reactions

How have people reacted when they find out what kind of music you listen to? Where I live, (Ohio) most people that I know listen to nothing but rap. So, I'll have my cd player and they'll ask what I'm listening to. I'll usually say something like "techno" (I want to make it easy. I don't want to go through the whole explanation of the difference between techno and trance.) The general response is

"What, is that a group or a song"
"No, it's a type of music."
"Huh?"
"You know, electronic music."
"Electric Guitar?"
At this point I'm shocked that so many people don't even know that there is such a thing as music made with electronic equipment. I usually just have them listen to it by this time and get a neutral reaction. They don't hate it but they don't like it either. What reactions have you received?

I don't generally play trance or techno for people unless I know beforehand that they like it.

People don't ask questions if I just tell them that I listen to "electronic music."

The general response has been "okay".

It's not that big of a deal around here.

"Oh, Techno? COOL! Have you heard of that Cascada song?"

*Me* Puts in Derrick May @ I Love Techno mix

"WTF is that shit? Put Sandstorm on!"

or

"Techno?!? What are you, retarded? You should listen to good music like 50 Cent and Good Charlotte instead"

or

"OMG are you like taking X or something? Is that the kind of music that people wear pacifiers and get fucked up in warehouses?"

These reactions are why I call my music "Dance" music. Its easy to understand without any connotations, and if they ask for details than I'll say House or whatever.

Also, if you get in my car, prepare to hear my "you have to bear my music in order to ride" disclaimer

lol rap is electronic that's pretty fail.

If they don't know what techno is either... what's bad about saying trance?

Theres some good breaks tracks that have a bit of rapping in them. Try that on them.

Yep, hear that all the fucken time.

When people ask me about EDM I listen to I just say techno, because if I say trance theyre like, whats trance? how is that different from techno?

i told someone i like techno the other week and they said
'do u like scooter'
me: 'no'
'why not they are techno arent they?'
me: 'no there not'
'oh shit i would of never guessed i never knew that'

"YOU like Type O Negative?"
"YOU like Fear Factory??"
"Really? The POLICE??"
"Neil YOUNG?? No way!!"
"Wu-Tang, eh? Yeah, they're dope, but never would have expected you to be into them."

Folks pretty much know I'm an electronic whore, especially of stuff they aren't that familiar with. Maybe it's the way I walk?

It's when I tell them I'm into music they DIDN'T expect that I get The Reaction.

I generally just say I listen to dance music. Usually works fine, other than the surprise people get when they find out I don't listen to metal/alt rock (skinny white arts student, can't hold it against them when it's usually a true stereotype).

If I know they have a knowledge of edm beyond commercial stuff, I might be a little more specific and say 'trance, hard dance, hardcore'

I usually don't mention any EDM, or if I do, I mention it in passing. Something like:

"I like jazz, classical, some electronic, a lot of stuff really."

covers a lot of bases, and usually avoids the Cascada, Sandstorm, and ecstasy comments.

hehe.

i usually say i listen to alot of trance, psychedelic, sum drum n base and breaks. i sorta dont have any problem with it.

the only thing that annoys me most of the time that they think im a druggie or something or drugged up still from the weekend.. lol.

if i cant be bothered for a reaction or conversation, id just say electro.

I've only had the fucking stupid reaction once. A girl asked me what music I liked and I said "dance music", so she played the Bob Sinclar cover of Everybody Dance Now and said "Like that?" I laughed and shook my head, leaving her baffled.

However, because I live in a country where clubbing is part of the general youth culture, most people act normally: "I hate that stuff/I love that stuff/Some of it's alright". Even the die-hard guitar crowd can usually empathise with The Prodigy and increasingly Pendulum, who seem to be loved by everyone from chavs through to NME kids.

Yeah Pendulum seem to be doing really well lately. Underground enough for the DNB kiddies and clubbers, but sounds enough like metal or rock for the people from those respective genres to listen to.

I say electronica mostly.
Worst thing is ppl who don't understand how anyone who listens to this "techno" can enjoy bands like Led Zeppelin etc. I've gotten the "blasphemy" reaction on that a few times.

i usually tell people that i listen to electronic music and this is their reaction:, which is why i don't even bother telling anyone anymore.
