey on Sep-09-2007 10:23:

It sucked.

First of all, of all the times.. This weekend there was scheduled railroad work so after waiting at the station for 2 hours for my train.. I eventually jumped on the only train that kept passing by.. And realised it was the only train. Half way i had to change over to a bus.. Then back to a train.. Ended up getting there by about 7pm. About 20 people there when i arrived.

Setup my decks, And start busting out a mix.. Was banging it out. Had people dancing, tapping there feet etc. One girl even asked if id do a gig for her own party.. But i didn't get to give her my number before she left.

Then the owners (who told me to come and play house) best mates gf comes over to me.. And asks me to play a cd compilation shes already made of top40 crap and oldie rock songs.. Since it was her birthday party in the first place i agree.. Put the cd on and walk away. Grabbed a beer.. Had a bit of a chat with some of the people there, Even got taught how to juggle.

Later on, the owner (who told me to play house) comes back.. And tells me to play House now.. So i get behind the decks, Start banging it out again and again.. Told to put on the same friggin cd by the same girl.. "Ok!" i put on the same cd (which earlier had already played until the end so it was now playing for a 2nd time).

By this time everyones getting kind of annoyed and leaving fast, drunk people who were much taller and tougher looking than me are getting to close to my gear for comfort. One girl trying to be a prick tease and dance over me.. I'm getting fed up so i start slowly packing the rest of the gear not in use.. Then i get told to play something 'Upbeat' that people will know.. I try to explain im a house dj.. I play house music.

I have a look through my wallet, And find a remix of Madonna - Get Together.. So i put it on, The same girl comes back.. "hey, i have a fergie cd.. can you play it?" grrrrr..

As much as id like to have, I couldn't say shit.. It was her party and the owners mates bf (who also part-owned the house). Then the owners best mate who is a pretty rad guy comes over and asks if i want to do a bit of b2b mixing with him.. I whole heartedly agree and not long into it.. His gf comes over asking for "some rnb". Of course.. He dosent say anything. And i piss off to sit at the gutter for a smoko and beer.

Whilst in the gutter im also watching the remainder of the people who came to the party.. Leaving.. looking very annoyed and not like they had a good time.

5:00am

I go back in, theres some people on the back veranda.. winding down, getting high etc.. Can't see the guys gf in sight so i go in.. setup my gear.. And start playing some down-temp stuff.. She comes back, few minutes later her bf comes over to me "they want rnb". My reply was "O rly?"

I eject my cds, packup as much as i can.. His gf comes over to me and goes

His gf: "hey.. I'm sorry, Iv just realised iv been a bit of a bitch and not really let you do anything you wanted to do.. Can you please play your music now?"

Me: No.

His gf: You kinda over it?

Me: Yes

His gf: Iv been a bitch havent i?

Me: Yes

His gf: I'm sorry..

Me: *Grabs bag, jacket, Slams the door and leaves*

Waited at the fucking train station for a good 2 hours before the trains actually start. Then switched to a bus, Train, bus etc.. Walked home from the station, Collapsed on the bed and i just woke now.. Its 8:23pm

Shittest.Night.Ever

oh man that sounds shit!...gutted mate. iv had that happen to me before and some house parties where people are like 'i have a playist on my ipod can i put it on?!'...ye cus i prepared this set, came to the party, put effort into mixing these awesome songs and u think u can just play ur playlist?! get real.

Last night went quite good compared to yours i guess but it wasnt amazing...about 15 turned up so of course they all drank together, smoked together which meant the dancefloor would be empty every now and then...but my set went down well played from 1130 till 3 with no fuck ups..and at one point when fly away (cosmic gate remix) dropped the barn roof nearly raised!.
All in all an alright night but no respect as a dj..i think its jealousy or just naive to how hard djin is!

I think untill u make it big time there are going to be some rough nights which make u think wats the point..so take it as an experiance and keep playin untill u find that special crowd!

I know right? It was a pretty big thing for me since it was the first big gig iv ever done and id put in all that effort to get my gear over etc.. Wasted.

Yeah, I have to agree on this. My time will come

Sorry to hear that man. People who book at house parties will never really realize that you aren't a mobile dj (aka bar mitzvah, kids parties, weddings, ipod mixing). It can suck because they get paid alot of money to do very little and make the general public think all dj's are like this. Everytime you play a party in an environment that isn't suited to your style of music expect requests. That CD thing was funny, but you handeled it well...bottom line is if its going to suck at least collect your paycheck before burning bridges.

Have a few business card made (really not expensive). When someone like that girl mentions a booking, whip it out (the card...the other thing when she's passed out drunk) and give it to her right away. Buyers are liars and will say the dumbest things without meaning them. At least if she had your card, she would call if she was serious about the booking or lonely and needed her bootyhouse beatmatched

At least you had the right attitude. Most people like ourselves who thrive on theis music think that everyone will know what a true DJ is, when in reality most of the world has no clue to who even that douchebag Tiesto is. Get used to it and keep dealing with them with tact.

Cheers for that! and does it effect the hearing of the atmosphere in the club? or does it just cancel out the bad frequencies..

Posted by Fl@k Monkey on Sep-09-2007 13:15:

Haven't really been to a club lately, From my experience last night it just tones the volume down for you so it can still be loud live but unlike everyone else you will be the one with the better hearing by the end of the night.
