Ayumi Hamasaki, a Japanese pop singer who has been increasingly popular in Europe due to many European artists remixing her songs.

Ayumi HAMASAKI is the japanese top pop singer of the moment. She's released 4 original albums and a lot of maxi singles during the last 4 years, and she's broken most of the selling records. She wins a lot of awards every year, and has an enormous influence on the japanese youth, on fashion...
Each of her singles is actually released as a maxi single, which contains the original track, the instrumental one, and 8/10 various remixes (house, techno, trance) made by various japanese, american or european DJs. She also releases techno/trance remixes compilations and acoustic orchestra versions of her songs. That's why she has so much success: everybody can find something he likes in her music.
Excepted Jpop fans, Ayu has started being known in Europe with the remix of her song Whatever by Ferry Corsten in 2000, but above all wit her trance remixes compilation Ayu-Trance, which contains only remixes by the greatest european trance DJs: Ferry Corsten, Svenson & Gielen, Dumonde, Above & Beyond, Armin, Push... This CD has a very good reputation for Trance lovers, and since this moment each of her releases is observed, everybody looking for a new remix by a famous DJ.

That brings us to the next question- why are remixers and producers all rushing in to rework Ayumi's tracks? Are we drifting towards mainstream pop and cheese?

She takes care of every part of her career, all alone. Ayu and Britney's music is not the same, their public is note the same, their voice is not the same, the way they do their job is not the same. she's far from being a japanese britney...she sings many diff styles of music. i'd compare her more to Madonna.
She sings pop. And my couutry has had enough of pop to have trance associated with pop! Argh!

ok, ok, true. she's not britney, but regardless britney or madonna its still pop music. and most people around here think pop music = cheese. she is teeny bopper music in japan. there's no denying that. she is a trend setter in mainstream teenybopper culture, just like how pop icons like britney and nsync are in western culture here.
and imho, she ain't that hot, in fact i think she looks scary with all that friggin makeup caked on her face... try sung hi lee... now you're talkin' 
only 'remix' i like is song for x, remixed by ferry...
only song i listen to really is 'to be (acoustic version)' which isn't a trance remix, cuz imho, her vocals don't really mix well with trance

The acoustic orchestra versions of her songs are really good, that's true. My favourites are Who..., Fly High, Key and Duty, just try!
The comparison with Madonna is more justified, and she is a Madonna fan. She evens sometimes wears T-shirts with Madonna's face during her TV appearances.
I never said Ayu is hot, don't think she has a so beautiful body, that's true, but that's not what we're asking her... I love her eyes, but this is not the problem... Really can't bear Sung Hi Lee, she's like all those bitches you always see on TV, just able to make lonely guys feel a little bit more better when they are alone in their bed... If you are not one of those guys who only love those bitches, just look at Namie AMURO, she's really cute and nothing vulgar by her...:

Pop is going dance-y. It cannot be denied, dance music makes money. However, Ayu is an exception as renowned producers do PROPER remixes of her songs. I can guarantee that the remixers WERE NOT asked to do the remixes, but saw potential in her musci and gave it a go. To associate Pop with Trance is quite bad, but it is becoming dance orientated.
