TAPS Idol - Launched!! - Limited spots remaining

hi gang after a lot of PMs and responses from the last thread we've decided to give this competition a go.

IMPORTANT:

this is a 6 week competition, if for ANY reason, you don't think you can compete all 6 weeks please don't bother signing up, you'll be wasting someone elses spot and thats not fair.

with that said here is how the competition is going to be structured:

6 weeks of competition:

week 1 - guitar hero - best use of guitar samples(provided) in any kind of prog house/prog trance bit. bpm range is acceptable, looking for melody, production quality and over all appeal. minimum length 1:30, maximum 3min

week 2 - 'clone it' - i love this one, pick one of your favorite trance/psy/whatever tracks and do your best to recreate it. your mp3 of your work must be side by side with the original(a clip for copyright sake) so we can compare and see who truly understands the eq, compression, synth programming of their favorite artists. midi's available at nonstop2k. 1minute - 3 min in length

week 3 - phat bassline - your turn to be vandalism/hook n' sling/sander van doorn for the week, we're looking for the dirtyest, dancefloor killer. production will be based on bassline programming, use of automation and compression/eq/driving techniques.

week 4 - vocal love - with the supplied acapella we want to see your most creative use of vocal processing techniques on top of any beat(breaks, ambient, dub step, house, trance, whatever). this competition will judge the processing on vocals mainly but will look at over all ability to fit these into a proper mix with creativity. minimum length is 1min, longest 3min.

week 5 - percussion - with only using the given samples for percs(1-shots) we want a strictly percussion track(with fx pieces if necessary but no melodies, basslines, pads, etc). voting should be based on, catchyness, creativness of percs, over all swing and groove.

week 6 - originals, originals, originals. - if you've made it this far
taking direction from others you've obviously proved your worth, not only to yourself but to the rest of the field as well. now its time for you to do what you want, we want 4-9min full length tracks in here to showcase your talent.

+1

good luck with it . I'm already a fan of the show

Posted by soundrush on Sep-15-2007 21:25:

this seems to be pretty time demanding.
is it possible to subscribe in particular?

Posted by Pompous SmugFag on Sep-15-2007 22:23:

Week 2 Competition kinda turns me off from joining.. I'll definatly be following it though.

if you guys think cutting it down(time wise) will get more interets i'm down, otherwise might have to make this known on a few other forums to get enough people

do you mean the duration of the contest or the duration of the weekly entries?

i think there are plenty of people on this sub-forum that are regulars so we SHOULD, i use that word loosely, be able to get the required amount of contestants

p.s. how many people do you need before we start the contest? and will people with the least votes get voted out every week?

*waits for rules to be posted* lol

Sounds like a lot of fun, but also a lot of commitment. Some of the rules seem a little tight though...

it was either make very specific rules or leave it entirely open. if we left it too open we were just afraid genre would supercede all voting instead of the production elements of the contest (ie we do the guitar hero comp, 3 house tracks 9 trance... most people on this board are into trance... trance wins... a subconscious thing i'm sure but still something to consider)

I don't understand week 2. Must i recreate a song??? totally? with perc, bassdrum etc? or just a synthline? Even if it's the synth..Hurray for Reason users with a 2osc Subtracting synth..

As above poster, this idea is nice, but week 2 makes me say no.

Yea, I'm not sure of your reasons but I dont like the obsession with trying to copy old sounds, its all about being new and original.

Will still sign up though!

the week 2 competition is about skills and not inovation. i think it's a much better contest to rate in a fair way than rating inovation. and even with reason you can recreate everything...

you have 5 other weeks to prove your originality but what we're looking for here, is your ability to understand what makes the great... well great.

we're leaving this open to you, but surely you can understand why this is included --

why are people so turned off by week 2! OMG week 2 will be my favorite.. it will prove if you can understand why shit sounds the way it does

not really.. will just prove that you were able to find similar sounding drum samples and make similar patches with the gear you have available lol.

whatever it'll be fun to listen too though. just makes me not want to compete personally.

well most trance songs are not about drum samples but synths & synth programming.. and even then the mix has to be similar in terms of EQ and shit.. its not just about a treasure hunt for similar sounds..

My Fav to. Track choice will play a big part.

I assume if we choose a track with vocals we wont be penalized for not including them?

Posted by derail on Sep-19-2007 14:53:

Vocal tracks are fine by me. There's generally enough else going on that it's enough of a challenge to recreate.

It'll be interesting to see what tracks get picked for that challenge. Trying to find a track which is fairly straightforward to recreate, but still sounds like it was challenging...I'll have to start thinking, trying out some options, in case I get to round 2.

Posted by System101 on Sep-19-2007 20:17:

anthony.. whats going on with the rules of the contest?

Posted by derail on Sep-19-2007 23:02:

Rules will be up later today (or just "pretty soon", depending what time zones we're all in), as well as the week 1 challenge!

I guess I can see that - still, I think it would have made a lot of sense to make the challenges genre based, i.e. Progressive Trance Week, Anthem Week, Tech-Trance Week etc.. But that's just me.
