LA or Miami ?

Hello,
I want to live and work in the USA but which city is the best for me between LA and Miami regarding people, work opportunities, weather, nightlife, ... ?
What's the pro and the cons of each ?
Thanks !
Manu

Miami.

LA is crowded

It depends what sort of work you are going to be doing. Miami is generally better in that you get a comparable climate at a lower cost of living.

Posted by hooj1 on Sep-14-2007 07:31:

sorry but the climate in miami sucks. so do the beaches...no surf.

Posted by Hypersky on Sep-14-2007 08:44:

I've lived in both and prefer Miami. But in the end, it depends on what your job is. If you work in Entertainment then obviously LA is the place.

Don't forget LA has a bigger electronic music scene (other than WMC of course) and Miami has the hotter, more humid weather. Also the constant threat of rain and hurricanes

And they allow European sun bathing in Miami.

I'm working in the IT sector and San francisco is too cold for me

Well being from Miami i will say that we have abigger house music scene than in LA.LA beats us for trance but thats because unless your PVD,or Tiesto no one goes and if they do its mostly men at trance parties so its an easy choice.
The thing that beats LA in my opinion is that we have terraces that stay open 24 hours and thats pretty sick.Space and Nocturnals Local Celebrity parties on Saturday and Sunday are bonkers. Those parties go until like 4-5 in the afternoon on a normal night. With the exception of when Morillo,Sander, and Sanchez come to Soace they take it to a whole other levelk of Marathon on the terrace. Really out of all the places ive been no one has anything that compares to the terraces we have in Downtown Miami.
I will make my full decision at the end of October when i go to see Prydz @Avalon and Craig Richards sublevel party.
I hear good things about LA,so we'll see what the hype is about.

Is the weather in Miami so unbearable in summer (May->oct) ?
I loved the LA weather but found it too cold at morning, evening and night. (I was there in April)

I mean it gets hot but it rains every afternoon for a little bit so it cools it down for nighttime so its not too bad. Then again im born and raised in Miami so i might be a little more immune to the heat than most.Besides there's lots of cool stuff to do when it's hot in SOBE.Really cool daytime parties during the Summer.

Oh and yes there is no surf in Miami.Although we have lot of choice spots to surf around Fl.When Hurricanes come, the waves pick up nicely even if we dont get hit by one.Although you cant compare LA to Florida for surf.LA beats the shit out of Miami for that.
Still on topic to say that we dont have badass beaches is rediculious our water farther down south is as crystal clear as glass and our beaches arent very over populated with people and we have some pretty hot Spanish chicas roaming the beahces topless in a few beaches in Miami,if thats you kind of thing. Its deffintly up my alley.

Re: LA or Miami ?

LA has better options year round. Better weather in my opinion and you can do more things overall. Surfing year round, snowboarding near by, etc. plus if you are an IT you have lots more opportunities.

LA is also closer to Vegas

fucking christ as a person who grew up in florida, anywhere in california is better just for the weather. the people in socal can and mostly do indeed suck (most TA's not included lol), but people in Miami are almost just as bad (to give you an idea, Miami is wideley accepted as the plastic surgery capital of the US, you know....NOT L.A. -- if you ever read LA is, that report is wrong, lol.).

At the same time, I do REALLY miss the thunderstorms in Florida. I love watching it lightning and thunder hardcore. Storms in Cali are like pansies compared to the ones in Florida...if it sprinkles here, peopel say it's pouring, lol

just wondering but why not SF or NY? never gone to Miami but I didnt care for LA

Posted by JSmooth619 on Sep-14-2007 23:45:

I have visited both cities, each has its pros and cons. If possible why no try to visit both cities for a couple days so you can get a feel for each one, and find what city "does it for you" nothing beats basing a decision off personal experience.

didn't know there were several of you who've lived in both miami and la I lived in Miami pretty much my whole life. I moved to LA just about 7 or 8 months ago. At first I was homesick and that made me hate LA even more so since there were many subtleties which bothered me. The weather is better in LA, though I hate how cold it is in the morning, then it's scorching in the daytime. Since you're posting here, i assume you do some partying. I think Miami wins it hands down. Even though I've attended several parties over here in LA, several things bite my ass. Mainly the 2am alcohol law. I guess I was just used to still being drunk early in the morning on the terrace. Better talent is brought over here in LA. But for some reason, partying in the sun is hands down, a big vice. Atleast for me. As for jobs, depends on what you're looking for. I think the economy is better in LA., but the cost of living goes hand in hand. I heard prices are going up in Miami though, anyone confirm?

I moved to L.A. from Miami (born and raised) about a year ago and have noticed the following:

L.A. is far more expensive than Miami. That said, there are a ton more opportunities of all kinds in L.A. This goes for EDM as well. Miami has WMC and Ultra (Bang has apparently dropped EDM this year): L.A. has Giant Village, Nocturnal, Monster Massive, EDC, Giant Maximus and I am sure I've forgotten a few more. Also, between Avalon, Circus and Vanguard, L.A. pulls in far better talent than Miami on a week in, week out basis.

So many events in Miami are ruined by all sorts of corrupt B.S. The terrace at Space is an amazing place for after-hours but there are thousands of condos going up within a block or two of Space and it's likely only a matter of time before the politicians kill the 24-hour parties once the condos have residents in them complaining about the noise (Miami politicians are notoriously inept and somewhat corrupt).

If you surf, California beaches rule. I don't so I prefer the 90-degree surf in Miami, plus the beaches are cleaner.

I'd call it a draw weather-wise: I like the heat and occasional thunderstorm but the hurricanes are a massive pain in the ass (putting up the shutters, evacuating, cleaning up, losing power for a week or more). It's nice never having to plan for rain in L.A. and wearing a long sleeve shirt every now and again.

What I like about Miami is that it is an absolutely crazy mix of people: Cubans, Haitians, Brazilians, European ... it's a weird, unpredictable place to live. Everyone's got a short fuse, which is pretty funny. And having Cuban coffee (rocket fuel) on every corner in South Beach kicks ass.

This is so true, you really have to be careful cause you might piss off the wrong person and next thing you know you have a gun in your face, saw this happen twice in a two week span, once in broad daylight

I personally prefer the West Coast!!

it's true that you might see several belligerent drivers and such, but me personally, never had any big problems. What about gang activity here in LA?? I haven't looked into that too much. You don't really see too much of that stuff over there in miami even though you have all those drugs.

good point, like I said, each city has its pros and cons.

i was born in miami, lived there until i was 6 but went back all the time to visit family. lived most of my life in atlanta so i'm not going to comment on which city is better to live in but i will say that every time i go to miami, i always have an amazing time!! and of course living here the last 5 years, well, i seem to have more and more fun every weekend. but that's me, i always try to find the fun

good luck with whatever city you choose

That's one great thing about LA. There is always something to do. Always a party to go to.

You also have to consider contacts. Do you know more people here or there?
