If we took all of the world's wealth and redistributed it equally, within a generation (or so), would be right back where we started?

if the money was distributed without education then yes, we'd fall right back into the same routine. governments, societies and the people within those societies must change in order for the re-distribution to be worthwhile and sustainable.
give a million dollars to a person that doesn't know how to use it wisely then sure enough they will blow the cash and return to who they were before the money.

yes.
Many African countries have massive problems with corruption, so money will end up with a select few in those affected areas, so yes it will just return to normal.

..isn't it something like 20% of the world population owns over 90% of the world wealth?

I've heard it's 80% of wealth concentrated in 5% of population but couldn't locate a reliable source online.
Did find this though... the richest 2% of adults in the world own more than half of global household wealth. Refer here.Posted by Subey on Sep-09-2007 14:28:

If we pattern match human behaviour into its simplest analogy then we look like this:
Two people are standing next to a fire. One guy is pouring 1.0 units of water on the fire, the other is pouring .85 units of gasoline on the fire. This is the fundamental ratio in the tug of war between Utopia and Dystopia in the human race.
Now pass me that bag of marshmallows damnit!

i think that is speaking about countries. the top 20% percent of countries own most of the wealth, 80% of the countries are living in poverty.

Some people deserve more money than others simply because they are intellectually and/or physically capable of earning more. They live in places that offer the right opportunities to match their skill set. They also have the right political structure to exploit. Equal distribution of money to those who deserve and those who don't will create an imbalance to begin with. Ultimately, redistribution will occur such that the unworthy will end up with less or no money, and worthy will end up with more. But this type of redistribution will give worthy people in under developed states a chance to exploit the system and become rich. The competition will be more and in general and the world economics will change drastically.
