Los Angeles : Need advice on housing, attractions etc

Hey L.A.TAs

I'll be flying down to L.A this weekend for a 4 month internship in Santa Monica. Since its my first time coming down here, I thought it'd be best to ask you locals for advice regarding housing, nightlife, attractions, places to visit and any other tips. I heard L.A is a great place to check out architecture, and I hope to do a lot of that.

would any of you or someone you know have a room available to sublet? I'm still looking for housing and may be interested if you do. The firm I'm working for, is located at 2500 Broadway, Santa Monica, so it'd be nice to live close by.

thnx in advance,
Allan

hope to see some of you at Nocturnal

well to be helpful for nightlife just keep an eye on this forum, people mention the events quite often. in santa monica theres 3rd street promenade for shopping eating and hanging out but i duno how often you can do that w/ out getting sick of it. umm otherwise to admire the architecture i guess you can take a drive on the 101 thru downtown la and be stuck in traffic for ages with nothing else to look at than buildings and the graffiti along the freeway. haha i'd help if i could, but duno any specific places. if you feel like driving you can check out oldtown pasadena, orange county, or go to the beach. its right there too

4 months is the length of a UCLA quarter. september - december. try to find some ucla student subletting their place while they study abroad or are gone or something. its 5 miles or so to santa monica depending on where in santa monica, maybe like 30-45 drive though (but thats how it is in west LA). westwood is pricey, but santa monica is too. the whole area is pricey if you want a decent place. (i just found a new place in santa monica near highway 1 and i work in santa monica). downtown culver city is getting trendy, but be careful because neighborhoods change from really nice to really shitty from one block to the next.

If you're not going to have a car, then try and live really near the Big Blue Bus line that goes by your work.
Santa Monica is a bit bitchier about carpooling (incentives for carpooling), so if you're trying to do it on the cheap, that's the way to go.
The BBB isn't too bad as buses go (avoid the Metro Buses).
