A 10 year old murderer (she cut the throat of another student because of an online flame war) became a pop icon in Japan.
Her identity was withheld by police, but a photo circulated on the 4chan of japan with her wearing a Nevada sweater.
She became known as Nevada-Tan and her character is an online pop icon (kind of like Star Wars Kid or Alex Chiu, etc)

Inevitably, this spilled over into 4chan and from there to other English language imageboards, introducing Nevada-tan to the English speaking world.

Nevada Tan is the name of a German Nu Metal band which formed in 2007 and has since released a very succesful debut record in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Australian band Love Outside Andromeda wrote a song about the incident, entitled Boxcutter, Baby.
